A key feature of active networks is the capability to dynamically deploy services. In this paper, we present a scheme to classify service deployment mechanisms of existing or future active network architectures. Distributed algorithms (services), as being implemented in active networks, can be described based on active packets or as distributed programs running on active nodes. Although both programming models are basically equivalent, some services are more naturally implemented in either way. This paper proposes an active node architecture that supports the implementation and deployment of services according to both programming models. We point out that a combination of in-band and out-of-band service deployment is needed to dynamically deploy services implemented in either model. Furthermore, we argue that composing services from service logic implemented in either programming model is beneficial for the design of efficient and flexible services. We reason that a service abstraction in the form of a service description language is necessary to cope with real world scenarios.

This paper proposes an architecture for active network nodes, called Active Packet Editing (APE). The design of APE focuses on accelerating the functions that are essential to active network operation, such as packet classification and NAT. The twofold architecture of APE combines a software active packet processor with an efficient packet editor based on flexible hardware. Based on preset rules (pattern, action), the packet editor classifies and modifies, to a limited extent, packets that pass through the node. Upon the receipt of active packets, the software active packet processor dynamically configures the packet editor. To prevent interference among active applications, and thus ensure security, cryptographic techniques are used to distribute a flow specific key string, which is used to authenticate succeeding packets in the same flow. We are developing a prototype APE node.

Many existing proposals for introducing network support for multicast transport require the establishment of signaling paths among adjacent active routers in a session. We present a general-purpose, lightweight protocol to establish a signaling overlay among sparsely deployed active nodes. The resulting overlay is tied to the underlying multicast route and adapts to changes in its topology. In addition, we make this overlay available to other protocols by means of efficient communication primitives to provide reliable signaling between neighboring active routers. Our protocol and associated services can serve as a building block for a variety of active multicast services and greatly simplify their development. We describe its applicability for implementing several previously proposed services.

The advent of class-based networks has brought new needs for network traffic control in order to assure a certain QoS level. Despite the existing proposals, achieving a generic admission control (AC) strategy for traffic entering these networks is still an open issue. This paper provides new insights on how AC shall be accomplished proposing an encompassing AC model for multi-service class-based networks, which covers both intra-domain and end-to-end operation, without requiring changes in the network core and complex AC signaling. For each service type, AC is distributed and based on both on-line edge-to-edge monitoring of relevant QoS parameters and SLSs utilization. Service monitoring, performed at egress nodes, provides adequate metrics to ingress nodes which take implicit or explicit AC decisions based on service-dependent criteria. Although being oriented to flow AC, the model can easily be applied to SLS AC. SLS auditing and SLS traffic conditioning are tasks also covered.

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of a wide range of protection strategies against all single link failures in all-optical WDM networks based on mesh and multi-ring architectures. In the mesh architecture, three protection strategies, namely, minimal cost, single link basis and disjoint path protection strategies are investigated. In the multi-ring architecture, the distribution and non-distribution traffic multi-ring design strategies are extensively examined. Although, the concepts of mesh and multi-ring designs have previously been perceived to be fundamentally different, in this paper we shall explain and show that these two architectures can be systematically related and viewed as a unified concept. This new way of looking at the fully survivable network design helps understand clearly the mechanisms and performance of each protection strategy. To minimize the system cost of 100% protection WDM networks, mathematical models based on the integer linear programming (ILP) are derived as the tool for achieving optimal path placement, wavelength assignment and ring selection simultaneously. Apart from the mathematical model, the main contributions of this paper are the analysis and comparison in aspects of the spare capacity requirement and ease of operation and practical feasibility amongst these protection strategies. However, the emphasis will be on the multi-ring protection schemes. In addition, the influence of the number of multiplexed wavelengths per fiber to design outcomes and the benefit of having wavelength conversion capability in WDM network environment are also studied.

