In this paper, we propose a novel framework to exploit and utilize the shared information inner RGB-D data for efficient depth map compression. Two main codecs, designed based on the existing end-to-end image compression network, are adopted for RGB image compression and enhanced depth image compression with RGB-to-Depth structure prior, respectively. In particular, we propose a Structure Prior Fusion (SPF) module to extract the structure information from both RGB and depth codecs at multi-scale feature levels and fuse the cross-modal feature to generate more efficient structure priors for depth compression. Extensive experiments show that the proposed framework can achieve competitive rate-distortion performance as well as RGB-D task-specific performance at depth map compression compared with the direct compression scheme.

The emergence of automatic navigation systems brought an exponential increase in location data transmitted by vehicles to cloud services, which opens the door to optimizing storage and reducing communication of this data. In addition, location data and trajectories are often overlapping in many cases, such as navigation, fleet management, and logistics. Utilizing the collected data from many vehicles can contribute for location data compression sent from the vehicle to the service, but such data is held by the service side and transmitting it to the vehicle is inefficient in bandwidth and storage. As such, it would be advantageous if the vehicle could be made aware of common patterns of location-based trajectories in order to efficiently compress its location transmissions to the service or even mute while the expected trajectory keeps an acceptable error. We propose SaveDat - a Spatio-temporal Trajectory compression solution that discerns route patterns from location data at the service side and shares those patterns with vehicles in order to fit actual trajectories without sending location data or compressing *** present a compression ratio of up to 100:1 in typical scenarios.

Embedded computing is a sector in strong growth, driven by the increasing offer in the internet of things. Since position information is typically one of the intrinsic features of a sensory platform, the present work considers and analyzes the embedded lossless compression of localization data. A structural data scheme is proposed based on the number of occurrences of the independent coordinate components, named as mu JSON. It is shown that, when considering a low-level language implementation on an embedded processor acquiring GNSS data, the proposed schema implies lower compression rates than its counterparts. An embedded test-bench platform is assembled, and several real case scenarios are considered for effectiveness and validation purposes.

Massive amounts of data are generated every second by businesses, organisations, and people using computers, mobile devices, cloud computing, the Internet of Things, etc. due to the quick rise of the digital age, the explosive advancement of information technology, and the familiarisation of Internet. But fewer compression strategies are proposed in comparison to the development of digital communication and the enormous volume of data. The Traditional Number System (TDS), which includes binary, octal, and hexadecimal, has been a crucial component of computing since the beginning. However, in addition to the TDS, or traditional number system, there are a few other number systems that, while they may not be as well-known or utilised in computing, have some appealing qualities and a genuine mathematical distinction in their favour. The numbers in the strange number system (SNS) are different from the numbers in the conventional number system. Unary, ternary, Nonary, unodecimal, vigesimal, sexagesimal, hexapentabicentimal, etc. are a few examples of weird numbers. In this article, we suggest a new and improved method of text compression for general text utilising the hexapentabicentimal number system. © 2023 ieee.

Light field imaging enables post-capture actions such as refocusing and changing view perspective by capturing both spatial and angular information. However, capturing richer information of the 3D scene results in a huge amount of data. To improve the compression efficiency of the existing light field compression methods, we investigate the impact of light field super-resolution approaches (both spatial and angular super-resolution) on the compression efficiency. To this end, firstly, we downscale light field images over (i) spatial resolution, (ii) angular resolution, and (iii) spatial-angular resolution and encode them using Versatile Video Coding (VVC). We then apply a set of light field super-resolution deep neural networks to reconstruct light field images in their full spatial-angular resolution and compare their compression efficiency. Experimental results show that encoding the low angular resolution light field image and applying angular super-resolution yield bitrate savings of 51.16% and 53.41% to maintain the same PSNR and SSIM, respectively, compared to encoding the light field image in high-resolution.

