Volumetric Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks remain a persistent threat to network infrastructures. The increasing number of devices connected to the Internet, e.g., through the Internet of Things, and growing data rates make volumetric DDoS attacks easier to execute at a large scale, resulting in a high impact on the target. Drill-down DDoS Destination Detection aggregates ingress traffic in two dimensions, the source and destination IP address space, represented as a fixed-state image. A Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) identifies the attack's target subnet using multi-class classification. Iteratively monitoring only the subnet detected by the CNN at a finer granularity leads to increasingly accurate results until the exact destination IP address is determined. The destination drill-down is evaluated on synthetic and authentic traffic, detecting an attack with 2.5% of the background traffic within 275 milliseconds.

Analyzing network traffic and identifying unique IoT devices is important to secure and safeguard the IoT network. Machine Learning models have been leveraged to train classifiers to identify network devices based on the network packets. However, past approaches have often involved either MAC address, IP address, or both when identifying IoT devices in a network. These approaches do not consider the challenge of IP and MAC spoofing when developing their classifier models. This research introduces GoNP, a graph-based approach for extracting network traffic patterns and matching them to a corresponding IoT device. In contrast to previous approaches, our approach does not consider IP and MAC addresses during device identification as these can be easily spoofed. We have designed and developed a graph-based device identification model that achieves IoT device identification accuracy of upto 100%. We have evaluated our approach against past approaches that leveraged machine learning classifiers for device identification, and our model performed consistently better when the IP and MAC addresses of network devices are spoofed.

Satellite networks are crucial for future 6G communications, offering global coverage. However, traditional Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) struggles with poor stability in dynamic satellite networks. In contrast, QUIC is capable of providing stability in such environments thanks to features like seamless connection migration. Nevertheless, the loss detection and recovery strategy of QUIC needs improvement in satellite networks with relatively high transmission errors. To address this, we propose Polar-QUIC, an adaptive packet-level polar coding-assisted QUIC scheme. By leveraging the robust error correction capabilities of polar codes, we design a packet-level encoder/decoder, loss detection tuning module, and adaptive redundancy module that combines packet loss rate and congestion window size. Experimental results demonstrate that Polar-QUIC effectively reduces the average Download Completion Time (DCT) of QUIC in satellite networks. Specifically, Polar-QUIC minimizes the average DCT by up to 35.8% and 74.5%, respectively, compared to general forward error correction schemes such as Reed-Solomon Codes and Random Linear Codes.

Wireless Mesh networks (WMNs) promise to offer robust, reliable, and economically scalable communication, surpassing traditional wired and wireless network infrastructures across diverse applications. Currently, most of the active research in this field often relies on simulations for validating new theories, due to cost constraints associated with physical setups. However, simulation software typically features simplified hardware abstractions that limit extensive configurability and fail to mirror real-world performance accurately. This paper addresses the need for a robust WMN testbed capable of overcoming these challenges. Our framework complements simulation results by facilitating practical, real-world experiments. Specifically, we present a versatile testbed framework supporting configurations such as Multi-Radio Multi-Channel, Multi-Radio Single-Channel, and Single-Radio Single-Channel mesh interfaces. Leveraging Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) computing devices, our setup emphasizes reproducibility and scalability. Key features include automation of network setup to ensure reproducibility, telemetry collection and storage for network performance analysis, and a web-based dashboard for visualizing network topology and key performance metrics. This demonstration aims to reduce the time and effort required to establish a WMN testbed, thereby benefiting the scientific community at large.

Reproducible wireless experiments pose a particular challenge due to their susceptibility to interference and changing channel conditions. Unlike most wired networks, they do not have dedicated connections or well-shared frequencies. This makes broadcast media such as wireless networks a challenge for reproducible experiments that are comparable to real-world scenarios. There are many attempts to approach these difficulties, either by simulation, emulation, or dedicated testbeds. All of them have certain strengths in specific applications, but also certain weaknesses - with respect to accuracy, flexibility, and cost. We therefore propose a combination of a physical link under a controlled environment, together with virtual wireless interfaces (VIFs) used to emulate arbitrary topologies. This allows us to make use of the real-world behavior of hardware with respect to timings such as media access while offering the flexibility of an emulated environment. By using containers for individual emulated nodes that use VIFs we can setup such topologies on a single host. In addition, measurement tools and applications can be run natively within this setup.

