Automation and autonomy of onboard tasks using space robotics technologies have been studied actively in recent years for reducing crew tasks in the International Space Station (ISS). Due to the difficulties of repairing space robots in orbit, prior verification tests on ground are essential to ensure that the robots perform required tasks in space environment without any problems. However, it is difficult to completely reproduce microgravity environment on ground in prior verification tests, and therefore several verification tests in different conditions are needed. An appropriate strategy to select and conduct the tests in suitable approach for each verification items is required to comprehensively evaluate the validity of the all functions. Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) is developing a freeflying robot named Int-Ball2 capable of performing photography tasks instead of crews in the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM). This robot has an ability to maneuver autonomously toward a target position for capturing images and videos. This paper presents a strategy of ground verification tests for the robot, which allows to validate the required functions comprehensively and efficiently. In particular, as a practical example, we introduce actually performed ground tests in Int-Ball2 project. The proposed validation policies are not limited to IntBall2, but can be widely applied as a ground verification process for general free-flying space robots.

Continuous advances in soft robotic technologies have promoted the feasibility of exploration of complex environments and terrains. One prominent example is the class of tip-everting "vine" robots, which have enabled a new set of real-world applications. Vine robots navigate their environment through growth and have recently been used in practice for in-pipe inspection, maintenance, and exploration. While locomotion through these directed cylindrical systems is simplified by a vine robot's growth, there are challenges with navigation. In complex pipe networks with many junctions, one question is how a vine can navigate around its own body during exploration. For example, a vine may navigate a pipe network that forces the robot to traverse a section of a pipe it already traversed in the opposite direction. This work presents an experimental approach to investigating and characterizing the interaction of a vine with its own body inside of a pipe T-junction. The results of this work provide initial design recommendations for facilitating the successful navigation of a vine robot in a T-junction.

A Systematic Review on Hand Exoskeletons From the Mechatronics Aspect

Hand exoskeletons have attracted considerable attention due to their potential to rehabilitate, assist, and enhance human hand movements. However, there is currently no literature that comprehensively outlines the development roadmap of the hand exoskeletons. To better understand and explore the current research landscape and development trends in this field, this article presents a systematic review of hand exoskeletons research from a mechatronics perspective. This systematic review consolidates and critically evaluates the current state of research on hand exoskeletons, focusing on mechanical methodologies, perception systems, interaction strategies, and practical applications. The review highlights key mechanical methodologies, contrasting rigid, flexible, and soft exoskeleton approaches, and examines the ergonomic and actuation considerations crucial for user comfort and functionality. It also evaluates perception systems, such as mechanical sensing, bioelectric sensing, and motion intention recognition, for their roles in capturing user intent and providing real-time feedback. Interaction strategies are discussed, with an emphasis on both passive and active interaction control methods that enhance the intuitiveness and precision of user interaction. practical applications are explored, including the use of hand exoskeletons in medical rehabilitation, assistive technologies for individuals with disabilities, and haptic feedback for virtual reality and teleoperation. Finally, future research directions, including embodied design, embodied perception, and embodied interaction, are discussed in detail. Overall, this systematic review, from a mechatronics standpoint, underscores the transformative potential of hand exoskeletons across various fields and provides a roadmap for future innovations and research.

As the digital transformation of the manufacturing industry accelerates, the importance of data integration in manufacturing processes is increasingly emphasized. However, the use of heterogeneous equipment and diverse solutions in building processes hinders smooth data exchange, resulting in compatibility issues among equipment, systems, and data. To address these challenges, the Reference Architecture Model Industry 4.0 (RAMI 4.0) has been proposed as a reference model for Industry 4.0, utilizing the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) to ensure both vertical and horizontal interoperability. In this study, a robot manipulator was modeled using AAS, and the OPC UA protocol was applied to the modeled process elements. Additionally, a digital twin of the robot manipulator was built using MoveIt2 from higher-level systems, allowing for parameter-based control. This facilitates scenario-based integration with heterogeneous equipment such as PLCs, enabling the design of a flexible robot production system that can adapt to the tasks of heterogeneous equipment without human intervention. © 2024 ieee.

