In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in introducing more advanced services and functionality into networks. This is the primary driver behind the ongoing research on active and programmable networking. A central part of this research is to design an extensible architecture for network nodes that can be dynamically specialized to provide customized network services, to converge on a set of basic facilities provided by all nodes, and to provide the interface to these facilities. While several architectures have been proposed, they have so far been realized using prototype operating systems or proprietary programming languages. Lack of robust platforms for experimentation remains a significant obstacle for research on new network services. We have built a platform for research on active and programmable networks, based on Linux. Our changes to the kernel proper are minimal and are contained in a small kernel patch that is compatible with multiple versions of Linux (2.2.2 and higher), enabling us to benefit from the rapid evolution and industrial support of Linux in general, and specifically those parts that are outside of our interests. In this paper, we describe the platform and give examples of its use.

Recent advances in high-speed networks, rapid improvements in microprocessor design, and availability of highly performing clustering software implementations enables cost-effective high-performance parallel computing on clustered low cost workstations and PCs. Such clusters are very attractive because they rely on available of the shelf hardware and software technologies, To simplify programming in network environments and to realise component-based software architectures, many models have emerged as possible standards, namely, RPC: Remote Procedure Call, DCE: Distributed Computing Environment, DCOM: Distributed Component Object Model, CORBA: Common Object Request Broker Architecture, PVM: Parallel Virtual Machine and MPI: Message Passing Interface. The MPI approach is considered one of the most mature methods currently used in parallel programming. MPI implementations on emerging cluster interconnects are an important requirement for useful parallel processing on cost-effective computer clusters. This paper offers an overview of different parallel computing environments and models. Functionality and performance of MPI running on ho,homogeneous and heterogeneous workstation clusters are compared. The project goals, laboratory environment, performance measurements, future work, and a conclusion are presented.

NetTap is a new platform for prototyping, field testing, and deploying network services. NetTap is based on a PC running FreeBSD, and can be configured as a bridge, router, or host. NetTap's API allows user level network applications to send or receive packets on standard network adapters without copying or system call overheads. NetTap's watchdog timer and simple bypass switch can be configured to preserve network connectivity in case of NetTap failure. Experiments demonstrate substantial performance advantages of the NetTap API over FreeBSD's network programming APIs (Berkeley packet filters, ipfv, and divert sockets). In particular, NetCounter, an application for capturing and aggregating IP network billing records, achieves greater throughput on NetTap at user level than does FreeBSD's IP forwarding at kernel level.

In this paper, we apply an optimal control approach on a real irrigation system based on nonlinear black-box model. open channel systems are nonlinear, and their dynamics are based on the Saint-Venant equations, and having nonlinear component structures. For these reasons! linear models are not well adapted even less complex concerning;the models number of parameters. Water waste in large systems are not negligible, so we have an energy waste by pumping useless water. Our goal is to find the control trajectories by minimizing the energy consumption subject to different constraints like the physical limits of the system and also the water systems dynamics. The optimal solution is generated by some sequential quadratic programming algorithm SQP. In this paper, we apply an optimal control approach on a real irrigation system, the Canal de la Bourne (France) using a non-linear black-box model NARX.

End-to-end connectivity is growing increasingly diverse, with orders-of-magnitude differences in characteristics throughout the network. At the same time, most applications assume a level of network characteristics below which they either provide no service, or service at a cost that is higher than the user is willing to pay. open-architecture networks can help applications degrade gracefully when network conditions are poor by pushing adaptation technology into the network. Unfortunately, since adaptation seeks to change the data stream during transmission, it is incompatible with the traditional model for reliable data streams. A new model of reliability is required to allow general the adaptation of reliable data streams. We propose one possible model that provides reliable delivery of the semantic meaning in the data stream, despite adaptation. We present this model in the context of Conductor, a framework for distributed adaptation. By using a reliability model that is compatible with adaptation, Conductor allows arbitrary distributed components to operate on a data stream without reducing end-to-end reliability. While Conductor is one possible adaptation service, it is also an example of the type of reliability model required in open-architecture networks.

This paper reports the current status of the standardization activities for the open and networked industrial robots in Japan. First, historical and technical background for the standardization of the programming interface for industrial robots is described. Second, the requirement of the PC-based approach for networking are explained and design philosophy is explained. Last, the cui rent situation of the implementation and technical issues left are shown with the prospective plan to the international standard and the de-facto standard.