Traffic classification plays an indispensable role in computer networks and the Internet of Things. As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, a diverse array of encrypted protocols (e.g., HTTPS, GQUIC, and TLS) is becoming increasingly prevalent. Alongside this, the challenge of encrypted traffic classification has garnered renewed attention, fostered by the increasing adoption of Deep Learning (DL) methodologies. Nonetheless, the fast-paced release of new encrypted protocols necessitates frequent retraining of DL models on reformed datasets encompassing encrypted traffic from both known and unknown applications. This requirement can lead to the issues of catastrophic forgetting, particularly when classifying unknown applications. To address this shortcoming, we propose a novel two-stage Incremental Learning (IL) paradigm based on flow-exemplar selection strategy and model pruning, CoSP, to enable continuous model evolution with unknown applications. Extensive experiments on encrypted traffic datasets in a Software-defined networking environment illustrate that our method outperforms other IL approaches, achieving 1.07% and 0.94% improvements in last accuracy and forgetting, respectively.

The Science Demilitarized Zone (Science DMZ) is a network environment optimized for scientific applications. he Science DMZ model provides a reference set of network design patterns, tuned hosts and protocol stacks dedicated to large data transfers and streamlined security postures that significantly improve data transfer performance, accelerating scientific collaboration and discovery. Over the past decade, many universities and organizations have adopted this model for their research computing. Despite becoming increasingly popular, there is a lack of quantitative studies comparing such a specialized network to conventional production networks regarding network characteristics and data transfer performance. But does a Science DMZ exhibit significantly different behavior than a general-purpose campus network? Does it improve application performance compared a to general-purpose network? Through a two-year-long quantitative network measurement study, we find that a Science DMZ exhibits lower latency, higher throughput, and lower jitter behaviors. We also see several non-intuitive results. For example, a DMZ may take a longer route to external destinations and experience higher latency than the campus network. While the DMZ model benefits researchers, the benefits are not automatic, careful network tuning based on specific use cases is required to realize the full potential of Science DMZs.

Mesh networks enables quick on-demand infrastructure creation and help achieve vital last-mile connectivity. Wi-Fi integration can further enhance the potential and compatibility for the pervasive connectivity requirements in next-generation applications. Despite advancements, Wi-Fi standards still need efforts to meet long-range requirements. Accordingly, this paper proposes a customized handheld platform named WiLong for constructing long-range Wi-Fi Mesh networks in the unlicensed higher bands, 2.4 and 5 GHz. The proposed platform can offer versatile radio profiles by leveraging commercially available hardware and open-source software components, augmented with the addition of ieee 802.11s mesh link and the B.A.T.M.A.N. advanced routing protocol. Experimental evaluations of the said platform have been conducted across various practical environments, including indoor/outdoor spaces, urban & open bay areas, multi-floor basement car parking, and dense mesh deployments. The experimental results underscore the effectiveness of the WiLong platform in improving long-range Wi-Fi performance while emphasizing the significance of multi-hop networking in demanding ground-to-ground scenarios. These findings highlight the platform's robustness and versatility. In a selected urban route scenario, the WiLong platform achieved 80% voice and 63% video call bandwidth. Additionally, when configured with 2.4 GHz, the platform reached two floors below in a multi-floor basement car parking.

Applications of the Internet of Things (IoT), particularly within Industrial IoT, impose stricter reliability and efficiency requirements on low-power wireless technologies. This has driven the creation of new medium access protocols, such as Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH). Recently, autonomous schedulers, which manage wireless links without node negotiation, are gaining popularity due to their lightweight and reliable operation. However, challenges arise with node mobility and dynamic traffic, as current schedulers use a static allocation method. To overcome this gap, we propose Forte, a hybrid scheduler that combines autonomous scheduling for basic connectivity with a centralized on-demand scheduler that allocates extra timeslots and frequency channels so that nodes adapt to the dynamic requirements. The centralized module formulates a Lyapunov optimization to guarantee queue stability while minimizing negotiation overhead and nodes' duty-cycles. Forte outperforms the state-of-the-art by reducing packet end-to-end delay and increasing packet delivery ratio, all with minimal duty-cycle increase.

We present ToFMD, a system that can passively detect the movement of an indoor device-free user by relying on the absorptions and reflections of WiFi signals off his body. Our system is of practical use as it is able to reuse existing deployed commodity 802.11 infrastructure networks. It is based on the observation that the movement of an user is altering the multipath characteristics of the wireless channel which leads to changes in the measured time-of-flight (ToF) between adjacent WiFi access points. The system can detect moving people at different places in the room, it is not necessary that the user blocks the line-of-sight (LOS) path. In contrast to other approaches, our system works with inexpensive single antenna WiFi systems without access to low-level parameters like channel state information (CSI). Instead the ToF between any pair of access points is estimated using the fine time measurement (FTM) protocol, which is standardized within ieee 802.11. The movement is detected with the help of a one class support vector machine. As proof of concept, we implemented our system with ultra-low cost ESP32 microcontrollers. The evaluation shows that our solution outperforms traditional approaches using RSSI except for the scenario with user motion in adjacent rooms. If our system is installed in the same room as the user, it is able to detect its movement with an accuracy of at least 95 %.
