AI explainability improves the transparency and trustworthiness of models. However, in the domain of images, where deep learning has succeeded the most, explainability is still poorly assessed. In the field of image recognition many feature attribution methods have been proposed with the purpose of explaining a model's behavior using visual cues. However, no metrics have been established so far to assess and select these methods objectively. In this paper we propose a consistent evaluation score for feature attribution methods the Focus designed to quantify their coherency to the task. While most previous work adds out-of-distribution noise to samples, we introduce a methodology to add noise from within the distribution. This is done through mosaics of instances from different classes, and the explanations these generate. On those, we compute a visual pseudo-precision metric, Focus. First, we show the robustness of the approach through a set of randomization experiments. Then we use Focus to compare six popular explainability techniques across several CNN architectures and classification datasets. Our results find some methods to be consistently reliable (LRP, GradCAM), while others produce class-agnostic explanations (SmoothGrad, IG). Finally we introduce another application of Focus, using it for the identification and characterization of biases found in models. This empowers bias-management tools, in another small step towards trustworthy AI.

Improving the accuracy, reliability and performance of high-speed technological systems is one of the most pressing challenges in modern industry. These technologies are implemented at high speeds of tool movement and require a clear interaction of a large number of the technological system or robotic complex elements. Experimental investigations of such systems functioning lead to the receipt of a large amount of data, the display, and analysis of which with the help of universal software means certain difficulties. The paper proposes the creation of specialized software for solving problems of visualization and analysis of experimental data with the ability to simultaneously display several hundred graphs. The proposed algorithm for layer-by-layer graph formation, which provides the task of increasing the speed of data conversion for display and increasing the speed of rendering an image. The proposed algorithm is implemented in specialized software for the visualization and analysis of experimental data obtained in the CNC system. © 2021 ieee.

Changes in epidermal thickness are linked to various skin diseases, such as diabetic foot. Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), a noninvasive imaging technology, enables detailed visualization of skin layers. This study employed a deep learning approach using the U-Net architecture to analyze OCT images, specifically focusing on the stratum corneum (SC) and epidermis (ED) layers. Utilizing a dataset of 10,000 images, the U-Net model achieved 92 % accuracy in predicting SC and 95% accuracy for ED. These results highlight the potential of this method for accurate 3D visualization of SC and ED layers, paving the way for precise assessment of skin layer thickness and its changes in medical applications.

The complexity of large real-world graphs makes their analyses prohibitively costly and their visualizations uninformative. The idea behind graph reduction is to reduce the size of a graph while preserving its properties of interest. To improve computational efficiency and to provide provable guarantees, many graph reduction techniques employ randomization. However, the uncertainty associated with randomized graph reduction and its subsequent interpretation has remained largely unexplored. In this paper, we present a framework to quantify and visualize the uncertainty associated with randomized graph reduction techniques. We focus on spectral clustering introduced by Ng, Jordan, and Weiss, a popular graph reduction technique that reduces the number of nodes by clustering the nodes of a graph into super-nodes. We introduce two uncertainty measures - local adjusted Rand indices and co-occurrences - to quantify and visualize uncertainty associated with an ensemble of reduced graphs. We demonstrate via experiments, that these measures complement each other in visualizing uncertainty and guiding the selection of optimal numbers of clusters. © 2022 ieee.

Navigation as well as mapping using robots is currently widely used in various fields. Automated robot navigation and mapping allows robots to provide information about their surroundings to humans more effectively. LiDAR is one of the latest technologies used to carry out environmental mapping. The implementation of LiDAR technology coupled with legged robots is useful for autonomously mapping environments that have uneven trajectories, such as on the ground, rocky areas, and grass. Quadruped robot is a type of legged robot that is used in research and operations in the industrial world or in observing certain environmental areas. Determining the appropriate gait according to the observed characteristics of the robot and the environment, selecting the algorithm for mapping, and presenting the visualization of the map must be met for the success of the mapping process. This research applies Hector SLAM, crawl gait, trot gait, and the use of LiDAR technology to map the artificial environment which is carried out autonomously by a quadruped robot with the aim of obtaining information in the form of an environmental map which is visualized using RViz. The implementation of crawl gait to move forward is considered the most suitable for the quadruped robot in this research because the load being lifted is quite heavy, namely ±1.5kg, while the implementation of a dynamic trot gait is used to turn left or right. The result of this research is that the quadruped robot is able to walk through a well-defined environment and draw a complete map of the observed artificial environment with an accuracy rate of 97%. © 2023 ieee.

The article describes the technology of developing a web application for a sheet rolling shop mnemonic diagram with a sheet metal movement visualization system and an algorithm for processing information flows about their location. The relevance of creating a mnemonic diagram is substantiated. The need to increase transparency in the sheet metal tracking and accounting system through visualization is shown, which is due to the problem of controllability of production processes that lead to downtime on units and corresponding violations in the steel sheet control and accounting system. The web application is a Django application developed using the Redis noSQL DBMS. With the help of the developed algorithm consisting of a sheet movement tracking module and a web interface, developers have the opportunity to debug the application without having to install equipment at the stage of designing and testing the web application. The information flow tracking algorithm, file structure and web page of the application, and the structure of JSON data transmitted to Redis are presented. This approach allows increasing the transparency and efficiency of the 2800 mill, increasing the speed of decision-making on managing production operations in the shop within a shift. © 2025 ieee.

This Work-in-Progress Research paper explores how to design and implement Collaborative Virtual Reality Learning Environments (CVRLE) taking Teacher-Student Dynamics (TSD) into account. CVRLEs engage students in a virtual representation of a learning space. However, they do not incorporate TSDs, which are key elements of in-person teaching. The current work explores how to recreate one specific TSD: the watchfulness teachers have over the students' location during a field trip. We propose and compare seamless approaches to recreate this TSD inside CVRLEs via virtual safety boundaries around the teacher. These boundaries keep students in proximity to their instructor as they explore the CVRLE. The current work explores five approaches: 1) an invisible wall (used as baseline), 2) sound-based feedback, 3) a virtual companion, 4) a translucent rope connected to the teacher and 5) a translucent dome mesh around the teacher. The approaches were validated by five middle school teachers, who provided feedback about them from an educator's point of view. The interviews highlighted the importance of subtle and simple approaches that provide a sense of freedom to the students and minimize cognitive load while maintaining the TSDs. Overall, the vision of this Work-in-Progress is to solidify CVRLEs into a plausible method to perform teaching and learning when co-presence between teacher and students cannot be guaranteed. The design guidelines from this project will inform the creation of future interactive CVRLEs. © 2023 ieee.

Online learning participation drives online learning and promotes learning satisfaction;however, participation in online learning is inherently low because there is a lack of monitoring learning information. The purpose of this study is to develop a visualization system to enhance online learning participation based on learning behaviors and social presence, and to evaluate its effects. The visualization system provides learners' learning information from two perspectives: individual information on learners' learning behaviors and group information on discussion scripts. An online university course was augmented with a visualization system, and 66 first year university students registered for it. The results of the Mann-Whitney-U-Test showed that students who accessed the system's pie-chart function (regarding the frequency of using reading functions in groups) tended to highlight important content at a higher frequency and achieved higher final scores which were calculated based on the mini-reports, discussions and final reports than those who did not. Furthermore, compared to those who did not use the system's heatmap function (regarding the reading time in groups), students who used it read more of the learning material during the online course and received higher final scores.
