The beyond-diagonal reconfigurable intelligent surface (BD-RIS) represents the next advancement in reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), offering enhanced flexibility by supporting multiple modes and architectures. This study examines the spectral efficiency (SE) of a single-cell RSMA-based multi-user MIMO system assisted by two sector BD-RIS. The scattering matrix of BD-RIS and the power allocation between common and private precoders primarily determine the SE. We employ a two-step optimization process to determine these parameters. First, the scattering matrix is optimized by maximizing the total channel gain of the user equipment (UEs). Using the optimized scattering matrix, the power allocation for the common and private streams is then calculated by maximizing the SE of the system through a fractional programming technique, which gives a closed-form solution. The SE is computed using the optimized parameters and is numerically plotted to evaluate the performance of the system. The system is extensively analyzed across various precoding techniques, numbers of UEs, and BD-RIS elements, and is also compared to space division multiple access (SDMA). Numerical results show that BD-RIS outperforms both the traditional RIS and the scenario without RIS.

This paper introduces Text2Net, an innovative system designed to transform plain English descriptions into dynamic, interactive network simulations within the Emulator Virtual Engine–Next Generation (Eve-NG) environment. By integrating SOTA technologies from Natural Language Processing (NLP), Large Language Models (LLMs), and proposed adaptor software, Text2Net bridges the technical knowledge gap, enabling both technical and non-technical users to effortlessly create and interact with complex network topologies within a simulation environment. The system architecture combines an intuitive chat interface, GPT4 LLM to interpret user inputs, NLP key-value extraction, a simulation adaptor, and the EVE-NG engine. Communities of various specialists are using public groups on platforms like Telegram or Slack to discuss specific domain-oriented topics, for instance, Python programming language, Clickhouse database management system or even film making peculiarities. Conversations in such chats often have a form of questions and answers: someone is looking for information, and someone is giving answers. Both sides working to create a community-driven knowledge source. In a group chat, several parallel discussions on different topics can be held simultaneously, which leads to mixing messages up between dialogues and makes it difficult to get individual dialogues from the chat. In this paper, we consider the problem of data preprocessing for the automatic formation of QA-pairs and QAT-triplets from dialogues of group QA-chats that may be used to exploit information and knowledge stored in conversations. Therefore, to deal with this problem we formulate a set of related tasks and consider approaches to solve them. In particular, we highlight two of the most important tasks: identification of the start of new discussions and classification of mixed-up messages to dialogues they belong to. We perform a comparative study of proposed methods on three large groups from Telegram messenger representing user communities that have variations in communication style and patterns, moderation aspects and topics. The experiments allow us to highlight the influence of these variations on the performance of the proposed methods for the tasks and find the best alternatives among them.

As Edge deployments move closer towards the end devices, low latency communication among Edge aware applications is one of the key tenants of Edge service offerings. In order to simplify application development, service mesh architectures have emerged as the evolutionary architectural paradigms for taking care of bulk of application communication logic such as health checks, circuit breaking, secure communication, resiliency (among others), thereby decoupling application logic with communication infrastructure. The latency to throughput ratio needs to be measurable for high performant deployments at the Edge. Providing benchmark data for various edge deployments with Bare Metal and virtual machine-based scenarios, this paper digs into architectural complexities of deploying service mesh at edge environment, performance impact across north-south and east-west communications in and out of a service mesh leveraging popular open-source service mesh Istio/Envoy using a simple on-prem Kubernetes cluster. The performance results shared indicate performance impact of Kubernetes network stack with Envoy data plane. Microarchitecture analyses indicate bottlenecks in Linux based stacks from a CPU microarchitecture perspective and quantify the high impact of Linux's Iptables rule matching at scale. We conclude with the challenges in multiple areas of profiling and benchmarking requirement and a call to action for deploying a service mesh, in latency sensitive environments at Edge.

This paper addresses load balancing in open radio access networks (O-RAN), which aims to enhance network avail-ability without overloading the network when accommodating new user equipment (UEs) while ensuring an efficient allocation of resources to meet the data rate requirement of existing UEs. More precisely, we propose a resource allocation framework that balances the utilization of resource blocks (PRBs) at the radio units (RU s) as well as the computational resources at the distributed units (DUs) while maintaining the quality of service (QoS) demands of UEs. Given the combinatorial nature of the optimization problems, we propose, 1) a supermodular algorithm to find UE-RU assignments and 2) a job scheduling-inspired method to assign RUs to respective DUs. Through comprehensive simulations, we validate the effectiveness of our approach by showcasing substantial enhancements in the network load con-ditions and highlighting the superiority of the provided resource allocation scheme in terms of key performance indicators such as the call block ratio (CBR).

