The new scanning microprobe has been in operation for two years. Real-time data acquisition takes place on a front-end system. The measured data is transported via Ethernet to a workstation for on-line monitoring, analysis and storage. Hardware for control of the scan magnet and the quadrupoles and a multichannel analyzer have been developed. Data acquisition software for on-line monitoring and simultaneous display of multiple spectra with user selectable parameters has been written. The user interface is based on the X11-Window system. A relational database gives the user a flexible way to specify all parameters for the experiment. A faster datalink and a faster workstation will be realized this year.

A novel thyristor-controlled shunt VAR compensator is described. The scheme utilizes a six-pulse natural commutated dual-converter scheme for VAR control operation. The effect of dc offset voltage control on VAR drawn by the converter has been investigated. The following advantages are associated with this technique: there is low-current harmonic injection in the ac source;the converter does not draw active power from the ac source at any alpha;and there is full utilization of the converter VAR handling capability, as the performance is not affected by the commutating inductance. A theoretical and experimental investigation of fundamental and harmonic frequency characteristics of the source current is presented.

In this paper a Dual Band Star fractal antenna with slot is proposed for wireless applications, with a semi-elliptical ground plane. The proposed antenna is designed to operate at two different bands having bandwidth 1GHz and 1.2 GHz at resonant frequencies 2.8 GHz and 5.7 GHz respectively for wireless applications with good return loss and radiation pattern characteristics, in the frequency band. The proposed antenna is fed by a 50 Omega microstrip line and fabricated on a low-cost FR4 substrate having dimensions 33.5(L) x 28.5(W) x 1.6(h) mm(3) with epsilon(r)=4.4 and tan delta=0.025. The antenna shows acceptable gain with nearly omni-directional radiation patterns in the frequency band for wireless applications as Wi-MAX and WLAN.
