Wireless Snesor network (WSN) based systems with a focus on Internet of Things (IoT) applications generate a large amount of data. Many applications that need to process data in real time make use of microcontroller-based architectures with sequential programming. Systems based on sequential programming can emulate parallelism up to a certain number of instructions, which is not the case with Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA). The main objective of this work is to monitor a network of 40 CO2 sensors and to perform real-time sorting of all data. In addition, the run time analysis of two sorting algorithms is performed: bubble sort and insertion sort. For this purpose, an FPGA-based architecture is implemented, controlled by a finite state machine(FSM), which executes each of the sorting algorithms. The results show that the insertion sort algorithm is faster than the burbble sort, but consumes more hardware resources in the FPGA.

In this paper, a fractional-order online policy iteration (FOOPI)-based optimal control strategy is developed for a class of fractional-order nonlinear systems (FONSs). The fractional Taylor expansion and the property of Hadamard product are utilized to derive the fractional Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation, which is solved by a FOOPI method consisting of policy evaluation and policy improvement. Through constructing a critic neural network (NN), whose weight vector is adjusted by the gradient descent algorithm, the cost function and the fractional control policy are obtained approximately. Then, the state trajectories of closed-loop FONSs and the critic NN weight vector approximation error dynamics are guaranteed to be uniformly ultimately bounded. Simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the presented fractional optimal control scheme.

Spiking Neural networks (SNNs), An alternative to sigmoidal neural networks, include time into their operations using discrete signals called spikes. Employing spikes enables SNNs to mimic any feedforward sigmoidal neural network with lower power consumption. Recently a new type of SNN has been introduced for classification problems, known as Degree of Belonging SNN (DoB-SNN). DoB-SNN is a two-layer spiking neural network that shows significant potential as an alternative SNN architecture and learning algorithm. This paper introduces a new variant of Spike-Timing Dependent Plasticity (STDP), which is based on the assembly of neurons and expands the DoB-SNN's training algorithm for multilayer architectures. The new learning rule, known as assembly-based STDP, employs trained DoBs in each layer to train the next layer and build strong connections between neurons from the same assembly while creating inhibitory connections between neurons from different assemblies in two consecutive layers. The performance of the multilayer DoB-SNN is evaluated on five datasets from the UCI machine learning repository. Detailed comparisons on these datasets with other supervised learning algorithms show that the multilayer DoB-SNN can achieve better performance on 4/5 datasets and comparable performance on 5th when compared to multilayer algorithms that employ considerably more trainable parameters.

Next-generation mobile networks will largely benefit from advances in softwarization and cloudification of network functions. However, fully exploiting the new potential of flexible network architectures in front of increasingly demanding service volumes and requirements calls for an extremely effective integration of network Intelligence (NI) solutions into production infrastructures. While current standardization efforts towards embedding NI in beyond-5G and 6G systems are still in their infancy, the DAEMON project is developing technologies for a NI-native generation of mobile networks. In this paper, we present current evolutions proposed by DAEMON in terms of a general model for the representation of NI instances, which facilitates their synergic integration in network environments. We showcase the practical viability and advantages of the proposed approach with two state-of-the-art NI algorithms for vRAN orchestration implemented into an open-source data flow programming framework.

Across embedded, mobile, enterprise, and high performance computing systems, computer architectures are becoming more heterogeneous and complex. This complexity is causing a crisis in programming systems and performance portability. Several programming systems are working to address these challenges, but the increasing architectural diversity is forcing software stacks and applications to be specialized for each architecture. As we show, all of these approaches critically depend on their runtime system for discovery, execution, scheduling, and data orchestration. To address this challenge, we believe that a more agile and proactive runtime system is essential to increase performance portability and improve user productivity. To this end, we have designed and implemented IRIS: a portable runtime system exploiting multiple heterogeneous programming systems. IRIS can discover available resources, manage multiple diverse programming systems (e.g., CUDA, Hexagon, HIP, Level Zero, openCL, openMP) simultaneously in the same execution, respect data dependencies, orchestrate data movement proactively, and provide for user-configurable scheduling. Our evaluation on three architectures, ranging from Qualcomm Snapdragon to a Summit supercomputer node, shows that IRIS improves portability across a wide range of diverse heterogeneous architectures with negligible overhead.

Toward Minimum WCRT Bound for DAG Tasks Under Prioritized List Scheduling Algorithms

Many modern real-time parallel applications can be modeled as a directed acyclic graph (DAG) task. Recent studies show that the worst-case response time (WCRT) bound of a DAG task can be significantly reduced when the execution order of the vertices is determined by the priority assigned to each vertex of the DAG. How to obtain the optimal vertex priority assignment, and how far from the best-known WCRT bound of a DAG task to the minimum WCRT bound are still open problems. In this article, we aim to construct the optimal vertex priority assignment and derive the minimum WCRT bound for the DAG task. We encode the priority assignment problem into an integer linear programming (ILP) formulation. To solve the ILP model efficiently, we do not involve all variables or constraints. Instead, we solve the ILP model iteratively, i.e., we initially solve the ILP model with only a few primary variables and constraints, and then at each iteration, we increment the ILP model with the variables and constraints which are more likely to derive the optimal priority assignment. Experimental work shows that our method is capable of solving the ILP model optimally without involving too many variables or constraints, e.g., for instances with 50 vertices, we find the optimal priority assignment by involving 12.67% variables on average and within several minutes on average.

High-Level Synthesis (HLS) tools are aimed at enabling performant FPGA designs that are authored in a high-level language. While commercial HLS tools are available today, there is still a substantial performance gap between most designs developed via HLS relative to traditional, labor intensive approaches. We report on several cases where an anticipated performance improvement was either not realized or resulted in decreased performance. These include: programming paradigm choices between data parallel vs. pipelined designs;dataflow implementations;configuration parameter choices;and handling odd data set sizes. The results point to a number of improvements that are needed for HLS tool flows, including a strong need for performance modeling that can reliably guide the compilation optimization process.

Evolving systems are models which are able to act dynamically in adaptive open-loop manner for solving data stream modeling problems within different application areas. Their parametric adaptability for architectural constructions of models allows them to flexibly solve issues of the most varied natures. Data mining problems in the agriculture area are the target of recent researches, mainly through extracting the basic characteristics from images to transform them into feature data that can be processed by machine learning approaches. This work aims to address the problem of identifying dry beans with interpretable models and results. For this purpose, an evolving neuro-fuzzy network based on uni-nullneurons, capable of extracting knowledge about a data set through if-then rules, was used in this paper. The data set used in this work was the subject of several approaches in the literature, and the results obtained (reaching about 98.18% classification accuracy) prove that the evolving neuro-fuzzy network used in this paper can identify dry seed beans with a high degree of precision while allowing the interpretation and dissemination of knowledge about their correct identification.

In order to supply energy to the smart objects such as electric vehicles and smart phones using wireless power transfer (WPT) framework, the internet of things (IoT) embedded sensors and actuators can play critical roles for sensing, monitoring and regulating the WPT system states. Specifically, the smart sensors are used to transmit sensing state information to the control center, where the state estimation program runs to know the operating and health conditions of WPT system. This study proposes a Bayesian network based WPT system state estimation algorithm. This scheme can estimate the WPT system states in a distributed way using the Bayesian tree structure. Afterwards, the semidefinite programming based optimal feedback control scheme is proposed to regulate the system states. Simulations results show that the proposed approach provides significant performance improvement compared with the existing scheme.