Several systems for automatic gesture recognition have been developed using different strategies and approaches. In these systems the recognition engine is mainly based on three algorithms: dynamic pattern matching, statistical classification, and neural networks (NN). In that paper three architectures for the recognition of dynamic gestures using the above mentioned techniques or a hybrid combination of them are presented and compared. For all architectures a common preprocessor receives as input a sequence of color images, and produces as output a sequence of feature vectors of continuous parameters. The first two systems are hybrid architectures consisting of a combination of neural networks and hidden Markov models (HMM). NNs are used for the classification of single feature vectors while HMMs for the modeling of sequences of them with the aim to exploit the properties of both these tools. More precisely, in the first system a Kohonen feature map (SOM) clusters the input space. Further, each code-book is transformed into a symbol from a discrete alphabet and fed into a discrete HMM for classification. In the second approach a Radial Basis Function (RBF) network is directly used to compute the HMM state observation probabilities. In the last system only dynamic programming techniques are employed. An input sequence of feature vectors is matched by some predefined templates by using the dynamic time warping (DTW) algorithm. Preliminary experiments with our baseline systems achieved a recognition accuracy up to 92%. All systems use input from a monocular color video camera, are user-independent but so far, they are not yet real-time.

One of the traditional goals of networking has been to hide details of network topology from end users. As networks become larger and more heterogeneous, however, situations arise in which the ability to identify particular topological properties enables capabilities and performance that are difficult to achieve with a purely "black box" interface to network topology. Examples of such situations include deployment of active networking functionality to strategic points (e.g., upstream from a lossy link) or the construction of a secure overlay topology on a network with selective support for IP security. On the other hand, an approach that "opens up" the network without constraints seems neither necessary nor practical. We therefore propose a method to query and synthesize network information that allows constrained programmability. We demonstrate the method on a set of examples, and we discuss our implementation within an active networking environment.

Traditional IP accounting infrastructures cannot withstand the shock waves produced by voice over IP integration, increasingly large accounting data volumes, adaptive pricing schema that reflect resource utilization, and real time requirements on accounting applications such as billing and traffic monitoring. To suit tomorrow's networks, the Active IP Accounting Co-processor Environment (AIACE) argues that the number of accounting tasks performed at the network nodes and at the accounting servers be fluid and not necessarily known a priori. The AIACE infrastructure introduces the notion of an active accounting co-processor coupled with the network node. This co-processor performs custom operations on accounting data exactly where the accounting data is being generated. For instance, the co-processor can efficiently manage pre-paid debit card semantics, reflect settlements among providers, apply fraud detectors, or enable real time accounting data mining, The AIACE infrastructure dynamically pushes intelligence into network nodes and applies Active networks themes to network management. Isolated from any problematic interference with end-to-end data paths, AIACE can set IP accounting free to exploit the power of open and active network nodes.

A Virtual Private network (VPN) that exists over a public network infrastructure like the Internet is both cheaper and more flexible than a network comprising dedicated semi-permanent links such as leased tines. In contrast to leased-line private networks, the topology of such a VPN can be altered on-the-fly, and its lightweight nature means that creation and modification can take place over very short timescales. In a programmable networking environment, such VPNs can be enhanced with fine-grained customer control right down to the level of the physical network resources, allowing a VPN to be employed for almost any conceivable network service. The paper examines some of the issues present in the provision of programmable VPNs. In particular, automated VPN "design" is considered, that is, how a VPN description can be translated to a set of real physical resources that meets customer requirements while also satisfying the goals of the VPN Service Provider (VSP). This problem-the distribution of resource allocations across network nodes in an optimal manner-has relevance for other approaches to VPN provision such as differentiated services in the Internet. The work presented was carried out using a programmable networks infrastructure based on the switchlets mechanism (J.E. van der Merwe and I. Leslie, 1997). It shows that automated VPN creation resulting in a guaranteed resource allocation is a feasible procedure that works well for both the VSP and for the customer that has requested a VPN. The problems inherent in dynamic VPN reconfiguration are also explored, together with the methods by which these might be addressed.