In conventional data communication networks, the basic network components are passive, where routing decisions are made solely on the basis of packet header information. In contrast, active networks allow added computation within the network through user-defined routing and processing instructions, providing the on-demand installation of powerful software-based network services. As an adaptation of previous active networks, this paper introduces an architecture based entirely in middleware. By utilizing middleware services, the architecture resolves authentication, memory-management, and interconnectivity issues otherwise assumed as inherent, and enables a highly functional multiple-language interface for the deployment of dynamic protocols. After describing the architectural design, an empirical system evaluation is presented with comparisons to both conventional network protocols, and a wellknown existing active network architecture. Results indicate performance improvements over the existing architecture, and demonstrate the feasibility of a multiple-language active network infrastructure implemented entirely in middleware.

We present a general-purpose toolkit for network address translation in Click, a modular, component-based networking system. network address translation, or NAT, was designed to allow disparate address realms to communicate. The components of our toolkit can be combined in a variety of ways to implement this task and many others, including some that, superficially, have nothing to do with address translation. Our NAT components are more flexible than monolithic alternatives. They concern themselves solely with address translation; separate components handle related functions, such as classification. The user can choose where network address translation takes place in relation to other router functions; combine multiple translators in a single configuration; and use NAT in unintended, surprising ways. We describe our design approach, demonstrate its flexibility by presenting a range of examples of its use, and evaluate its performance. Our components have been in use in a production environment for over eighteen months.

There is growing interest in network processor technologies capable of processing packets at line rates. In this paper, we present the design, implementation and evaluation of NetBind, a high performance, flexible and scalable binding tool for dynamically constructing data paths in network processor-based routers. The methodology that underpins NetBind balances the flexibility of network programmability against the need to process and forward packets at line speeds. Data paths constructed using NetBind seamlessly share the resources of the same network processor. We compare the performance of NetBind to the MicroACE system developed by Intel to support binding between software components running on Intel IXP1200 network processors. We evaluate these alternative approaches in terms of their binding overhead, and discuss how this can affect the forwarding performance of IPv4 data paths running on IXP1200 network processor-based routers. We show that NetBind provides better performance in comparison to MicroACE with smaller binding overhead. The NetBind source code described and evaluated in this paper is freely available on the Web (***/genesis/netbind) for experimentation.

dRecently, computer network technology and distributed information processing technology have been developing rapidly. In the meantime, deregulation is starting and will be spreading in the electric power industry in Japan. Consequently, customers request low cost power supply and high quality services from the power suppliers. Corresponding to these requirements caused by deregulation, the authors developed a prototype power systems information delivering system supplying useful power systems information such as power failures. The prototype system was developed based on SCOPE (System Configuration Of PowEr control system) architecture that we had already proposed[4)[8]. SCOPE architecture assures flexibility and scalability for power systems. The prototype system consists of an application layer based on a Web browser, an information model layer which reflects the power systems behavior and a distributed object management layer using CORBA and OS/network layer. In this paper, we introduce the concept, functions, implementation of the prototype system and its evaluation results.

Today, an increasing number of important network services, such as content distribution, replicated services, and storage systems, are deploying overlays across multiple Internet sites to deliver better performance, reliability and adaptability. Currently however, such network services must individually reimplement substantially similar functionality. For example, applications must configure the overlay to meet their specific demands for scale, service quality and reliability. Further, they must dynamically map data and functions onto network resources-including servers, storage, and network paths-to adapt to changes in load or network conditions. In this paper, we present Opus, a large-scale overlay utility service that provides a common platform and the necessary abstractions for simultaneously hosting multiple distributed applications. In our utility model, wide-area resource mapping is guided by an application's specification of performance and availability targets. Opus then allocates available nodes to meet the requirements of competing applications based on dynamically changing system characteristics. Specifically, we describe issues and initial results associated with: i) developing a general architecture that enables a broad range of applications to push their functionality across the network, ii) constructing overlays that match both the performance and reliability characteristics of individual applications and scale to thousands of participating nodes, iii) using Service Level Agreements to dynamically allocate utility resources among competing applications, and iv) developing decentralized techniques for tracking global system characteristics through the use of hierarchy, aggregation, and approximation.