Today's scientific applications and advanced instruments are producing extremely large volumes of data everyday, so that error-controlled lossy compression has become a critical technique to the scientific data storage and management. Existing lossy scientific data compressors, however, are designed mainly based on error-control driven mechanism, which cannot be efficiently applied in the fixed-ratio use-case, where a desired compression ratio needs to be reached because of the restricted data processing/management resources such as limited memory/storage capacity and network bandwidth. To address this gap, we propose a low-cost compressor-agnostic feature-driven fixed-ratio lossy compression framework (FXRZ). The key contributions are three-fold. (1) We perform an in-depth analysis of the correlation between diverse data features and compression ratios based on a wide range of application datasets, which is a fundamental work for our framework. (2) We propose a series of optimization strategies that can enable the framework to reach a fairly high accuracy in identifying the expected error configuration with very low computational cost. (3) We comprehensively evaluate our framework using 4 state-of-the-art error-controlled lossy compressors on 10 different snapshots and simulation configuration-based real-world scientific datasets from 4 different applications across different domains. Our experiment shows that FXRZ outperforms the state-of-the-art related work by 108×. The experiments with 4,096 cores on a supercomputer show a performance gain of 1.18∼8.71× than the related work in overall parallel data dumping. © 2023 ieee.

Transformer models like BERT have significantly improved performance on many NLP tasks, e.g., sentiment analysis. However, their large number of parameters makes real-world applications difficult because of computational costs and latency. Many compression methods have been proposed to solve this problem using quantization, weight pruning, and knowledge distillation. In this work, we explore some of these task-specific and task-agnostic methods by comparing their effectiveness and quality on the MultiEmo sentiment analysis dataset. Additionally, we analyze their ability to generalize and capture sentiment features by conducting domain-sentiment experiments. The results show that the compression methods reduce the model size by 8.6 times and the inference time by 6.9 times compared to the original model while maintaining unimpaired quality. Smaller models perform better on tasks with fewer data and retain more remarkable generalization ability after fine-tuning because they are less prone to overfitting. The best trade-off is obtained using the task-agnostic XtremeDistil model.

Memory constraint of always-on devices is one of the major concerns when deploying speech processing models on these devices. While larger models trained with sufficiently large amount of data generally perform better, making them fit in the device memory is a demanding challenge. In this paper, we aim to reduce model size by reparameterizing model weights across Transformer encoder layers and assuming a special weight composition and structure. More specifically, inspired by ResNet [1] and the more recent LoRA [2] work, we propose an approach named ResidualTransformer, where each weight matrix in a Transformer layer comprises 1) a shared full-rank component with its adjacent layers, and 2) a unique low-rank component to itself. The low-rank matrices only account for a small amount of model size increase. In addition, we add diagonal weight matrices to improve modeling capacity of the low-rank matrices. Experiments of our 10k-hour speech recognition and speech translation tasks show that the Transformer encoder size can be reduced by similar to 3x with very slight performance degradation.

The compression of channel state information (CSI) using deep neural networks (DNNs) is emerging as an important approach for future wireless communication systems. However, training such models typically requires a large dataset of high-dimensional channel measurements, which are very difficult and expensive to obtain. This paper introduces a novel method for generating synthetic wireless channel data using diffusion models to produce user-specific channels that accurately reflect real-world wireless environments. Our approach employs a conditional denoising diffusion implicit models (cDDIM) framework, effectively capturing the relationship between user location and multi-antenna channel characteristics. We generate synthetic high-fidelity channel samples using user positions as conditional inputs, creating larger augmented datasets to overcome measurement scarcity. Our approach significantly improves over prior methods, such as adding noise or using generative adversarial networks (GANs), especially in scenarios with limited initial measurements. For example, we can reduce the required amount of training data by 100× while maintaining nearly the same normalized mean squared error (NMSE) for CSI compression. © 2024 ieee.

The scenario approach is a technique for data-driven decision making that has found application in a variety of fields including systems and control design. Although initially conceived in the context of worst-case optimization, the scenario approach has progressively evolved into a general methodology that allows one to keep control on the risk of solutions designed from data according to complex decision processes. In a recent contribution, the theory of compression schemes (a paradigm that plays a fundamental role in statistical learning theory) has been deeply revisited in the wake of the scenario approach, which has led to unprecedentedly sharp generalization and risk quantification results. In this paper, we build on these achievements to gain insight on a classification paradigm called Guaranteed Error Machine (GEM). First, by leveraging the theory of reproducing kernels Hilbert spaces, we introduce a new, more flexible, GEM algorithm, which allows for complex classification geometries. The proposed scheme is then shown to fit into the new compression theory, from which new sharp results for the probability of GEM misclassification are derived in a distribution-free context.
