Many distributed applications implement complex data flows and need a flexible mechanism for routing data between producers and consumers. Recent advances in programmable network interface cards, or SmartNICs, represent an opportunity to offload data-flow tasks into the network fabric, thereby freeing the hosts to perform other work. System architects in this space face multiple questions about the best way to leverage SmartNICs as processing elements in data flows. In this paper, we advocate the use of Apache Arrow as a foundation for implementing dataflow tasks on SmartNICs. We report on our experiences adapting a partitioning algorithm for particle data to Apache Arrow and measure the on-card processing performance for the BlueField-2 SmartNIC. Our experiments confirm that the BlueField-2's (de)compression hardware can have a significant impact on in-transit workflows where data must be unpacked, processed, and repacked.

Smart wearables, known as emerging paradigms for vital big data capturing, have been attracting intensive attention. However, one crucial problem is their powerhungriness, i.e., the continuous data streaming consumes energy dramatically and requires devices to be frequently charged. In this study, targeting this obstacle, we propose to investigate the biodynamic patterns in the data, and design a data-driven approach for intelligent data compression. We leverage deep learning, more specifically, Convolutional Autoencoder (CAE), to learn a sparse representation of the vital big data, thereby minimizing the power consumption of the communication module - the most power-hungry module in the wearable. The minimized energy need, even taking into consideration the CAE-induced overhead, is tremendously lower than the original energy need. Further, compared with state-of-the-art wavelet compression-based method, our method can compress the data with a dramatically lower error for a similar energy budget. Our experiments and the validated approach, are expected to boost the energy efficiency of wearables, and thus greatly advance ubiquitous big data applications in the era of smart health.

In the modern era, data gains lots of importance day by day, and data has become a valuable asset for any organization. data protection from any unauthorized access gains much importance in this regard. Many techniques have been adopted to secure data for various situations, like encryption, Blockchain and Stenography. Among these, Text steganography is a technique that allows for the concealment of secret messages within the cover text. Various researchers have indicated some common issues of steganography like limited capacity, imperceptibility and robustness. In this article, we proposed a novel text steganography technique that utilizes font color changes after data compression to conceal secret messages. This approach is based on the idea of embedding the hidden message into the RGB font color after compression. This provides an added level of security and makes it more difficult for an attacker to detect the hidden message. We evaluated the proposed technique and found its effectiveness in terms of high embedding capacity, good imperceptibility, and robustness against various steganalysis methods. © 2023 ieee.

A path in a graph is a walk from one vertex to the other via edges. Many tasks for graph analytics may produce numerous paths, which record critical intermediate information or results. On the platform of Alibaba Cloud, a transaction (e.g., user purchase and money transfer) usually involves network communication via multiple servers. The server communication history is recorded as a path, where each vertex is an IP address. It is of significance to record such paths in Alibaba Cloud for daily maintenance tasks, such as anomaly server detection and network routing optimization. Motivated by the considerable data scale of IP paths, this paper proposes a compression method Overlap-Free Frequent Subpath (OFFS) to reduce the overall size. Meanwhile, the compressed paths should allow retrievals of any individual path, which is required by applications in our scenarios. We build a lookup table to match a series of frequent common subpaths to supernodes. Each path is shortened by replacing subpaths with corresponding supernodes in the table. We adopt a bottom-up framework to construct the lookup table in given iterations. Several optimizations are proposed to improve the compression ratio and speed. We conduct extensive experiments to show our effectiveness and efficiency based on several real datasets from Alibaba Cloud. © 2023 ieee.

Chest compressions are essential for CPR and the quality of it can be evaluated in terms of physical parameters: force, frequency, or physiological parameters: mean arterial pressure (MAP). In this study, an animal model was finished for CPR experiment. The data of the force of manual chest compression and the arterial blood pressure of animals were collected during the experiment, and the force, frequency, MAP and pulse pressure (PP) of manual chest compression were obtained through data processing. In this study, linear fitting was used to solve the linear relationship between force-MAP, frequency-MAP, force-PP and frequency-PP. The relationship between frequency-force-MAP and the relationship of frequency-force-PP was constructed and predicted by the method of RBF and LSTM. As the results showed that the best linear fitting results are frequency-MAP (R-square = 0.58, RMSE = 9.51) and frequency-PP (R-square = 0.62, RMSE = 9.00), and the best prediction results are the PP prediction using the method of RBF (R-square = 0.80, RMSE = 5.73). The method of LSTM got the best result to predict MAP (R-square = 0.74, RMSE = 5.80). © 2023 ieee.

