Federated learning (FL) for distributed data has gained significant attention by enabling model training on local data without transferring it to a central system. While this approach protects sensitive information, risks of data leakage still persist, necessitating the integration of privacy-preserving techniques such as differential privacy. In many FL applications, tasks like exploratory data analysis or tracking and monitoring data that change over time are essential. For these purposes, analysts rely on data visualizations to make decisions or draw conclusions. This vision paper emphasizes the importance of federated privacy-preserving visualization and outlines a general pipeline for its implementation. We discuss the challenges of integrating federated visualizations with differential privacy and demonstrate the feasibility of this approach through examples, such as federated privacy-preserving boxplots, scatterplots, and correlation visualizations in neuroimaging. This highlights the need for further research in this promising field.

With the widespread broadcasting of soccer matches and the remarkable achievements of Japanese players overseas, interest in international and domestic soccer has increased greatly. To maintain and increase soccer enthusiasm, matching players to individual preferences is crucial. However, collecting comprehensive player information and finding suitable matches is challenging. This study focuses on regional and player characteristics by extracting distinctive terms from news articles and calculating their similarities. We propose a methodology to identify players matching specific regions and visualize them on a map, supporting personal recommendations and regional influence assessments. The effectiveness of this visualization interface is evaluated using SUS.

There have been increasing efforts in recent years to apply visualization tools for teaching CS/IT courses. Particularly, the abstractness of programming concepts can be mitigated with visualization tools by providing a WYSIWYG (“what you see is what you get") experience. visualization tools for programming can provide diverse coverage ranging from basic programming concepts such as variables to advanced concepts in data struc-tures and algorithms. Given the varieties of the tools and the fast software updates, we are motivated to identify visualization tool(s) that are current, supportive (e.g., in both breadth and depth of coverage), and friendly (e.g., no learning curve) to facilitate the teaching of programming. Motivated by this, this paper provides a systematic overview of visualization tools according to four defined metrics. Moreover, we share our best-practices in adoption: a hybrid approach for selecting a combination of visualization tools in an introductory programming course and a data structures course. In addition, we discuss students' feedback, our strategies and lessons learned in adopting visualization for teaching programming.

In this work, we introduce two interactive virtual reality (VR) applications, so-called Immersive Inscribed Spaces, for researching Written Artefacts in our interdisciplinary projects. We discuss the potential of using VR to access historical cultural heritage sites and how the immersive experience facilitates individual perception of Written Artefacts. For this novel context, we explore potential use cases and present our implemented features for the VR applications. Furthermore, we examine two major challenges: (1) Spatial interaction and (2) visualization of spatial information. Finally, we describe how we integrated improvements into our applications, based on our research results.

Street-to-aerial image geo-localization, which matches a query street-view image to the GPS-tagged aerial images in a reference set, has attracted increasing attention recently. In this paper, we revisit this problem and point out the ignored issue about image alignment information. We show that the performance of a simple Siamese network is highly dependent on the alignment setting and the comparison of previous works can be unfair if they have different assumptions. Instead of focusing on the feature extraction under the alignment assumption, we show that improvements in metric learning techniques significantly boost the performance regardless of the alignment. Without leveraging the alignment information, our pipeline outperforms previous works on both panorama and cropped datasets. Furthermore, we conduct visualization to help understand the learned model and the effect of alignment information using Grad-CAM. With our discovery on the approximate rotation-invariant activation maps, we propose a novel method to estimate the orientation/alignment between a pair of cross-view images with unknown alignment information. It achieves state-of-the-art results on the CVUSA dataset.
