Basic controllers which apply to process control are reviewed. Common types of controllers discussed are two-position, proportional, integral, derivative, proportional plus integral, proportional plus derivative and proportional plus integral plus derivative. The author presents a simple method for adjusting the controller when it is installed on a system, making use of the on-line manual-tuning procedure. Having shown that the controller settings can be obtained in the field, it will be possible for the engineer/operator to tune the controller for certain applications and thus determine the controller parameters even before the process reaction curve is built.

Air traffic in Europe is expected to double by 2025 according to the last forecast of Eurocontrol, with an average growth of 2.7%-3.7% per year. In this context, an integrated aircraft communication system is of paramount importance to improve the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of the air transportation system. The SANDRA ("Seamless Aeronautical Networking Through Integration of Data Links, Radios and Antennas") project designed, implemented and validated an integrated aeronautical communications system for this purpose. This system has now been put to the test in in-flight trials using the DLR Airbus A-320 ATRA Advanced technology Research Aircraft. This paper presents results of these trials gained from the measurement of selected sample-applications. These sample applications were modeled after real-world aeronautical communication applications, but specifically adapted to allow network performance measurements.

This paper presents a nonlinear- controller design approach for ultracapacitor-based energy storage systems (UCESSs) for supplying active and reactive power in grid-connected power system applications. The controller is designed based on the dynamical model of UCESSs where the model is developed from the electrical equivalent circuit of the ultracapacitor (UC) connected to the grid through a voltage source converter (VSC). The nonlinear controller is designed based on the partial feedback linearization with an aim of controlling active and reactive power injected into the grid through the regulation of the respective currents. The stability analysis of the internal dynamics of UCESSs is also investigated in this paper as the controller cannot be implemented if these internal dynamics are unstable. The performance of the proposed controller is evaluated on a grid connected UC system and the simulation results show the superior performance of the proposed controller as compared to a finely-tuned PI controller.

This technology is a complete system with the ability to also manage multiple algorithms and the flexibility to provide encryption for "Data-at-Rest" and "Data-inTransit". Under US Navy contracts, prototypes of the technology that have been demonstrated to US Navy, Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command, Advanced technology Office include: a. Encryption of objects, "Data-at-Rest" for storage and retrieval, b. Encryption off-mail and c. Encryption of imagery files such that;associated images and annotations within the file are encrypted at different levels of access. Current US Navy contracts are directed towards prototyping demonstrations for. 1. A secure device driver (ensuring that all data sent or saved is encrypted), 2. A CKM crypto monitor (to determine compliance with policy), and 3. The application of CKM to control the use of electronically programmable devices (such as radios, weapon systems or any system with an electronically programmable control panel). 4. The use of CKM to provide privacy to the smart card being prototyped for the US Navy SmartBase program. Outside the US Navy, there has been an audio application of CKM on a C'S Government contract and CKM technology has been approved as an ANSI Standard for Finance and Banking applications The ANSI Standard Number is X9.69. Although August 1997 DoD Policy is to establish a DoD Public Key Infrastructure (PKI), there are indications that other technologies that can incorporate Public/Private Key (PK) functions could become acceptable to DoD. This, in part justifies the efforts to explore other than PK technologies within DoD and bolsters the efforts to support COTS derived technologies for GOTS applications. In this paper an adaptive control speed for an induction motor drive is presented. The proposed adaptive scheme uses a Mamdani Fuzzy Logic controller (MFLC). The parameters of the membership output function characterizing the linguistic terms in the fuzzy if-Then rules change according the adaptation. The MFLC approximates and adaptively cancels an unknown plant non-linearity. The adaptive law is developed for the purpose of tracking a reference speed in a motion system. Based on the Lyapunov theory, the stability of the whole system and the convergence of the tracking error are also discussed. The tracking error is guaranteed to be uniformly stable and ultimately bounded with the aid of an additional supervisory term. Computer simulations show that the effect on the error of both the fuzzy approximation and the external disturbances can be attenuated by the proposed controller. Moreover, experimental results are presented to verify the effectiveness of the method.

The Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) is one of the most widely used generators for wind energy applications and more of 50% of the installed Wind Energy Conversion Systems (WECS) are using this sort of variable speed technology. However, the machine requires brushes for the operation which increases the maintenance work. To overcome this drawback a Brushless Double Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG), composed of two cascaded doubly-fed machines with the rotor windings interconnected, could be used. In this work, the control of a BDFIG is presented using a matrix converter (MC). Matrix converters may be seen as suitable converter choice for this application instead of the standard back-to-back PWM voltage source converter topology. Results from an experimental rig are presented for operation of the BDFIG at variable speed with the machine driven by a commercial AC drive as a prime mover.