In this paper, a new predictive wavelet transform (PWT) is proposed to solve LiDAR point clouds attribute compression. Our method is a combination of predictive coding and Haar wavelet transform. Based on the spatial information, a hierarchical predictive transform tree is designed to represent 3D irregular data points efficiently. Each level node is classified as a predictive node (P-node) or a transform node (T-node) according to the distances to its adjacent nodes. Then in a top-down coding process, the Haar transform is applied to all T-node pairs, and predictive coding is processed on all P-nodes alternately. It is shown by experimental results that the proposed PWT method offers better R-D performances compared with state-of-the-art methods.

In traffic application scenarios such as real-time trajectory mining and prediction, the transmission and storage of large-scale original trajectory data engulf vehicular networks in terms of wireless transmission and time overhead, as well as easy leakage of users' sensitive location information. A novel trajectory data compression framework using fuzzy sets is proposed, which makes use of the computing and storage capabilities of vehicles and edge gateways. In our methods, raw trajectory data are compressed into fuzzy strings and then further compressed using coding techniques. Our scheme not only reduces the amount of data transmission but also protects users' location/trajectory privacy. Extensive evaluations based on real-world trajectory data sets show that our framework outperforms other baselines in terms of compression ratio, delay and information loss.

Contemporary data-systems empowering the daily human activity are routinely represented with graphs. During the last decade, the volume growth of such systems has been unprecedented. This hinders the timely analysis of the formed networks due to existing physical memory limitations and significant I/O overheads. Graph compression techniques have managed to reduce memory requirements and allow for representing such networks using a few bits-per-edge. Respective approaches offer succinct mappings for social, biological, and information networks while allowing for the efficient access of sought graph elements. Despite their success, such methods mostly focus on static graphs, and predominantly offer access to either a snapshot or an aggregated view of a network. In reality however, networks change over time and, in many instances, we are interested in capturing and studying this evolution. In this paper we propose a framework for compressing emerging temporal graphs based on a dual-representation which articulates both network structure and corresponding temporal information. We empirically establish properties exhibited by community-networks regarding their time aspect(s) and harness these features in our proposed representation. Our experimental evaluation demonstrates that our approach for compressing temporal graphs readily outperforms competing techniques, attaining compression ratios that are on average around 60% of the space required by state-of-theart techniques. Moreover, our memory-efficient representation yields more than 70% faster graph compression and orders of magnitude quicker retrieval of graphs' elements, especially when it comes to large-scale networks. Finally, our framework is the first effort we are aware of, that considers actual time instead of time steps. This helps us attain better control for the size of our representation and reap further memory savings.

Video compression standards such as HEVC/H.265 and VVC/ H.266 have a hybrid coding framework consisting of various modules, including in-loop filters (ILFs), to reduce data size while maintaining video quality. However, the default ILFs in these standards have limitations and may not adapt well to complex natural videos. This review paper explores the use of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) to enhance the performance of ILFs in video compression. CNN-based ILFs are categorized based on their position: replacing default ILFs, placed after existing ILFs, or inserted between default ILFs. They are also categorized by training setups: QP combined and separate models, frame combined and separated models, and channel combined and separated models. The paper provides a comparative analysis of recent CNN-based ILFs regarding their extra inputs, trained channels, Y/BD rate (PSNR), encoding/decoding time, and other metrics, including subjective quality analysis and complexity analysis. The reviewed CNN-based ILFs offer promising results in terms of video compression efficiency and quality enhancement, demonstrating the potential for further advancements in this field. However, there are still challenges to address, including the trade-off between compression efficiency and complexity, the integration of multiple deep tools, and more. This research highlights the importance of CNN-based ILFs in improving video compression standards and their potential for future developments in video coding. © 2024 ieee.

This paper introduces the Indexed Quad-Tree Summary (IQTS) algorithm, along with its concepts, models, and 'philosophy'. IQTS allows us to compress multidimensional OLAP views derived from big OLAP data cubes that populate Mobile Clouds. In addition to this, IQTS effectively and efficiently supports approximate query answering over compressed multidimensional OLAP views. These functionalities turn to be enabling functionalities for big data applications in a wide collection of modern scenarios, such as healthcare analytics. In light of these considerations, this paper provides motivations, anatomy and procedures of IQTS, enriched by several case studies that contribute to pinpoint the benefits coming from our proposed algorithm. © 2023 ieee.
