Automatic Augmented Reality (AR)-based work support systems seamlessly display the next step instruction when the current task step completion is detected, all without requiring explicit user interaction. However, whenever the progress estimation fails it can lead to confusion and loss of trust in the system. To support the user’s understanding of the reliability of the displayed instructions, we display the confidence of the current step. To explore the effects the presented confidence has on user interaction with the system, we conducted a Wizard-of-Oz style user study with 12 participants. Participants had to assemble a LEGO model with and without confidence visualization, where the confidence for each step was predefined. Our results showed that while the visualization did not increase the user’s performance, participants preferred having the confidence displayed to them, especially when it was low. Our findings provide insights into the design of enhancing the user’s perception of uncertainty in current step detection in automated instruction systems.

When navigating in a shared environment, the extent to which robots are able to effectively use signals for coordinating with human behaviors can ameliorate dissatisfaction and increase acceptance. In this paper, we present an online video study to investigate whether familiar acoustic signals can improve the legibility of a robot's navigation behavior. We collected the responses of 120 participants to evaluate their perceptions of a robot that communicates with one of the three used non-verbal navigational cues (an acoustic signal, an acoustic in pair with a visual signal, and a dissimilar frequency acoustic signal). Our results showed a significant legibility improvement when the robot used both light and acoustic signals to communicate its intentions compared to using only the same acoustic sound. Additionally, our findings highlighted that people also perceived differently the robot's intentions when they were expressed through two frequencies of the mere sound. The results of this work suggest a paradigm that can help the development of mobile service robots in public spaces.

The NASA Ingenuity helicopter and Perseverance rover demonstrated the first coordinated operation between a ground based rover and aerial helicopter on another planet in April 2021. This included successful deployment of the helicopter from the belly of the rover and multiple flights of the helicopter while the rover documented the event with imaging, video, and audio. The rover relayed commands and wake up schedules to the helicopter, which it received during its daily communications with the Deep Space Network. Thus, operators on Earth needed to include commanding for both the rover and the helicopter in the daily uplink bundles. Sequencing and visualization of spacecraft commands is an integral part of verifying a set of activities prior to uplink, through simulation of hardware motion and interaction with terrain meshes. The introduction of the Ingenuity helicopter presented a need for planning multi-spacecraft interactions between the rover and helicopter. This was especially important during the critical event of driving away post helicopter deployment, involving close clearances between the systems. Helicopter flights needed to ensure a keepout distance from the rover, subsequent rover traverses needed to avoid coming into contact with the helicopter, and imaging needed to be correctly pointed to include the helicopter location and flight path. All of these capabilities were incorporated into the operations planning software used by the Helicopter Integration Engineer team to model and verify plans involving both rover and helicopter commanding. In this paper we discuss updates to the Robot Sequencing and visualization Program (RSVP), used for coordinating the interactions between the Ingenuity helicopter and Perseverance rover. The purpose of this study was to explore the Unity3D to provide large-scale GIS data. This study has four stages. The first stage is data gathering, the second stage is data integration, the third stage is data visualization design, and the last stage is GIS interaction design. Unity3D can visualize the virtual environment. Unity3D also provides a rich set of libraries and assets for user interaction. However, building a GIS requires a projection / coordinate system. Mapbox extension can provide georeferencing services for Unity3D. Mapbox also makes it possible to overlay vector layers in the same way as GIS software. Utilizing a game engine for GIS development is expected to enrich GIS with more interactive content visualization techniques. Understanding user profiling on social media poses significant challenges due to the intertwined complexities of network structures, user interactions, and the multi-dimensional nature of the data. To reduce visual clutter and offer complementary perspectives for engagingly exploring user profiling within these networks, we propose Social Media Island, an interactive 3D metaphoric visualization system. Our system uses 3D mountain metaphors to visualize user profiling, capturing user influence and activity, while tree metaphors visualize the information forwarding process. To support a flexible scope for users to explore in a more intriguing way, we design various interactions such as cutting the mountain to split out a subset with similarity to some extent for further exploration. By using these 3D visualizations with user interactions, Social Media Island facilitates immersion in the data, the fluid exploration of user influence, topic evolution, and the spread of information. The effectiveness of metaphors is evaluated by user studies, and that of the system is evaluated through two case studies.

Augmented Reality (AR) has been explored with the objective to assist in scenarios of co-located or remote collaboration. To help understand how well collaborative work can be addressed with AR, it is important to foster harmonization of perspectives and create a common ground for systematization and discussion. In this vein, understand relationships among existing dimensions of collaboration, as well as identify research opportunities, is of paramount importance and thus tools that allow visually exploring information associated with Collaborative AR may be most valuable. In this paper, we present a first effort towards the creation of such an interactive visualization tool for exploration and analysis of collaborative AR research. It allows visualize data of selected papers organized according to a human-centered taxonomy on collaborative AR. In order to get insights into whether the structure was understood and if the representation was clear and efficient to use, we evaluated the proposed tool through a user study with 40 participants. Results suggest the tool has potential towards the creation of a shared understanding and identification of existing patterns, trends and opportunities within the field of collaborative AR.

With the continuous improvement of system scale and complexity, model-based system engineering (MBSE) is of great importance in the practice of system engineering (SE). MBSE has been widely concerned in industry, especially in the field of complex equipment. At the same time, in academia, research articles about MBSE come into being and grow rapidly. In this paper, keywords and full-texts of 143 high quality articles related to MBSE field are extracted from relevant journals of ieee and INCOSE communities, and the research contents of MBSE field are visualized and analyzed by using a thirdparty Python WordCloud library. The research focuses on: (a) identifying related concepts of MBSE;(b) exploring research contents of MBSE;(c) analyzing three pillars of MBSE: modeling languages, methods and tools based on articles. The results show that MBSE plays an important role in realizing system architecture design and developing system architecture models by applying modeling technology to support system requirements, design, analysis and evaluation, verification and validation in the whole life cycle of product development. SysML and OPM are the most popular modeling languages and modeling methods in MBSE research field respectively. This paper provides a technical route reference for exploring the current research field of MBSE by using WordCloud text analysis which is helpful to predict the future research of MBSE.