With the aim of revolutionizing various industries, the field of Swarm robotics (SRs) continuously offers efficient solutions to complex tasks. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements and emerging trends in SR, with a specific focus on the coordination and control of Swarm Aerial robots (SARs). It examines the key features and characteristics of SR, its integration with swarm intelligence, and fundamental algorithms such as Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), Genetic Algorithm (GA), and Differential Evolution (DE). The paper also discusses various swarm control techniques, infrastructure requirements, and challenges associated with implementing SR in Aerial robots. Additionally, the paper outlines future research directions, emphasizing the need for robust, energy-efficient, adaptive algorithms and ethical considerations in deploying autonomous Aerial robot swarms. This study aims to provide a solid foundation for researchers and practitioners, paving the way for future advancements and interdisciplinary collaboration in this promising field.

In this paper, we are focusing on the use of agent-based approach to generate simulations of various scenarios for border crossing points and making technology acceptance predictions. This paper is related to the Horizon 2020 project METICOS1, for which we are extracting user (traveler and border control staff) perceptions from sources such as online social networks e.g., Twitter, Web, Interviews, Questionnaires etc. However, for the scope of this paper we have only included the synthetic data for the experiments to validate the proposed simulation model. The existing studies made a strong justification for choosing this approach to model the defined problem. To the best of our knowledge, this paper is a first research study focusing on defining how agent-based modeling and simulation can be used to model border crossing scenarios and predicting the acceptance of the border control technologies by explaining travelers' profile based on synthetic data, perceptions based on manual rules. This is important for stakeholders who take decisions related to what technologies to place at the border crossing points and what features such technologies should have to improve throughputs and traveler and border staff satisfaction.

This work presents a compact Complementary Dual Split Ring Resonator (CDSRR) based microstrip patch antenna for sensing application. The antenna substrate is made using 3D Printer where the substrate material is PLA (Polylactic acid) of dielectric constant 3.47 and loss tangent 0.073. A novel omega shape channel is incorporated within the substrate to feed the sensing liquid to the antenna sensor. The patch and ground of the antenna is designed on a copper tape and placed on the substrate. A CDSRR slot is cut on the radiating patch of the proposed antenna to make the antenna resonates around 2.4 GHz which is a ISM band. The antenna resonates in various frequencies by the changing of microfluid inserted into the channel. In this way it senses the microfluid. The proposed design boasts a remarkably compact liquid volume requirement, yet delivers exceptional sensitivity. Following fabrication and rigorous testing of a prototype, commendable alignment is observed between the extracted data and the reference values. This outcome underscores the efficacy and reliability of the design, affirming its potential for practical implementation in diverse applications requiring precise liquid measurement and sensitivity.

This paper explores the evolving landscape of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) compliance within the context of AI-based mHealth devices, focusing on anticipated challenges in 2024. It examines the current state of HIPAA compliance in AI-driven mHealth, identifying potential vulnerabilities and gaps among mHealth devices in considering privacy and security. The study outlines key security and privacy considerations specific to AI-powered mHealth technologies, emphasizing risks such as data breaches, ransomware attack and unauthorized access. The paper concludes by highlighting the importance of continual adaptation to the dynamic nature of AI technologies and offers insights for stakeholders to navigate the regulatory landscape and ensure the responsible deployment of AI in healthcare.

This paper presents the APRIS robot Challenge, a Collaborative Online Interdisciplinary and International Learning (COIIL) initiative focusing on quadcopter control to promote cross-disciplinary and global collaboration among students. By integrating students from diverse fields such as software, electrical, and mechanical engineering, the program aims to enhance international communication and problemsolving skills through practical, team-based projects. Utilizing design thinking and the Scrum framework, participants develop unique quadcopter applications, supported by model-driven development, simulation tools, and distributed development techniques to ensure effective remote collaboration. Our analysis covers the program's evolution over four years, outcomes, and insights into fostering international cooperation and technical expertise. This study underscores the significance of interdisciplinary education and the potential of virtual collaborative platforms to prepare students for global challenges.
