Explainable AI (XAI) for lay users who do not have expertise in Reinforcement Learning (non-RL experts) plays an essential role in helping them build mental models of an agent's behavior in increasingly common applications, such as self-driving cars. An intriguing approach involves utilizing the "' familiarization effect" ', where exposure to an agent's behavior across various scenarios assists users in naturally forming these mental models. However, this method might be less effective when dealing with multiple agents or complex, lengthy tasks, due to the limitations of human short-term visual memory where holding visual information briefly in mind. We propose that visualizing abstracted trajectories, which illustrate transitions between major states of the RL agents, can aid non-RL experts in understanding the agents' behaviors. Preliminary findings suggest that this visualization enables non-RL experts to efficiently recognize RL agents' behaviors.

In reinforcement learning, tuning reward weights in the reward function is necessary to align behavior with user preferences. However, current approaches, which use pairwise comparisons for preference elicitation, are inefficient, because they miss much of the human ability to explore and judge groups of candidate solutions. The paper presents a novel visualization-based approach that better exploits the user's ability to quickly recognize interesting directions for reward tuning. It breaks down the tuning problem by using the visual information-seeking principle: overview first, zoom and filter, then details-on-demand. Following this principle, we built a visualization system comprising two interactively linked views: 1) an embedding view showing a contextual overview of all sampled behaviors and 2) a sample view displaying selected behaviors and visualizations of the detailed time-series data. A user can efficiently explore large sets of samples by iterating between these two views. The paper demonstrates that the proposed approach is capable of tuning rewards for challenging behaviors. The simulation-based evaluation shows that the system can reach optimal solutions with fewer queries relative to baselines.

Despite the availability of hotel booking platforms with customer reviews, selecting the best hotel or accommodation can still be difficult. This is partly because it is hard to directly contrast multiple shortlisted hotels. We propose a new visual interface, called ViSCitR, that goes beyond existing solutions in visually comparing ratings and personalizing the evaluation based on individual priorities. Targeted at a broad audience, it integrates several dimensions of comparison into a highly interactive document. The document contrasts the hotels visually and textually from different perspectives, including (i) a geographic perspective with points of interest, (ii) a comparison of ratings across different categories, (iii) rating changes over time, and (iv) summaries of the most noted positive and negative points from the review texts. The interface is accompanied by a sidebar for personalization, which supports selecting relevant points of interest and setting priorities. Changing these adapts the visual comparison across all interface sections to match the user's preferences. A qualitative evaluation with potential hotel customers showed that the personalized visual comparison is valuable for all users, while the advanced features of the interface are leveraged to different extents.

The expansion of the use of a machine learning (ML) technology in multiple domains heavily depends on acceptance of these models by end users and their abilities to understand the patterns discovered by machine learning algorithms. The simplicity and understandability of those patterns by the domain expert is critical for success of such ML explorations. This paper proposes a method for designing lossless compact and interpretable machine learning visual patterns to be easily captured and remembered by the domain experts due to their compactness and simplicity. This glyph approach is illustrated with a "bird" glyph. This glyph is a combination of Stick Figures and a type of General Line Coordinates known as Shifted Paired Coordinates. The efficiency of the approach is demonstrated on several benchmark machine learning data sets.

Understanding the Document Object Model (DOM) is crucial for web development, yet traditional 2D representations can obscure the hierarchical complexity and spatial relationships of HTML elements. This paper introduces babia-html, a component of BabiaXR, which offers a novel approach to visualizing the DOM in 3D and XR for the web. Utilizing A-Frame, we develop a tool that provides real-time, three-dimensional representations of HTML structures. Additionally, we present a plugin for Visual Studio Code (VSCode) that integrates this 3D visualization directly into the development environment. Our goal is to explore how this visualization can enhance the comprehension of HTML structures, improve debugging processes, and facilitate more effective communication of structural changes within development teams. We outline the standalone capabilities of babia-html, its integration as a VSCode extension, and various use cases demonstrating its practical applications. This work provides preliminary insights into the potential benefits of 3D DOM visualization and its implications for modern web development practices, considering the potential impact on developer productivity and cognitive load, and proposing directions for future research and development. As the professional field of data visualization grows, so does the importance of preparing students effectively for the demands of real-world practice. Computing education has historically sought to teach and evaluate abstract knowledge (e.g., theories, principles, guidelines, design patterns) and the application of such knowledge to given problems. However, situations faced in professional practice are often messy, dynamic, and uncertain, and do not lend themselves well to the clear and direct application of such knowledge. This leaves a gap between the knowledge learned in the classroom and what is required for skillful practice in professional settings. In this paper, I discuss some historical reasons for this dominant pedagogical perspective, some of the core features of professional practice that are not typically taught in classrooms, and ways in which data visualization design can be taught to be more resonant with the experience of professional practice.