College students in low and middle-income countries enter undergraduate STEM programs under-prepared, with little or no prior knowledge about their chosen fields. One reasons for this is non-availability of cost effective equipment in most schools for conducting experiments to bridge the gap between theory and practical skills. LearnOBots is a startup out of the National University of Sciences and Technology at Islamabad, Pakistan, that is focusing on solving this problem. Inspired by the global Maker movement, it has developed hardware kits and lessons that have practically introduced thousands of high-school and freshmen college age learners to computer programming, robotics and embedded system design. This was achieved by conducting summer camps, winter camps, weekend camps and Maker days over the past six years that go beyond slideshows and lectures. We describe LearnOBots CODI Bot kit along with six projects that teach learners fundamentals of robotics, programming and practical problem solving. To assess the effectiveness of the developed material we conducted pre- and post-surveys with participants as well as focus groups with learners, parents and teachers. Survey and focus group results showed that after just eight lessons students demonstrated markedly improved technical/digital literacy skills and grater enthusiasm for STEM careers.

Thanks to technologies such as virtual network function the Fifth Generation (5G) of mobile networks dynamically allocate resources to different types of users in an on-demand fashion. Virtualization extends up to the 5G core, where software-defined networks and network slicing implement a customizable environment. These technologies can be controlled via application programming interfaces and web technologies, inheriting hence their security risks and settings. An attacker exploiting vulnerable implementations of the 5G core may gain privileged control of the network assets and disrupt its availability. However, there is currently no security assessment of the web security of the 5G core network. In this paper, we present the first security assessment of the 5G core from a web security perspective. We use the STRIDE threat modeling approach to define a complete list of possible threat vectors and associated attacks. Thanks to a suite of security testing tools, we cover all of these threats and test the security of the 5G core. In particular, we test the three most relevant open-source 5G core implementations, i.e., open5GS, Free5Gc, and openAir Interface. Our analysis shows that all these cores are vulnerable to at least two of our identified attack vectors, demanding increased security measures in the development of future 5G core networks.

In the evolving landscape of many-core architectures, the network on Chip (NoC) emerges as a pivotal inter-connection framework, accommodating the escalating number of cores on a single chip. Despite its widespread adoption, power consumption remains a critical challenge, significantly influenced by factors such as topology, bit toggling, and routing algorithms, with bit-switching power being a predominant concern. In this work, we have proposed an innovative technique in the cores aimed at reducing the power consumption of the NoC. To calculate our method's area, time, and power consumption, we have synthesized it on a Xilinx Virtex-7 FPGA board. We have modified the Noxim open-source simulator to validate our approach using synthetic traffic. Empirical results demonstrate a 29.64% reduction in dynamic power consumption and a 29.09% improvement in switching activity for the average case (Mode 1) traffic scenario.

Pistachios are highly valued for their flavor, nutrition, and health benefits, with distinct varieties cultivated worldwide. However, accurately distinguishing between visually similar types such as Kirmizi and Siirt pistachios can be challenging. Misclassification can lead to market pricing errors, financial losses, and quality control issues. This study proposes the deep learning techniques through Python programming to overcome human perception limitations and develop a reliable method for distinguishing between Kirmizi and Siirt pistachios based on visual characteristics. There are 3046 augmented data used and evenly categorized into two classifications. These were utilized in creating the three convolutional neural network (CNN) models with varying architectures. Model 3 achieved the highest performance, achieving hold-out accuracy of 96.05%. The researchers recommend expanding the dataset size, including more pistachio varieties, and exploring other classifications to further improve the model's performance and applicability.

Sensory data generated around us in the context of IoT is huge and heterogeneous. To fully unleash the potential of IoT open Data there is a need for service infrastructures that facilitate the interaction of users with such data, especially when they are able to customize such services to fit their needs. In this paper we propose to use our tool SenSquare for IoT End-User Service Composition, by presenting its main features and its recent advances towards providing a data historian and importing other services, as well as evaluating the performance of its implementation in parallel.
