If it is possible to develop a machine-learning algorithm capable of accurately predicting human behavior in a given situation, it is possible to use the machine-learned behavior as an agent that behaves in a human-like manner. Such imitation learning agents can be employed for a variety of educational purposes. Moreover, the use of XAI technology enables the visualization of the key elements that are important to the imitation learning agent. Such a visualization may prove useful for training players of fighting games.

As the request for deep learning solutions increases, the need for explainability is even more fundamental. In this setting, particular attention has been given to visualization techniques, that try to attribute the right relevance to each input pixel with respect to the output of the network. In this paper, we focus on Class Activation Mapping (CAM) approaches, which provide an effective visualization by taking weighted averages of the activation maps. To enhance the evaluation and the reproducibility of such approaches, we propose a novel set of metrics to quantify explanation maps, which show better effectiveness and simplify comparisons between approaches. To evaluate the appropriateness of the proposal, we compare different CAM-based visualization methods on the entire ImageNet validation set, fostering proper comparisons and reproducibility.

Computer Organization and Design is a pivotal course for learning an instruction set architecture (ISA), the microarchitecture which implements it, and determining a system’s overall performance. However, many concepts in this course have been found daunting to understand. To illustrate those concepts, an interactive desktop application is being developed using the Unity game engine for the purpose of enhancing student learning. This tool covers material that is traditionally covered in the course and adds security concepts to make students aware of the security issues associated with micro-architecture.

Objecting grasping is a widely concerned interaction method of prosthetic hands, which is a complicated task remaining to explore and optimize. Aiming to grasp various objects adaptively, a five-finger dexterous soft prosthetic hand is proposed in this paper. Traditional prosthetic hand structures mainly rely on external feedback signals including visual information, which would be disturbed by many factors. Compared with external information, internal signals would be more reliable. Thus, some internal sensors have been equipped in the designed hand to detect grasping motion state, with tactile sensors measuring contact force on fingertips and curvature sensors evaluating fingers' length deformation. Further, an adaptive control strategy is adopted to improve the performance of the designed prosthetic hand. Finally, a series of experiments are carried out to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. The corresponding results following the analysis show that the designed prosthetic hand can achieve great grasping performance on various unknown objects under the specific control strategy.

Leveraging hypergraph structures to model advanced processes has gained much attention over the last few years in many areas, ranging from protein-interaction in computational biology to image retrieval using machine learning. Hypergraph models can provide a more accurate representation of the underlying processes while reducing the overall number of links compared to regular representations. However, interactive visualization methods for hypergraphs and hypergraph-based models have rarely been explored or systematically analyzed. This paper reviews the existing research landscape for hypergraph and hypergraph model visualizations and assesses the currently employed techniques. We provide an overview and a categorization of proposed approaches, focusing on performance, scalability, interaction support, successful evaluation, and the ability to represent different underlying data structures, including a recent demand for a temporal representation of interaction networks and their improvements beyond graph-based methods. Lastly, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the approaches and give an insight into the future challenges arising in this emerging research field.
This paper aims to enhance the efficiency of teaching and learning by leveraging computer vision technology for automated analysis of student behavior in the classroom. We propose a feature-enhanced method for recogni...

This paper presents the research and experimentation developed throughout the ongoing project From Transtopia to Supertopia. It explores the connections between art, bioArt, technology, and data visualization. Transtopia and Supertopia are two multi-layered projects that deal with archives, maps, and human migratory movements based on climate displacement predictions. Its starting point was at In-Situ Artist Residency and V54 (Hong Kong), and the second research moment was at the Halaqat research project at IMAL in Brussels. Transtopia, developed during the artist's residency in Hong Kong (January to April 2020), was based on three propositions: What if the archivist's worst nightmare came true and all our paper-based archives were suddenly lost forever, the body of each document mercilessly eaten away by a strange virus or bug plague? What if all the layers that map and separate the real and the imagined city collapsed onto themselves? Our ecological odds are just as flimsy. What is the use of trying to encapsulate fauna and flora behind glass? The second part of the research, Supertopia dealt with the suggested topic of Politics of Spaces and Bodies, provided by the Halaqat project (March 2022). It examines the different types of "transit" we can experiment with to relate to other people and places. Looking at the predictions related to forced climate displacement, how can the notions of identity and difference be questioned to dilute the human-made borders and increase human efforts to heal our natural environment?
