The CODECO Experimentation Framework is an open-source solution designed for the rapid experimentation of Kubernetes-based edge cloud deployments. It adopts a microservice-based architecture and introduces innovative abstractions for (i) the holistic deployment of Kubernetes clusters and associated applications, starting from the VM allocation level; (ii) declarative cross-layer experiment configuration; and (iii) automation features covering the entire experimental process, from the configuration up to the results visualization. We present proof-of-concept results that demonstrate the above capabilities in three distinct contexts: (i) a comparative evaluation of var-ious network fabrics across different edge-oriented Kubernetes distributions; (ii) the automated deployment of EdgeNet, which is a complex edge cloud orchestration system; and (iii) an assessment of anomaly detection (AD) workflows tailored for edge environments.

Modern programmable network hardware enables in-network computing-pushing increasingly-complex logic into the network to improve the performance, flexibility and reliability of network services. But the current network programming paradigm is constrained to programming a single network device at a time. The lack of support for in-network programs that use several and heterogeneous network hardware simultaneously constrains the scale and behaviour of in-network programs. Dataplane Disaggregation is a new paradigm that addresses this problem. It distributes computations across programmable network hardware including switches and smart NICs. This paradigm transforms a monolithic in-network program into a distributed system executing on possibly heterogeneous resources. The goal of this demo is to make an accessible presentation of Dataplane Disaggregation to the wider distributed systems community. This is intended to stimulate discussion on effective ways to program distributed and heterogeneous systems. Our demo is based on the Flightplan system prototype. Flightplan is open-source and comes with detailed documentation and support scripts, yet it requires some effort to set up and run. This impedes its study by others. Our demo runs completely in the browser and does not burden viewers with any installation effort at all. The technical contribution of this demo consists of a customised visualisation of Flightplan experiments. Moreover, the demo is well-suited to virtual events-as is being planned for ICDCS'21-since it can be run independently and asynchronously by viewers of the demo. This is especially helpful for viewers with slow or intermittent Internet connections. We make the demo's source code freely available online for use by others, including researchers who want to build similar demos.

DNN accelerators are often developed and evaluated in isolation without considering the cross-stack, system-level effects in real-world environments. This makes it difficult to appreciate the impact of System-on-Chip (SoC) resource contention, OS overheads, and programming-stack inefficiencies on overall performance/energy-efficiency. To address this challenge, we present Gemmini, an open-source(1), full-stack DNN accelerator generator. Gemmini generates a wide design-space of efficient ASIC accelerators from a flexible architectural template, together with flexible programming stacks and full SoCs with shared resources that capture system-level effects. Gemmini-generated accelerators have also been fabricated, delivering up to three orders-of-magnitude speedups over high-performance CPUs on various DNN benchmarks.

Software quality is critical in the current information age, we need to find effective modeling methods to evaluate the quality of increasingly large software. Complex network is an important tool for modelling software systems from the macro perspective, and it expresses software as a complex network by analyzing the dependencies between software components. In this paper, we propose a new model called weighted class dependency network (WCDN) based on complex network theory to describe the characteristics of object-oriented software systems. WCDN model is based on class granularity, which considers not only the difference of multiple dependencies caused by object-oriented programming languages, but also the disparity of class importance. We apply WCDN to a refactoring algorithm based on three modular metrics, and evaluate the rationality and effectiveness of the network through disturbing-recovering experiments. After the comparative experiments of 12 open-source software systems, the results prove that WCDN can represent the architecture of the object-oriented software system correctly.

In an increasingly visual world, people with blindness and low vision (pBLV) face substantial challenges in navigating their surroundings and interpreting visual information. From our previous work, VIS 4 ION is a smart wearable that helps pBLV in their daily challenges. It enables multiple microservices based on artificial intelligence (AI), such as visual scene processing, navigation, and vision-language inference. These microservices require powerful computational resources and, in some cases, stringent inference times, hence the need to offload computation to edge servers. This paper introduces a novel video streaming platform that improves the capabilities of VIS 4 ION by providing real-time support of the microservices at the network edge. When video is offloaded wirelessly to the edge, the time-varying nature of the wireless network requires adaptation strategies for a seamless video service. We demonstrate the performance of our adaptive real-time video streaming platform through experimentation with an open-source 5G deployment based on open air interface (OAI). The experiments demonstrate the ability to provide microservices robustly in time-varying network conditions.

