The design and implementation of a database modeling aid called Database Designer (DBD) using VP-expert are discussed. The DBD expert system is intended to help novice users design a proper database by asking questions of the user and thus incrementally building a structure for an extended entity relationship (ER) diagram. The authors discuss their approach to system design for DBD and implementation issues specific to VP-expert, such as combining backward chaining and forward chaining, procedural techniques, and transparency and visibility of VP-expert statements. This study indicates that applying a systematic, structural approach, properly commenting the code, and logically grouping rules can make an expert system programming approach viable for designing a complex procedural design application like DBD.< >

Although user-friendly and rule-based expert system shells ease the implementation of expert systems and allow for quick prototyping, their use could easily lead to ill-structured knowledge-bases. They provide no methodical way to design and maintain rule-bases (RBs). Thus, the use of these shells does not reduce the complexity of the RB design/maintenance methodology is given. The focus is on the implementation aspect of the methodology, and the RB size reduction methodology is formalized. The result is an integrated rule reduction system (IRRS) that checks for and detects incompleteness and inconsistencies in RBs and performs RB size reduction.< >

Since its formation, the Advanced Technology Branch of the US Air Force has taken a four-pronged approach toward advocating expert system use, involving extensive training, development of expert systems, research and acquisition of development tools, and marketing the technology to users. In the past five years, the Advanced Technology Branch has developed and delivered over a dozen expert systems to its customers, resulting in millions of dollar in cost savings. A study is made of each of the four elements of success, and how they contributed to the acceptance and use of expert systems by customers.< >

The genetic algorithm (GA) is a powerful search paradigm which combines elements from evolutionary biology with concepts from population genetics. Because they operate in a domain-independent fashion, GAs have been successfully applied to a wide variety of optimization and learning problems. A technique is presented by which genetic algorithms can be adapted to operate upon the LISP-like production rules typically used in expert systems. A brief overview is presented of genetic algorithms and genetics-based learning.< >

The problem of how to build expert systems for recognizing vague or incomplete images is addressed. The focus is on the partial match and estimation of supports, per degree of similarity, of each possible option. Two methods were used: a voting model interpretation of fuzzy sets to classify the objects, and the iterative assignment algorithm to obtain the support. To test the learning capabilities of this approach, an example of upper case letters was implemented.< >

A methodology is described for all phases of the development of knowledge-based applications. This approach is based on the use of a performance system as a formal language throughput the project for defining the product specifications, implementing the functionalities, and testing them. All project aspects are defined in a knowledge-base format and then replaced when needed by the corresponding module written in the appropriate conventional language. The relation between this crystal model of expert system growth and the emerging iterating software engineering approaches, such as the Boehm's Spiral model, is discussed. Requirements for such a formal language are investigated.< >

A description is presented of DX (Directory expert), which is a Lisp-based system that merges gridding specifications with page layout and graphic programs to create the NYNEX Yellow Pages telephone directory. This system uses a custom-built inference engine that drives the knowledge components and also uses domain-specific knowledge to optimize the page layout process. As pages are generated, the system tests each configuration based on NYNEX gridding specifications. The resulting pages are automatically evaluated so that the gridders can concentrate on correcting the difficult exceptions to the gridding specifications.< >

In active expert databases, current methodologies distinguish between the active execution of knowledge and the management of data. This distinction is extended to attributes, so that attributes also reflect both knowledge and data. The objective is to make the expert system more knowledgeable of, and responsive to, its own execution characteristics. Active databases are discussed with particular focus being given to execution determinism, basic principles of fuzzy logic and temporal issues, and various potential knowledge attributes that capture temporal execution and usage characteristics. The fuzzy interpretation of those characteristics in constraining the activity behind an active expert database system is discussed.< >

Results are presented of a survey of how commercial and government organizations are currently tackling key issues in expert system development. Recommendations made by methodology researchers are compared with the findings from a survey of over 30 organizations. The survey findings cover areas such as features of a successful application, project initiation activities, the overall life cycle, and the roles of prototyping, documentation, and the hardware and software environment. Lessons learned by survey respondents about methods and techniques which have proven particularly effective are included. A discussion of the differences between theory and practice centers around the role of prototyping in the life cycle, the documentation that is produced, and the amount of user interaction required.< >

Test results of an approach to evaluating the quality of expert systems are presented. The solution proposed is a multiple-criteria- and multiple-stakeholder-based subjective assessment technique. Its validity was established by conducting field tests with operational expert systems at 19 sites in the North American insurance industry. The results indicate that such a socio-technical approach to evaluating expert systems is a promising alternative to current ad hoc and anecdotal practices. It is the long-term goal of such a line of investigation to produce a diagnostic tool that would serve to support feedback in the knowledge engineering life cycle.< >