An Augmented Reality (AR) system based on the holographic projection of the relevant anatomic structures is proposed for auxiliary visualization during surgeries. The current two-dimensional visualization systems require the surgeons to mentally extract the associated three-dimensional information during the interventions, which entails risks and complications. This work shows an AR holographic projection system for real-time three-dimensional representation of the relevant surgical information, thus overcoming this problem. As an initial proof of concept, the system is experimentally assessed as potential surgery training tool.

Traditional ecological survey methods are expensive and time-consuming as they typically involve a domain expert in the field. As a result of this, continuous audio recordings are playing an ever more critical role in conservation and biodiversity monitoring. However, listening to these recordings is often infeasible, as they can be thousands of hours long. The knowledge of domain experts can be efficiently leveraged using visualization. Traditionally, spectrograms are used to visualize audio data. However, there is a limit to the duration of audio that can fit on a computer screen as a spectrogram. Several techniques have been adapted to overcome this. Each of these techniques has its own set of advantages and disadvantages that make it ideal for some situations but unsuitable for others. In this paper, we propose a novel visualization based on embeddings produced by Frequency Preserving Autoencoders. We evaluate by visually comparing with traditional spectrogram and spectral index false-color spectrogram, using human-generated annotations as a baseline. We find that calls from some species are more consistently visible in our autoencoder-based visualization, while others are more clearly visible in the alternative visualizations. This novel visualization presents a new opportunity to assist ecologists in identifying bird calls in long-duration audio, if calls are difficult to identify using other methods.

Operating envelopes are dynamic limits on power injections, computed in advance based on the operational con-ditions of the network, such as load profiles. These dynamic limits can unlock the full potential of distributed energy resources (DERs) by maximizing the use of existing infrastructure while ensuring a reliable power supply. Visualizing operating envelopes presents a significant challenge, it requires effectively conveying spatio-temporal information for multiple connection sites simultaneously. This paper discusses, demonstrates, and evaluates a set of software architecture decisions to support web-based visualization of distribution system operating envelopes. We propose a microservice-oriented architecture with two processing modules: one for time series power flow and another for three-phase unbalanced multi-period optimal power flow (also known as energy scheduling) computations. Both modules are con-tainerized, ensuring strong separation of duties and portability. Additionally, a web-based visualization interface is developed to incorporate advanced interactive visualization techniques to support the analysis of complex spatio-temporal relationships and 'what if' scenarios. The performance of the approach is evaluated by measuring processing time and size from responses considering various distribution feeders, including the 3- Bus, ieee 4-Bus, ieee 13-Bus, and ieee 123-Bus test feeders. © 2025 ieee.

GeoVisual Analytics often uses a wide range of visualization techniques in combination with human interactions. However, in order to improve urban planning decisions and expand the knowledge base about spatio-temporal correlations in cities, we identify high and sometimes difficult-to-overcome data and visualization complexity. Therefore, users need targeted support to reduce this complexity and understand complex multidimensional data. This paper proposes an interactive 3D visualization approach for analyzing spatiotemporal correlations. Effective visual explanations in user-oriented guidance with storytelling elements support this technique. We adapt the approach of flow maps to visualize both resulting correlations and the underlying density of possible destinations from an existing geoanalytical process. Our interactive step-by-step guidance with four narratives aims to create a balance between the author and the user. We evaluated our prototype with various domain experts. The evaluation confirms our approach and improves users' understanding of data and spatio-temporal correlations in urban areas.
