The uncertainty management system (UMS) shell and its management of uncertainty are described. UMS is an expertsystem building tool dedicated to real-time embedded applications. This system allows the user to specify knowledge using a set of linguistic approximations, without being conscious of data-processing internally performed. Supported by a development of the axioms of probability, an interval-based framework for managing uncertainty is presented. As generally admitted, an interval number is used to capture features of fuzziness and incompleteness. However, a new parameter, called the degree of dependency, is shown to be naturally induced by M.J. Frank's (1979) family of triangular norms.< >

A report is presented of the design, development, and deployment of ANSWERS, a knowledge-base system for decision support for auditors. The system is used in audit planning to identify high-risk areas, so that audit effort can be properly focused and so that the audit client can be advised of observed weaknesses in procedures and controls.< >

The difficulty in production fielding of successful expertsystem prototypes is discussed. The problem is presented in terms of a microeconomic perspective in which costs are identified as level of effort rather than actual dollar amounts. A discussion is also presented of three worksheets that cover the areas of functional integration, technical integration, and stakeholder analysis.< >

There is a need for rigorous system-development methods that can effectively support the analysis and design of systems with embedded, heterogeneous subsystems. The use of box structure methods and principles for this purpose is proposed. The use of box structure methods is illustrated with a case study on the ENEX equine nutrition expertsystem.< >

The capital budgeting effects and cost justification of a high-technology innovation (expertsystem technology) are discussed from a managerial perspective. Budgeting strategies are reviewed as they relate to funding and support for high-technology innovations. The Defense Finance and Accounting Service-Cleveland Center (DFAS-CL) expertsystem Program is reviewed from the points of view of average rate of return, payback, internal rate of return (IRR), modified internal rate of return (MIRR), accounting rate of return (ARR) and net present value (NPV) using the recently developed expertsystem 'COSTER'.< >

ASSESS was developed to evaluate and select the best application that requires an expertsystem component. ASSESS, an expertsystem itself, works on many levels (company, department, and application), each across many disciplines (business, organizational, and technical). Intelligently querying a user during a consultation allows many alternative potential application choices to be compared. The results are quantified, and the final recommendations are presented and interpreted along with their justifications. ASSESS provides the application selection expertise required for a systematic and consistent application assessment study.< >

The implementation issues surrounding uncertainty management are examined in order to aid in the design and development of an acoustic signal interpretation expertsystem. A brief introduction and overview of the current schemes available for representation of uncertainty in knowledge-based systems are presented. The results of a survey of current efforts in acoustic signal interpretation, with special attention directed toward the methods of uncertainty handling, are also presented. Issues relevant to the selection of uncertainty management schemes and assessing the impact on expertsystem design and development are discussed.< >

Traditional software engineering is crucial to the successful development of a large expertsystem. In this respect, large expertsystems are shown to have many similarities with other large software systems. The advanced computing concepts, rapid prototyping approach, and general research and development aspects of expertsystems have sometimes led to the neglect of fundamental principles of software engineering. These principles are creating and maintaining interfaces between program modules, the use of specification languages, automatic code generation, long-term maintenance, and the use of commercial products. A large-scale expertsystem currently in advanced development is used as an example.< >

Combining object and rule processing in knowledge-based systems provides a firm foundation for addressing more complex problems, such as planning, scheduling, resource allocation, and configuration. The features of object-oriented analysis, design, and knowledge representation advantageous to current expertsystem applications are abstraction, encapsulation, and hierarchy. Examples of object-oriented expertsystems in the earth sciences at the US Geological Survey are a knowledge-based geographic information system (GIS), an integrated GIS and expertsystem, an enhanced digital line graph (DLG-E) extraction advisor, and a sedimentary basin analysis system.< >

It is shown how the object-oriented (OO) paradigm and the KADS methodology's four-layer knowledge paradigm can be used to develop a design method for knowledge-based systems (KBSs). An example is used to illustrate how this method helps the knowledge engineer not only in the design of the system, but also in the implementation of this design into a workable prototype of the system. The method can be implemented in an OO expertsystem shell that has extended OO programming features. Limitations in the use of state-of-the-art OO languages for knowledge representation are discussed.< >
