An abstraction-and-reimplementation paradigm is presented in which the source program is first analyzed in order to obtain a programming-language-independent abstract understanding of the computation performed by the program as a whole. The program is then reimplemented in the target language based on this understanding. The key to this approach is the abstract understanding obtained. It allows the translator to benefit from an appreciation of the global features of the source program without being distracted by what are considered irrelevant details. Knowledge-based translation via abstraction and reimplementation is described as one of the goals of the Programmer's Apprentice project. A translator which translates Cobol programs into Hibol (a very-high-level business data processing language) has been constructed. A computer which generates extremely efficient PDP-11 object code for Pascal programs has been designed.

This paper introduces the concept of knowledge management as a comprehensive system for managing and controlling the development and validation of a knowledge base which is a part of an expertsystem application. In most applications the complexity of the system and the representation used tend to obscure the structure and data which describe the knowledge domain which effectively inhibits Knowledge Verification and Validation and places severe constraints on the ability to extend and maintain a knowledge base. Ford Aerospace has pioneered a unique Knowledge Management system through the evolution of knowledge representation systems and knowledge acquisition tools which overcomes these traditional limitations. It can be anticipated that as expertsystems experience wide spread application, Knowledge Management will become an important component of the standard development methodology employed by most firms working in the field. In the near term, researchers need to continue to refine and extend the concept so its application achieves its potential for improving the quality and scope of AI projects.

T. is designed to provide Texas Instruments, special test equipment technicians with 'best first' advice for diagnosing, isolating and correcting product acceptance test failures. Most high-technology manufacturing programs and designs are not static. As projects mature, changes in special task equipment, the unit under test (UUT) and procedures occur;this evolution would drastically impact the efficacy of a traditional rule- or frame-based expertsystems. To cope with this dynamic nature, E. T. uses machine learning and adaptation techniques to continually acquire and compile knowledge about its domain. This knowledge is represented by symptom to corrective action links. Thus, E. T. 's advice is based on a 'life long data stream' rather than a single instantiation of product knowledge.
