The concepts of virtual agents (VAs) and virtual communities (VCs) are proposed for interagent communication and cooperation based on Hewitt's `scientific community' metaphor. VAs are `images' of autonomous agents (expert decision support systems and human decision makers) dynamically created in a local agent's `mind' (or knowledge base) and linked to the remote host through attached network routines. This feature enables VAs to be defined as network domain objects which conceal the details of computer communications and provide an agent-oriented environment for perspective sharing and coordination. Using this protocol VAs can be organized into virtual communities and different social protocols may be modeled as virtual sessions in a virtual conference setting. A prototype system is developed in C and C++ using UDP/IP protocol. The basic ideas are illustrated with an application example. The major advantage of this approach lies in its utility for coordination without coercion.

In massive data communication networks, it is common to find many thousands of nodes with a wide mix of hardware, software, and communication protocol architectures. It is shown that the most promising approach to managing these networks is being standardized by ISO/IEC for open systems management. The technical feasibility, economic provisioning, and usability of OSI systems management are discussed. Two alternatives for usable network management infrastructures are presented, and their characteristics are described.< >

A testbed, called TEAM-CPS, that explores distributed cooperative architectures for customer network control is described. TEAM-CPS is used to model customer and public network operations support systems as intelligent knowledge-based agents that cooperate as do teams of human experts working together on common problems. An earlier proof-of-concept approach is generalized by the addition of a new and more practical framework for building autonomous agents. This framework is defined by the layered integration of two artificial intelligence (AI) paradigms: agent-oriented programming and classical AI planning. The application domain and this new framework are described, along with general AI techniques developed for TEAM-CPS. A simplified customer network management problem is used throughout, and an annotated trace of a three-agent dialogue, produced in TEAM-CPS, exemplifies the type of cooperative behavior and problem-solving performance that can be expected with current prototypes of TEAM-CPS.< >

Several standardization bodies have defined the logical telecommunications management network (TMN) reference model. The issues involved in transforming standard TMN reference models into real-world architectures are discussed. Some practical TMN issues, namely, the Q3 common management information service element (CMISE) specification and implementation constraints in practical TMN, including the limitations imposed on the TMN/OS applications with respect to open, vendor-independent solutions, are also discussed.< >

The authors give a detailed description of a new hybrid system for acoustic decoding. The system features cooperation between a multilayer perceptron (MLP) and an adaptive dynamic programming (DP) module. They show how to train the whole system in an optimal way using an adaptive gradient technique. The DP module optimizes cost functions inspired from k-means and learning vector quantization (LVQ). This module allows the training of synthetic references which incorporate discriminant information and improves the performance and/or speed of usual dynamic programming systems. The authors analyze and provide solutions to some problems which may occur when training the whole hybrid system and show that they are common to many modular architectures. These theoretical issues are illustrated through experiments on an isolated-word database.< >

TEMPT is a technology mapping algorithm aimed at exploring field-programmable gate array (FPGA) architectures with hard-wired connections. TEMPT maps a network of basic blocks to a netlist of hard-wired logic blocks (HLBs), in which each HLB consists of several basic hard-wire blocks connected in an arbitrary tree topology, and optimizes either speed or area. TEMPT is as effective as the Xilinx 4000 CLB mapper, PPR, when minimizing CLBs to implement a set of MCNC benchmarks. Using TEMPT it was shown empirically that many HLBs were significantly faster than FPGAs without hard-wired links. Several HLBs were demonstrated that exhibited superior logic density to the Xilinx 4000 CLB.< >

A comparison of the object model underpinning open systems interconnection (OSI) network management standards with that being developed for object-oriented software development systems indicates a close alignment between the models. But the OSI object-model goes further: it supports notions of asynchronously occurring events, concurrency, and optionality of implementation. These features are not found in the OMG object-model, but neither are they precluded. Consequently, the way is paved for network-management product suppliers to use OMG-conformant software-development systems.< >
