A risk-based expertsystem development methodology has been developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center to provide guidance to project managers and technical personnel and to serve as a standard for developing expertsystems. Concerns expressed by managers of expertsystem development projects are discussed. A description is given of the expertsystem life cycle and the risk-based expertsystem development methodology. Features of this methodology that address specific managerial concerns are reviewed.< >

Based on the development of PRXDM, an expertsystem for the fault diagnosis of the PRX/A electronic telephone exchange, a development life-cycle for expertsystem development is proposed. Seven phases are identified: domain definition, general design, detailed design, prototype development, integration, field testing, and operation. Provision is made for the extensive iteration and incrementation that is an essential part of all expertsystem development. A framework for testing. verifying, and validating expertsystems is presented, and relevant metrics that could be collected in each phase of development are suggested.< >

expertsystems (ESs) have associated risks that managers need to know as they consider new projects. The research reported is aimed at establishing a quantitative approach to assisting managers in identifying these risks. Results of empirical studies and new automated tools are discussed. The risks included: developing an application that fails to represent the expert's knowledge; failure to produce a usable system; upsetting people and groups within the organization who may feel threatened by the planned ES application; and exposing themselves or the organization to legal liability claims resulting from a malfunction of an ES application.< >

An expertsystem for the sintering process in an iron and steel company in Egypt is under development. The objective of this work is to introduce the prototype implementation project of this system. The authors focus on the nature of the sintering knowledge, the proposed knowledge structuring, and the knowledge representation formalism. They also discuss the various prototype levels of implementation and illustrate the practical development of the structural and diagnosis levels of the expertsystem prototype.< >

An examination is made of the desirability of embedding a rule-based expertsystem shell entirely within a relational database management system (DBMS). It is argued that embedding a shell can have significant advantages beyond improved access to database tables. The advantages and disadvantages of the system are discussed.< >

The author points out an opportunity for using first-generation expertsystemprograms to construct systems that can solve large-scale problems in a cooperative manner. He describes the requirements for expertsystemprograms to support integration into such systems and proposes the application of the communication-free cooperating agents theory (M.R. Genesereth et al., 1986) as a model for these systems. A minimal modification approach that uses an integration agent is discussed, and the feasibility of the proposal is assessed. An illustrative example from the design domain is included.< >

A discussion is presented of various issues regarding knowledge acquisition from multiple experts as well as methods for improving the process. Of special interest is the computerized support to the process and the implementation of the blackboard approach. The need and benefits of using multiple experts, the difficulties involved, and the availability of methods and tools in various stages of knowledge acquisition and the blackboard technology are discussed.< >

The model and methodology presented should prove useful in assessing whether an expertsystem is ready for deployment. The criteria provided by this model are important factors in considering proper expertsystem institutionalization. These factors should be considered when planning the expertsystem's development. For example, the skills of the person or group performing the maintenance of the expertsystem may affect the selection and ease of use of the expertsystem shell, if applicable. Additionally, if a shell is used, distribution issues of the expertsystem should be considered up front in terms of the costs of run-time licenses and other related considerations.< >

The details of a pedagogical expert training system which interfaces with such external programs as a database program, a worksheet program, and an ASCII file are described. A modular knowledge base has been developed and implemented in support of this study. The knowledge base consists of two separate components, the database and the rule base. The database is external to the main system, while the rule base resides in the main system as the 'controller' of the operation. The modularized knowledge base offers the user easy and quick maintenance of facts and rules.< >