In recent years, there has been a rise in popularity of using evolutionary algorithms (EA's) in conjunction with artificial neural networks (ANN's). This approach is commonly known as NeuroEvolution (NE). NeuroEvolutionary approaches typically optimize just the weights of an ANN or optimize the architecture, learning rates, thresholds, and weights together. Algorithms capable of the latter are known as Topological and Weight Evolving ANN (TWEANN). One such TWEANN is Gene Expression programming for Neural networks (GEPNN). This paper presents an empirical investigation of the network topologies that arise when GEPNN is used and whether evolved architectures have any relation to state of the art architectures. Results show that GEPNN naturally discovers powerful structural motifs such as shortcut connections and also creates sparse networks. Both these schemas have been shown to be advantageous in deep learning techniques. As an additional contribution from this work, we provide an open source library for developing GEPNN solutions in Python.

The stringent requirements of the latest immersive applications (i.e., 360° video, VR, AR, XR, etc.) combined with the scarcity of radio resources are challenging the service operators of the various telecommunication networks. In the recent literature, HetNets have been proposed as an alternative to overcoming these challenges. In previous work, the authors presented SVORA, an architecture for integrating different radio technologies, combining virtualized/open RAN architectures and SBA-based RAN for efficient spectrum usage. In this work, the authors upgrade the previously proposed solution to deliver immersive video efficiently. The paper presents imeNF, a new set of network Functions that support delivering high-bitrate immersive video-based applications with increased quality of service. Simulations-based testing shows how, based on imeNF, a 16k video can be sent with delays of 15 ms, while traditional D-RAN, V-RAN, and O-RAN-based approaches take more than 300 ms.

The paradigm shift towards the fifth generation of mobile networks (5G) has entailed a transition from a monolithic architecture to a completely disaggregated microservice-based architecture of network functions. This architectural renovation decouples and distributes Containerized network Functions (CNF), tailored to address the specialized requirements of the open Radio Access network (open RAN) deployment. Specifically, Kubernetes has emerged as a pivotal orchestrator for CNF within the context of disaggregated open RAN. In particular, the deployment of Operator-defined Applications (xApps) for Near Real-Time RAN Intelligent Controller (Near-RT RIC) scenarios calls for communication substrates to facilitate the communication and coordination with other RAN components, and consequently, to dial with increased dynamicity and flexibility of 5G deployments. To face these issues, we propose service mesh as a cloud-native technology extending the Kubernetes communication infrastructure. Service mesh fulfills diverse requisites of xApps running in the RAN Intelligent Controller for traffic management, instrumentation, security, and observability, inherently facilitating a zero-trust architecture through the incorporation of sidecar proxies co-located with microservices. Moreover, we evaluate the performances of another emerging paradigm, raising as a lightweight solution that allows a more incremental adoption compared to service mesh, represented by ambient mesh. This paper analyses service and ambient mesh for deploying xApps in a state-of-the-art Near-RT RIC, i.e., the O-RAN SC implementation, evaluating both qualitative and quantitative attributes.

An Internet of Things (IoT) architecture describes a network of (physical) objects exchanging data over the Internet. In complex IoT deployments, as those typical of Industry 4.0 systems, this architecture comprises four different layers: device, edge, fog, and cloud. Moreover, the composition and computation tasks assigned to each layer may dynamically evolve due to environmental changes. As such, modeling IoT architectures is a complex process that must cover as well the specification of self-adaptation rules to ensure the optimized execution of the IoT system. To facilitate this task, we propose a new IoT Domain-Specific Language (DSL) covering both the static and dynamic aspects of an IoT deployment. The definition of the DSL, its projectional-based editor and a first prototype of a Kubernetes manifest generator are available as open source software.

In order to effectively solve the problems of voltage crossing, line overloading and bidirectional flow of distribution network caused by new energy photovoltaic (PV) connected to the distribution network, a distribution network optimization method based on the coordination of demand response (DR) and smart soft-open switch (SOP) with energy storage is proposed. Firstly, the DR and SOP distribution network optimization model is constructed based on energy storage, and the multi-temporal optimization model is constructed after PV is connected to the distribution network with the optimization objective function of maximizing the power of new energy PVs, minimizing the loss of SOPs, and minimizing the cost of ESS operation and maintenance. Then, the second-order cone optimization algorithm is used to solve the problem with the CPLEX solver. Finally, Simulations on the ieee33 bus system show that the method enhances voltage quality, reduces peak-to-valley load differences, and improves PV accommodation capacity, ensuring network security.
