A reference guide is provided for the tool selection process, particularly when applied to computer architecture simulation. network II.5, Simscript II.5, and ModSim II each provide the capability for assessing computer architectures although the underlying methodology behind each tool varies. network II.5 is specifically designed for computer network simulation while Simscript II.5 and ModSim II are general-purpose simulation languages, with ModSim II supporting object-oriented programming. As a result, each has its own unique set of strengths and limitations that directly influence each model's ability to support modeling goals. The selection of a tool for a particular modeling effort is highly dependent upon these goals.

A generic queuing network model is formulated for an analytical performance evaluation of communications networks which are layered according to the OSI eference model. The proposed model, based directly on the generic specifications of the reference model, may be used to quantitatively evaluate end-to-end mean performance measures taking into account multiple layers of protocol, a multitude of open connections across the network, the underlying topology, and the manner in which the processing capacity is distributed among the various entities. For the solution of the model, a computationally efficient iterative decomposition algorithm is formulated. To justify the methodology formulated, previous work is reviewed in the area of the analysis of layered systems and the limitations of hitherto proposed performance-evaluation methodologies are exposed.

Analytic methods of bifurcation theory are used to design algorithms for determining synaptic weights in recurrent analog neural networkarchitectures. Nonnumerical formulas, as well as numerical learning algorithms using hidden units for the storage of static and periodic attractors, are introduced. These algorithms allow programming of the network vector field regardless of the patterns to be stored. Stability of patterns and cycles, basin geometry, and rates of convergence may be controlled. For a network of n nodes, n static or n/2 periodic attractors can be stored by a projection algorithm. For orthonormal patterns, this learning operation reduces to a kind of periodic outer product rule that allows local, additive, and commutative incremental learning. Standing- or traveling-wave cycles may be stored to mimic the kind of oscillating spatial patterns that appear in the neural activity of the olfactory bulb and prepyriform cortex during inspiration, and suffice, in the bulb, to predict the pattern-recognition behavior of rabbits in classical conditioning experiments. These attractors arise, during simulated inspiration, through a multiple Hopf bifurcation, which can act as a critical decision point for their selection by very small input patterns.

The evolution of data communication networks as a reaction to telecommunication regulatory relief in the USA is discussed. The NYNEX INFO-LOOK information gateway is used to illustrate trends in the evolution of the data network architecture. How this affects software development technology is also discussed. Software development environments for communication systems required a system architecture which allows for fast and efficient software development. architectures for data communication networks will be changing dramatically in the near future. This will require development environments with flexibility so they can adapt to changing networkarchitectures and information processing hardware. Such an environment is referred to as the rapid development environment (RDE), to express its capability for fast adaptation to new networkarchitectures and implementation hardware.< >

The customer network management (CNM) capabilities that are currently contemplated can be organized into configuration, fault, performance, security, and accounting management classes. These management classes are discussed, two operations architectures that could support CNM capabilities in an integrated services digital network (ISDN) environment are examined, and applicable standards activity in the area of ISDN customer network management is indicated. It is suggested that an operations architecture defined by a bearer-service-based interface to a centralized network management system may best provide network management functionality to the large corporate customer who may have a corporate network consisting of both public and private components. In addition, an architecture defined by standard signaling-based messages to very well-defined distributed operations functionality may also provide relatively simple customer network management capabilities to the small customer or the typical end-user in a large corporation (i.e. some employee other than the telecommunications manager).< >

The authors report on extended database programming support which leads quite naturally from a centralized, modular environment to distributed computing systems where modules can be spread over different nodes in a computer network. The proposed extended Modula-2-based database programming system implements a federative client/server architecture and integrates standardized communication services supporting the communication requirements of a heterogeneous network environment. The authors also report on the design and status of a prototype implementation that is currently being realized in a joint project of their corresponding institutions.

Describes the internal software architecture and illustrates how it satisfies the primary goals of rapid introduction of services, flexibility, modularity, and reliability. The authors argue that the software architecture must be complementary to rapidly changing software-based services. They conclude that the successful and timely deployment of network technologies, such as the integrated services digital network (ISDN), Intelligent network/2 (IN/2), and opennetwork Architecture (ONA), depends on how well these goals are achieved by the software architectures of the next generation switching systems.< >
