In the past, wireless network reliability issues have received limited attention. Previously proposed solutions have focused on protection against base station failures, which may require significantly more base stations than necessary. Actual data from wireless carriers suggest that problems in the backhaul are the uttermost reliability problems faced, and is therefore the main focus of this work. Current radio access networks are based on tree and star-like topologies, which have no inherent restorability properties. We propose a heuristic topology enhancement method that adds redundant spans and upgrades existing infrastructure cost-effectively, in order to create partially meshed architectures that could provide the desired level of restorability against single span failure scenarios. Both span and path restoration techniques are explored. The algorithm was tested using several different variants of restoration mechanisms. Results show that the proposed heuristic algorithm is able to achieve reasonably good solutions in a time scale that is several orders of magnitude faster than an optimization approach based on binary integer programming formulation.

This paper provides the novel symbolically oriented approach to open access transmission network congestion management. Transactions are the DC load flow symbolic simulator generated transfer functions. Congestion management is conceived as a systematic procedure based on linear programming. The DC load flow symbolic simulator generates all constraints and the black-box optimization library function is used to solve the problem of congestion on a sample power system.

This paper proposes a scalable design for next-generation optical cross-connects (OXCs), where a novel strategy for dimensioning the network switching capability as a long term planning is presented. When traffic demand grows, the proposed scheme simply expands the switching capacity of OXCs in waveband- and fiber-switching tiers. To minimize the number of extra fibers for waveband- and fiber-switching tiers required to satisfy a given traffic matrix, we formulate the problem of routing and wavelength assignment with tunnel allocation (RWAT) into two integer linear programming (ILP) processes that are performed sequentially. Experiments are conducted on two sample networks to compare the throughput and the number of switch points when the networks adopt different switching architectures with different traffic loads. We conclude that the proposed optimization scheme can dimension the networks with expandability and scalability to the growing traffic demand.

One currently observes a multiplication of actors and technologies involved in the provisioning of telecommunications services. To represent them and their relationships, to understand the stakes, many models have been designed, each one with its own application zone: business models, network management and architectures, etc. At the same time, the road towards next generation networks (NGN) needs to be carefully mastered. NGN are expected to support all kind of services, to provide generalized mobility with QoS guarantee and to be open with standardized interfaces and protocols. So one needs tools to deal consistently with this context complexity. This paper addresses a global framework for telecommunications architecture analysis, able to deal with the complexity of the domain. The framework is then illustrated by two applications: the first one presents a global QoS framework and the second one deals with the IP QoS issue.

Reconfigurable computing systems have shown the potential to surpass conventional processor architectures in performance for a growing range of applications. That performance, however, must be attained without significantly changing the design effort on the programmer's part, and without drastically increasing compilation time. In this paper, we present our compiler framework for mapping computation kernels to the reconfigurable clusters of Amalgam, a clustered programmable-reconfigurable processor. We first promote the use of the gated singular-assignment program dependence graph, a parallel intermediate program representation, to represent computation kernels. We then present an algorithm for mapping a computation kernel into the control FSM and datapath for a reconfigurable cluster. Finally, we describe our fast datapath synthesis tool-flow which preserves regularity and reduces the problem size by not flattening the datapath to gates.

We seek to make robot programming more efficient by developing a standard abstract interface for robot hardware, based on familiar techniques from operating systems and network engineering. This paper describes the application of three well known abstractions, the character device model, the interface/driver model, and the client/server model to this purpose. These abstractions underlie Player/Stage, our open source project for rapid development of robot control systems. One product of this project is the Player Abstract Device Interface (PADI) specification, which defines a set of interfaces that capture the functionality of logically similar sensors and actuators. This specification is the central abstraction that enables Player-based controllers to run unchanged on a variety of real and simulated devices. We propose that PADI could be a starting point for development of a standard platform for robot interfacing, independent of Player, to enable code portability and re-use, while still providing access to the unique capabilities of individual devices.

Wavelength band switching (WBS) has only recently attracted attention from the optical networking industry for its practical importance in reducing the control complexity and cost of optical cross-connects (OXCs). However, WBS-related problems of theoretical interest have not been addressed thoroughly by the research community, and many issues are still wide open. In particular, WBS is different from wavelength routing, and thus techniques developed for wavelength-routed networks (including e.g., those for traffic grooming) cannot be directly applied to effectively address WBS-related problems. In this paper, we first propose a new multigranular OXC (MG-OXC) architecture for WBS, which is more flexible than any existing WBS node architectures. We also adopt the most powerful waveband assignment strategy, and develop an efficient heuristic algorithm called Balanced Path routing with Heavy-Traffic first (BPHT). To verify its near-optimality, we also develop an integer linear programming (ILP) model. Both the ILP and the BPHT algorithms can handle the case with multiple fibers per link and hence are more general than our previous single-fiber solutions X. Cao et al. (2002). We conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the benefits of WBS through detailed analysis and simulations. We show that the proposed heuristic BPHT can perform much better than a heuristic which applies the optimal routing and wavelength assignment (RWA) method. We also show that WBS using BPHT is even more beneficial in multifiber networks than in single-fiber networks in terms of reducing the port count. Our analytical and simulation results also provide valuable insights into the effect of wavelength band granularity, as well as the trade-offs between the wavelength-hop and the port count required in WBS networks.

It is currently a challenge to evaluate and compare network processor-based (a.k.a. NPU-based) applications due to the heterogeneity of the application designs and hardware architectures. Many research works have been done in the area of packet classifications, which were directed towards proposing high-speed firewall implementation algorithms. However, few researches focus on providing standard benchmarking methodology for a specific class of firewall. This paper presents a benchmarking methodology for NPU-based stateful firewall. The aim is to allow 'apple-to-apple' comparison among similar firewalls available in the market, and to provide practical benchmarks that exhibit realistic performance numbers. The key aspects of this work are benchmark specifications, separation of benchmark granularity in a layered manner, and the means of measurement. Finally, a system-level benchmark is applied on a stateful firewall implemented on Intel's IXP1200 network processor as a proof-of-concept of this work.

This paper describes the implementation of the OKE, which allows users other than root to load native and fully optimised code in the Linux kernel. Safety is guaranteed by trust management, language customisation and a trusted compiler. By coupling trust management with the compiler, the OKE is able to vary the level of restrictions on the code running in the kernel, depending on the programmer's privileges. Static sandboxing is used as much as possible to check adherence to the security policies at compile time.
