At the cusp of the current revolution is the idea that traditional information stovepipes should be dismantled and replaced with a dynamic and distributed information universe, allowing people, systems, and ideas to flow freely among and across organizational boundaries. Quietly fueling this collaborative revolution are so-called Service Oriented architectures (SOAs) - those in which the capabilities of the system are exposed via Web Services and made available to the network. The open Market Evolutionary Development (OMED) model is a template that defines a community-driven standards body by providing a marketplace for the creation and use of Web Service interface standards. These standards ensure the interoperability and compatibility of services within a SOA. The OMED template defines: (1) a demand-driven economy around which Web Service interface specifications are defined and maintained;(2) the mechanism that ensures a balance between stability and innovation;and (3) the process by which the Community operates.

Online communities are described in terms of collections of virtual neighborhoods, each of which is a sub-set of interdependent members. The significant virtual neighborhoods are revealed by fitting parametric Markov Field models (p*) to the response relations of the communities. The underlying theoretical mechanisms are then deduced by matching the revealed virtual neighborhoods with the predictions of network emergence theories. We demonstrate that the underlying mechanisms are related to specific design features of the communities. This method can be extended to other relations in online communities and to longitudinal analysis, and applied to real-time monitoring of online communications.

In organizations today there exists an amplified need for increased integration and collaboration within and across organizational boundaries. With the emergence of Web Service technologies, has come a significant architectural shift in Service Oriented architectures (SOA). Built on pervasive technologies such as HTTP and XML, Web Services has the potential to gain broad adoption over its predecessors such as DCOM and CORBA and has the support of industry leaders such as Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, and IBM. Web Services technology is well positioned to become the primary solution for business integration and collaboration problems due to its decentralized, loosely coupled, and highly interoperable architecture. This highly interoperable architecture allows Web Services to be consumed and built using any development technology that supports the Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP), the foundation of Web Services communications. However, securing and utilizing Web Services within a SOA introduces new obstacles that cannot be fully addressed by existing information technology (IT) solutions.

network-on-chip (NoC) has been proposed as a solution for the communication challenges of System-on-chip (SoC) design in the nanoscale regime. SoC design offers the opportunity for incorporating custom NoC architectures that are more suitable for a particular application, and do not necessarily conform to regular topologies. This paper presents novel linear programming based techniques for synthesis of custom NoC architectures. In the nanoscale regime, low power consumption would continue to be an important design goal. We first discuss an optimal mixed integer linear programming (MILP) formulation that synthesizes a low power NoC architecture subject to the performance constraints. The MILP formulation is limited by large run times. We next present heuristic techniques that exploit clustering, and 0-1 constraint relaxation to reduce the run times of the formulation. The techniques minimize power as the primary goal, and minimize the number of routers (area) as a secondary goal. We present an analysis of the quality of the results and the solution times of the proposed techniques by extensive experimentation with the realistic benchmarks. The clustering based heuristic generates results whose power consumption is within 11% of the MILP solutions and its average run time is 171.1 seconds. The average run time of the relaxation and rounding based techniques is less than 2 seconds, and the power consumption of their solutions is within 58% of the MILP result. © 2004 ieee.

A collaboration project with SENGATEC has resulted in a platform for distributed real-time programming which consists of an open source virtual machine for distributed real-time control, named rt-dvm(1) and a toolset ems-drd(2), intended to help application engineers to configure and to develop distributed control applications. Driven by Internet technologies, new commercial requirements like concurrent manufacturing and progress in computer architecture, it is now evident that future automation systems will be based on cluster technology: Up to several hundred embedded controllers with different architectures and performance will be needed for the goal of just-in-time and just-on-demand production. The search for the "right" architecture for a virtual machine (VM) which meets all real-time requirements, the different available features (memory sizes, performance,...) for the targets and the simplicity of the model are the driving forces throughout the development stage of our platform, not to mention the usability tests we have done in parallel to create a user-friendly platform. The rt-dvm turns a heterogeneous world of embedded controllers into a homogeneous world of one machine with a small set of orthogonal commands. Every other higher level control concept can be built on our VM. The actual underlying technology is the open source software Linux and RT-Linux (FSMLabs). The development platform ems-drd is based on two premises: The simplicity of the operation and the modularity of the entire program package. Through that it offers enterprises in flexible form the potential to integrate system know-how over the rt-dvm into their own processes. The features and strengths of this new approach to distributed real-time programming will be demonstrated in the exhibition area of INDIN'04. Further informations can be found on http://***.

Modem network processors deliver a set of methods for implementing critical sections. A number of them rely on specific hardware support and capabilities, while software techniques are still available when hardware support is not flexible enough. network processors are dedicated to packet processing and their main goal is to achieve the best possible packet processing performance. Therefore, when choosing the implementation method for a particular problem that will be protected by a critical section, the aim must me for the method to influence the overall system performance A wrongly implemented critical section can very easily degrade the level of parallelism and in consequence the performance of the whole system. Sometimes even correctly implemented critical sections can negatively impact the speed of paths that do not need to be protected with a critical section.

Highly competitive and open environments should encompass mechanisms that will assist service providers in accounting for their interests, i.e., offering at a given period of time adequate quality services in a cost efficient manner which is highly associated to efficiently managing and fulfilling current user requests. In this paper, service task assignment problem is addressed from one of the possible theoretical perspectives, while new functionality is introduced in service architectures that run in open environments in order to support the proposed solution. The pertinent problem is concisely defined, mathematically formulated, computationally efficient solved and evaluated through simulation experiments.

Energy efficient embedded systems consist of a heterogeneous collection of very specific building blocks, connected together by a complex network of many dedicated busses and interconnect options. The trend to merge multiple functions into one device makes the design and integration of these "systems-on-chip" (SOC's) even more problematic. Yet, specifications and applications are never fixed and require the embedded units to be programmable. The topic of this paper is to give the designer architectures and design techniques to find the right balance between energy efficiency and flexibility. The key is to include programmability (or reconfiguration) at the right level of abstraction and tuned to the, application domain. The challenge is to provide an exploration and programming environment for this heterogeneous architecture platform.
