The Interactive Experimenter Planning system (IEPS) Group at AlliedSignal Technical Services Corp. has been developing expertsystems for NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) since 1985. Several systems have been developed in the C language on IBM PCs and UNIX-based workstations. With the implementation of these systems, various generic, C-based tools for building new applications have been developed. These generic, C-based tools have now been organized into a toolkit called the IEPS Software Toolkit. The focus of this paper is on the IEPS Software Toolkit and its use. The categories of tools in the toolkit that are described include: data formatting and report generation tools, user interface tools, database tools, strategic planning tools and tactical planning tools.< >

The work presented is part of a more important project which aims at designing federated knowledge based-systems (FKBS). The purpose of FKBSs is to make autonomous, heterogeneous and eventually geographically distributed KBSs cooperate with each other. The first step towards such systems consists in facilitating the designer's access to the pre-existing expert processing capabilities of the organization. In that regard, the purpose of the authors is to propose a deductive database (DDB) which one can record, structure, maintain and produce information about the existing KBS and their reusable components (knowledge base, control process etc.). In addition to intelligent systemprojects support, the DDB can also serve for knowledge communication, human training and software re-usability purposes.< >

This paper describes ProloGA, a Prolog implementation of a genetic algorithm. Chromosomes and associated parameters were stored in a Prolog database. The genetic operators of crossover, mutation, and population fitness were encoded in Prolog clauses. The test application demonstrated the feasibility of developing genetic algorithms in Prolog. The advantages of Prolog over conventional languages include database functionality, built-in 'don't care' operator, compact, declarative code, and use of heuristic knowledge. It is suggested that genetic algorithms may enhance Prolog applications by adding flexibility and adaptive rule discovery to the heuristic knowledge approach of Prolog. The combination may prove to be synergistic when applied to combinatorially large, complex, fuzzy problems.< >

The progress is reported of a research project designed to explore an answer to the question 'Can knowledge-based systems (KBS) assist in product advertising decisions?' For this study a user-developed KBS prototype, the Product Position Strategy Advisor, was developed to advise market planners about the optimum advertising for a product. The recommendation is based on two major factors: the purchase behavior of the target market and the product's points of differences (i.e. the consumers' perceptions of the product's and the company's strengths and weaknesses). The prototype, which is still evolving, is described. It is limited to positioning consumer products which are new to the firm and sold primarily in supermarkets.< >

All investment decisions must be based on sound analysis of the possible outcome of the implementation. A simulation model to help quantify the benefits accruing out of an information system implementation as per specific environment of the user is discussed. The expertsystem presented may be used as a primary tool by the users who are planning to revamp or install MIS in their organisations. The rulebases can be updated by making new design files. At best it can provide reasonable results depending on the validity of the design file it uses. The system helps those planning an investment into MIS to evaluate the effectiveness of their decision in terms of pay back period and person hours saved. Such analysis can help in quantification of the benefits accruing out of an investment into IT.< >

An expertsystem for aiding material selection process is proposed which, in conjunction with TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Situation), provides a very effective and efficient technique for material selection for a component. TOPSIS is a highly advanced optimization technique which requires that the user provides an index of relative importance for different properties by the author, the relative importance rating to be decided by the designers. However, the designers may not arrive at the same conclusion due to their different rating technique even though they use the same technique. In the proposed method, an expertsystem has been presented, which uses a small tool called Rulemaster and OPSS (developed at IIT Delhi) that facilitates the development of particular consultant paradigms. In identifying the knowledge base to be included in the system, special care was taken so that different designers get uniform results by using the proposed system.< >

With the globalisation of business, the implementation of turnkey projects is becoming increasingly complex. Inputs from different and diverse sources, coordination and synchronizing of delivery schedules, and cost-reduction targets call for powerful, effective and intelligent tools. Without such tools, an unexpected situation can put the project manager under stress which can consequently lead to wrong decisions. Therefore, there is a necessity today for online systems that can diagnose the causes of problems, help the project management to arrive at quick and proper decisions as well as identify ways to take corrective actions. The important parameters for online implementation of such a diagnostic system are the accuracy and speed of the diagnosis. The concepts used to realise these parameters have a strong influence on the selection of the most suitable tool for a given application. Current concepts such as establish-refine and hypothesis-test are explained. Furthermore, the representation of the knowledge in data files along with an appropriate illustration are also presented.< >
