ReDS, a distributed intelligent manufacturing scheduling system, was initially designed as a requirement-driven scheduling system and has evolved into a real-time distributed scheduling system. It is currently running at several VLSI manufacturing sites. The authors trace its development history and analyze the present system architecture for future system development. This report paper provides: (1) the development history of ReDS, (2) the distributed intelligent system approach of ReDS, and (3) the future research for the next generation of ReDS.< >

XAS is an expert system that contains knowledge for designing and simulating CCD chips. It synthesizes correct simulation programs automatically given the same process and mask data used by chip designers and selecting parameters according to the purpose of the simulation. XAS has the following characteristics. The XAS editors have expert knowledge of CCD chips and use it to display appropriate figures and menus. Because the user interface is mouse based, inputting data is both interactive and easy. In addition, XAS gives the same environment on every workstation connected within a local area network, so that many designers can access the system simultaneously.< >

A case study is presented of a successful intelligent system. CANASTA (the Crash Analysis Troubleshooting Assistant) is a knowledge-based system designed to assist support engineers in isolating the underlying causes of operating system crashes, whether due to hardware faults or system software bugs. CANASTA's success is largely due to a combination of project management actions and the innovative technical design and development of the system. The lessons learned from developing a large hybrid system such as CANASTA are presented.< >

An integrated system design is proposed and defined for the intelligent network. It is based on the integration of the Signaling system Number 7 (SS7) network with the conventional SCPs (service control points). This results in more effective introduction of new services. A call processing model that allows multiple application services to provide real-time behavior is proposed. An application of this model of call processing to the Private Virtual Network (PVN) application services is given.< >

The multi-expert distributed architecture (MEDA) tests predefined strategies and also builds and evaluates strategies by the automatic learning and self-organization provided by the entities emancipation process (EEP). The testing of strategies, together with the knowledge standardization mechanism provided by the association to the knowledge of additional dimensions within specific universes which grant the expansion of expert knowledge towards a common representation, allows MEDA to constitute a testbed for distributed artificialintelligence (DAI) techniques. The MEDA tool for automatic acquisition and automatic improvement of distributed solving techniques is intended to expand research in DAI toward automatic knowledge discovery.< >

A discussion is presented of an architecture called InFuse (Intelligent Fusion) for the multiple sensor fusion problem. InFuse exploits the notion of combining expert systems and neural networks to capture the advantages of both technologies. The application involves the extraction of natural terrain features from imagery provided by multiple sensors. In addition to the imagery, terrain knowledge in geographical databases needs to be integrated. The uniqueness of the approach lies in its ability to combine symbolic data of spatial databases and domain-specific knowledge about sensor behavior in expert systems with example-induced learning from neural networks to achieve a high classification rate. Results are presented to demonstrate the power of the approach.< >

A discussion is presented of EXACT (expert system acquisition tool), a model-based knowledge acquisition tool. EXACT supports knowledge engineers in structuring and maintaining the domain knowledge needed to execute a particular selection task. The following principles have guided the development of EXACT: knowledge acquisition tools are useful for knowledge engineers rather than domain experts; the dialogue between such a tool and the user should be one of mixed initiative; the output of the tool should be an implementation-independent knowledge document; it should be easy to add more functionality to the tool gradually. In order to be able to develop EXACT, a model of the selection task has been made. EXACT has been implemented in the object-oriented language Smalltalk/V.< >

A description of the Knowledge Engineering Workbench (KEW) developed within the ACKnowledge project is presented. KEW supports the knowledge engineer in all phases of knowledge-base systems development, from knowledge elicitation to knowledge-base validation. Compared to other computerized knowledge engineering environments, KEW integrates a full range of complementary knowledge acquisition tools. The KEW architecture allows those tools to be combined in a synergetic way and to support the knowledge engineering process at a fine-grain level. An example of using KEW to develop a telecommunication network diagnostic system is provided to illustrate its functionalities.< >

The prototype application of a distributed problem-solving framework (DPSF) is described. The DPSF is made up of the coarse-grained multiagent systems defined as a set of computational agents that autonomously execute. cooperate, and coordinate each other to solve the network management problems. This loosely coupled heterogeneous system is connected by a common bus. In the proposed architectural components of the DPSF, the blackboard modulus consists of a data blackboard and a control blackboard, and knowledge sources (KSs) are composed of a local-planning KS, a metaplanning KS, a communication KS, a domain KS and a constraint KS. It is found that the DPSF offers advantages of performance, reliability, extensibility and the ability to handle incomplete data and knowledge.< >

A knowledge-based application system for composite material design is presented. The system supports the engineer in designing optimized composite materials for highly stressed structural components of technical systems, e.g., a piston ring for an engine. Such components often require material properties which cannot be found within one specific material. Furthermore, in designing and producing composite materials, several other objectives. e.g. economical or ecological ones. can be achieved more adequately. To integrate the diverse, heterogeneous sources of knowledge and to build a modular. easily extensible system. a blackboard architecture has been chosen. The architecture is presented, and the usefulness of the system is illustrated by means of an example.< >
