Ancillary services to the power grids are in demand due to a rapid growth of renewable energy in recent years. Demand-side flexible loads have the potential to provide reliable and affordable operational reserve services to the grid. However, this must be achieved without compromising the resources' delivery of quality service to the end users. In this paper, we present demand flexibility estimator and ramping service controls for multi-zone commercial building's air distribution system and chiller plant. The building flexibility is represented by a simple virtual battery model and a model-based optimization algorithm is used to estimate the parameters of the virtual battery in a receding horizon manner. The proposed ramping controller varies the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems' power consumption so that the deviation from its baseline power profile tracks the grid reference signal while maintaining comfortable indoor climate. This is achieved by modifying the zones temperature set-points within a given comfort bounds and adjusting the temperature set-point of the chilled water. The controller's performance is demonstrated with a high-fidelity simulation model representing a medium sized office building to meet the ARPA-E NODES project targets for response time, ramp time, reserve magnitude, variability tolerance and duration of service. Overall, the results validate the capability of buildings to provide high quality grid ramping reserves with minimal indoor comfort impact.

Light weight parallel manipulators are most desirable for aerospace, medical applications etc., where flexibility, low inertia, simplicity in operation, low stowed volume are important parameters. This paper presents the design and simulation of a flexible parallel manipulator with central elastic column that is made of superelastic nitinol. The actuators are shape memory SMA wires of 300 mu m diameter. Unlike conventional rigid link parallel manipulators, the proposed manipulator does not have any joints, which is the major advantage. The proposed manipulator is investigated for its degree of freedom with virtual rigid segment concept and its large deflection is analyzed based on elastica approach. Its control aspect is briefly described and numerical simulation results are presented.

This paper addresses the issues on implementation of an isotropic air-link technology for future 4G wireless. One straightforward way is to use open-loop and closed-loop uplink synchronization (ULS) control techniques to turn asynchronous uplink back to synchronous operation mode. The use of ULS control can greatly enhance bilateral data transmission throughput in both uplink and downlink channels of a mobile cellular as a direct result from improved transmission imparity between them. This is especially important for some applications where the traffic in the both links should be made equally high, such as video conferencing. This paper will also introduce a modeling method to analyze performance of ULS control in a mobile cellular system. It should be noted that, although this paper's study is carried out under the TD-SCDMA framework, the method can be equally applicable to any TDD-based 3G and 4C wireless systems that choose ULS control as the means to achieve isotropic air-link transmission. A numerical analysis based on propagation delay estimation will be used to derive probability of successful ULS control under consideration of the impact of different channel environments, such as reflection coefficients, propagation patterns, attenuation gradient and cell size, etc.

Cloud Computing (CC) was introduced recently as a new paradigm to host and deliver Information technology Services. Despite its advantages and maturity, security and privacy issues in CC remain an open challenge. Usually, cloud-based systems use login and password combination, PINs, smart cards, or unimodal biometrics for users authentication;Multimodal biometrics can be considered as an alternative solution and additional factor to increase CC authentication security level. First, the paper deals with the authentication security in CC and proposes a new approach to implement a multimodal biometric systems for authentication and identity management using user's physiological and/or behavioral traits. Second, combining the advantages of multi-factor and multimodal biometric techniques we develop a hybrid scheme called Multi-factor Authentication based on Multimodal Biometrics (MFA-MB) in order to authenticate and allow access for cloud consumers. This paper presents a design method of a solidstate transformer (SST) for medium-voltage direct current (MVDC) Application. The traditional low frequency transformer requires a huge volume and weight to adopt for high-power and medium-voltage application. With growth of the power electronics technology, the solid-state switch based DC transformer became attractive candidate for DC distribution field. In this paper, the classification of SST topologies are introduced and a novel SST architecture is presented which is composed of modular converters. The various simulation results verify the effectiveness of the proposed SST design and its control strategy.
