A model and a methodology for managing the development of commercial expert systems involving multiple experts is presented. The model incorporates a view of the nature of human knowledge, the constraints of the technology, and pragmatic considerations of the organization in which the development takes place. The methodology engendered by this model introduces a new role, the Sherpa, and a new tool, the Knowledge Verification Template (KVT). This methodology has been successfully applied in multiple systems. Its specific application to the BioMark Program, a commercial preventive healthcare program, is presented.< >

The author explores a general framework for analyzing or synthesizing intelligent systems, as well as techniques for implementing them. The framework consists of six factors: purpose, space, structure, time, process and efficiency. The technologies involve the methods of artificial intelligence and strategies for developing knowledge-based systems. The framework has been used to develop diverse applications, ranging from an expert system for creative product design to a package for factory configurations. This framework is discussed in the context of an expert system for the design of personal computers.< >

During 1989 and 1990 the Commodity Classification expert system (ES) was developed for the US Department of Commerce. This object-oriented program develops a person/computer dialogue that simulates the process an expert would use to determine if a high tech commodity could be exported. New users had problems matching regulation subsection headings with data on the manufacturer's data sheet. The dual problem of searching both the regulation and the spec sheet for matching words was sometimes frustrating. This problem was reduced, but not solved, by adding a commercial program that could search the regulations, providing examples of the subsection headings, and providing definitions of technical terms.< >

The CALTREC project automated the process of creating State of California Travel Expense Claims. This project is a good representative of the types of projects expected to be done by the State of California. The application is heavily embedded into traditional data processing systems, which added much additional work outside the scope of what is considered to be knowledge engineering. The author describes the CALTREC application and why it was built, what it took to build the application and why traditional data processing skills were essential to the project's success. It is noted that the present work should be of interest to those who are considering building expert systems as well as to those who are evaluating alternative software and hardware platforms for implementation and deployment of expert systems applications.< >

A strategy is presented for transferring expert system technology from university to industry. This strategy is based on five years of experience in developing expert and knowledge-based systems for academic and industrial applications in Mexico. The strategy includes KBS (knowledge-based system) technology assimilation, applied research and development with graduate students in computer science and artificial intelligence, an annual program of seminars on expert systems, an annual international symposium on artificial intelligence applications, research agreements with companies to develop expert system prototypes in manufacturing, including the training of knowledge engineers from the sponsoring companies, and the formation of the Center for Artificial Intelligence to do human resources education, applied research, and technological development. Lessons learned in selling expert systems, problem domain selection, cost/benefit analysis, management of expert systems projects, and expert system tool selection are mentioned.< >

The author examines a case study of a beginning expert systems program at a large regional life insurance company, a program that began with excellent success, but has not been able to follow up on that success. Through examination of this case, the author points out lessons that can be learned from this experience, and suggests means of preventing this type of failure in other beginning-expert-systems programs. The first lesson learned is that there must be strong and consistent messages to management that the major benefits of the technology will be missed if the primary purpose of an expert-systems program is seen as short-term cost reduction. Secondly, there must be strong and consistent messages to management that education of middle managers is essential to the success of the program. Third for long-term success of the technology, there must be a plan for the development of critical mass in the organization. In many organizations, the best way to achieve critical mass is through the utilization of the experts themselves as end-user developers.< >

Since 1982 the US National Association of Corrosion Engineers (NACE) and the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) have collaborated under the NACE-NIST Corrosion Data Program to develop data resources of interest to the materials science and engineering communities. These resources have included expert systems, which have focused primarily on materials selection and usage applications in industry. A brief history of the program is presented, the expert systems developed therein are presented, and development methodologies are described. Particular emphasis is placed on the participation of the chemical process, oil and gas and electric power industries in the NACE-NIST Corrosion Data Program.< >

FAME is a long term project within the IBM Research Division, one of whose objectives is to provide a comprehensive advisory system for financial marketing to IBM marketing representatives. At the same time, FAME has served as a test vehicle for a number of ideas relating to knowledge representation, problem solving, and the management of large knowledge based systems. The author describes the FAME expert system, giving particular emphasis to testing and validation procedures that were instituted, and indicates what lessons have been learned. It is concluded that the use of a structured inheritance network, such as K-Rep, as the core knowledge representation service for an expert system provides considerable benefits in its construction. Its enforced semantics encourages a disciplined method of knowledge engineering. This forces system designers to make more careful representation decisions than would otherwise be made in a system without enforced semantics; at the same time, it performs a built-in consistency check as the attributes of objects in K-Rep are assigned values.< >

State-of-the-art research and implementation efforts being conducted in the area of expert database systems with the goal of developing intelligent and effective applications is examined. Various approaches taken to integrate expert systems and database systems are discussed. Next, a real-world application developed by the author using one of the outlined techniques is discussed in detail. This application consists in the implementation of a comprehensive computerized system to automate the educational activities of the American Red Cross. The insights gleaned from this effort are presented. The most important lesson learned was to stop thinking about rules in abstract terms and visualize them instead, as any other valid entity (or object) as a part of the overall data model.< >

Lessons learned from the experience of the Fleet Command Center Battle Management Program (FCCBMP) are documented. FCCBMP is an element of the Defense Advanced Project Agency's Strategic Computing Program (SCP), which aims to stimulate the development and application of advanced technologies for military problems. FCCBMP has been the most successful of the SCP programs to date in bringing expert systems into operational use. It is noted that lessons from the FCCBMP program can help in managing the development of expert systems and systems developed using rapid prototyping. It is concluded that FCCBMP has demonstrated the feasibility of applying expert systems to operational military problems. When developing expert systems intended to support operational users, there are strong advantages in developing expert systems on-site in the operational environment. The use of rapid prototyping does not mean undisciplined development. Rapid prototyping can be managed by selectively adapting traditional software engineering techniques for use during the development phase. The knowledge engineering required by an expert system project can suggest improvements to existing methods of operation.< >
