He received the B. Eng. degree in electrical engineering from Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1989. He is at present completing the M.A.Sc. degree in electrical engineering at Concordia University. (S'75–S'79–M'79–SM'86) received the Ph.D. degree from Southern Methodist University Dallas TX in 1979. He spent the next two years working as a Visiting Professor in Egypt after which he moved to Ottawa Canada in 1982. He assumed teaching and research positions in Carleton and Manitoba Univerities and later moved to Concordia University Montreal Canada in 1983 where he is now a Professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department. He has published numerous papers in IEEE and international journals in the areas of spread spectrum and networking. He is a well-known expert in these areas and serves as a consultant to many companies. His current research interests include wide-band metropolitan networks switching architectures and performance of on-board multibeam satellites acquisitionless CDMA networks code distribution and orthogonalization of CDMA signals responsive congestion control for ATM-based networks ARQ techniques and investigation of the novel SUGAR CDMA systems in fading channels. Dr. Elhakeem is a Senior Member of the Canadian Electrical Engineering Society and Armed Forces Association. He has chaired numerous technical sessions in IEEE Conferences was the Technical Program Chairman for IEEE Montech 1986 Montreal Canada. Dr. Elhakeem is the key guest editor of theIEEE Journal of Selected Areas in Communicationsfor the May June issues 1993 covering CDMA networks. In this paper, the performance of a new movable boundary accessing (MBA) technique for future integrated services multibeam satellite systems is studied. The multiservice environment considered includes both asynchronous and isochronous traffic consisting of video, voice, file transfer and interactive data. The movable boundary access technique proposed here will maximize the utilization of the up-link frame capacity. It is shown that the potential user population is substantially increased with the use of a moving boundary policy with minimal overhead.

Over the last few years, considerable effort has been applied within standards bodies, particularly ITU-TS, toward the modelling of management information in transmission equipment. This work has been motivated by recent pushes for improved performance and interoperability among different vendors' equipment, and enabled by the transition to the Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH). To date, this effort has focused on applying an object-oriented model for the specification of transmission equipment characteristics (referred to as `managed objects'. Supporting standards enable network management systems to view transmission equipment in a common way across a standardized interface suite, regardless of manufacturer, as an application of TMN (Telecommunication Management network) principles. Modelling tools which support this approach make assumptions about the partitioning of management behaviors which are representative of existing management practices. In this regard, they adequately address the needs of current management architectures. As these practices evolve to support new and unforseen services, a demand for even higher levels of management system reliability and performance will emerge. New technology development will provide distributed architectures to satisfy these demands. Object models must progress in synchrony with these unfolding architectures in order to describe network-level management behaviors, which include both those of the managed objects and the management applications. In this paper, we report on the results of an empirical experiment to assess the viability of open Distributed Processing (ODP) concepts in the characterization of these network behaviors. This includes a brief overview of SDH technology and the standardized functional architecture of a SDH network;an informal description of an example of a key network management application, path setup;an application of ODP concepts to refine this specification;and finally, a presentation of ou

The object-oriented (OO) paradigm was used extensively in a medium-sized software development project involving a team of 30 programmers over 18 months spanning late 1990 and through 1991, implementing specifications in excess of 800 written pages. The OO paradigm permeated the project as the OO development methodology and specifications were mapped to OO programming concepts using newly available OO tools. The approach was found to be valuable in decoupling the various programmer subgroups, shortening overall development cycles by allowing concurrent coding of distinct software phases, reducing testing times, minimizing modification impacts, and providing a standard framework on which future applications could be built. On the negative side, the combination of OO and non-OO tools created administrative complexities in the linking of libraries as well as source code control. Overall, the combination of methodology, information model, and corresponding OO programming tools proved to be an effective approach for a medium-sized software development with functional requirements.< >

Scalable multiprocessors that support a shared-memory image to application programmers are typically based on physical memory modules that are distributed. Consequently, the access times for a particular processor to various parts of physical memory differ. The authors explore the implications of this nonuniformity in memory access times. In particular, the study the effect of hot-spots in hierarchical large scale NUMA multiprocessors. They have developed an analytical model of access latencies and contention for shared resources in the interconnection network that links the processors and memory modules. The objective is to provide a better understanding of nonuniform memory access times in scalable architectures. They show the extent to which a variable can be shared before it becomes a performance bottleneck, and assess the potential gain from replication of shared data items. They also demonstrate that the backoff value (after a memory request rejection) must be chosen carefully to balance memory access time and network utilization and that memory utilization is improved by allowing memory request buffering.

A predominant task in the field of integrated network management today is to support standardized managed object libraries. In particular, two different types of manufacturer-independent libraries must be taken into consideration: the OSI libraries (e.g. from ISO and NM Forum) and the Internet MIBs from the Internet Activities Board. A powerful software development environment is necessary to be able to solve the task of managed object implementation in an effective and efficient way. The authors consider the inductive modeling technology from Cabletron to be an adequate approach. Experience of prototype implementations of both OSI and Internet managed object libraries based on this new technology is presented in the paper.< >

The scalability of distributed database protocols and algorithms as the systems become geographically distributed or as the number of system components increase has often been questioned and stated as an open problem. Scaling issues are only one part of a more general problem, namely that the role of the network architectures and protocols in the performance of distributed DBMSs is not well understood. In this paper we report our initial findings regarding the performance of a centralized and a distributed concurrency control protocol implemented on two network architectures - bus and ring - using their communication protocols - Ethernet CSMA/CD and token ring. The results indicate that there are design decisions regarding the suitability of certain network architectures and protocols for different concurrency control algorithms. © 1992 ieee.

It is widely recognized that knowledgebased systems and techniques will play an important role in the next generation of distributed operation support systems for public telecommunication network management. This paper focuses on the impact of cooperative distributed knowledge-based systems in this area. We describe an implemented testbed, called TEAM- CPS, that explores distributed cooperative architectures for customer network control. Using TEAM-CPS, we model customer and public network operations support systems as intelligent knowledge-based agents that cooperate as do teams of human experts working together on common problems. The work reported here generalizes an earlier proofof-concept approach with a new and more practical framework for building autonomous agents. This framework is defined by the layered integration of two Artificial Intelligence (AI) paradigms: Agent-Oriented programming and classical AI planning. This paper describes the application domain and this new framework along with the general AI techniques that we have developed for TEAM-CPS. A simplified customer network management problem is used throughout, and an annotated trace of a three-agent dialogue, produced in TEAM-CPS, exemplifies the type of cooperative behavior and problem solving performance that can be expected with current prototypes of TEAM-CPS. © 1992 ieee.

MOVIE (Multitasking Object-oriented Visual Interactive Environment) is the new software system for High Performance Distributed Computing (HPDC), currently in the advanced design and implementation stage at Northeast Parallel architectures Center (NPAC), Syracuse University. MOVIE System is structured as a multiserver network of interpreters of high-level object-oriented programming language MovieScript. MovieScript derives from PostScript and extends it in the C++ syntax based object-oriented interpreted style towards 3D graphics, high performance computing and general purpose high level communication protocol for distributed and MIMD-parallel computing. The present paper describes the overall open Systems based MOVIE design and itemizes currently implemented, developed and planned components of the system. © 1992 ieee.
