Visualizing data in tables usually is not the best way to help users understanding large amounts of data. Instead, data visualization in graphical format, such as charts, has been used to explore available data. A good data visualization is defined as a well-designed presentation of interesting data, aiming to communicate ideas with clarity, precision and efficiency. Nowadays, considering the open data movement, many open data portals offer different types of data visualization. However, when browsing some of these portals, we can find many bad data visualizations, frequently ambiguous, confusing and unusable. Hence, it is essential to have an instrument capable of analyzing the quality of data visualizations, helping the designer to use the full capacity of a data visualization to provide a more efficient resource information to the users. This work aims to present an instrument that integrate a set of heuristics to assess the quality of data visualizations. Such heuristics were chosen due to have been previously proposed in several works in literature, and proved successful. To evaluate the proposed instrument, we conducted an experiment with a group composed by computer science graduate students. We analyzed the results using Cohen's Kappa and Any-two agreement statistical tests, which indicated that the instrument is adequate.

Hardware design is increasingly shifted towards higher abstraction levels to cope with the complexity of modern systems. For this purpose, the concept of Hardware/Software Co-Design has been established. Systems are implemented in high-level languages such as C++ or SystemC, providing an executable prototype without requiring designers to decide in an early stage on whether features should be implemented in hardware or software. For these, just like for pure hardware or software systems, design understanding remains crucial. Hardware/Software Co-visualization (HSCV) is a concept that has recently been proposed to assist developers in communicating features of their design. Especially for visualizations, designers need to be able to quickly generate the underlying data and the resulting visual representation. This paper illustrates the current state of HSCV and proposes a methodology to harmonize the visualization data being generated from Electronic System Level designs written in SystemC.

Geographic visualizations are, due to the limited need for vertical navigation, suitable for touch tables. In this poster we consider the design of interaction design for selection and manipulation through touch on the screen used for the display of 3D geographic visualization-in our case the visualization of and interaction with drone traffic over rural and urban areas-focusing on moving from a monoscopic to a more immersive, stereoscopic touch table, and how this move affects the interaction design. With a monoscopic display our stereoscopic vision uses the graphics to perceive the location of the surface, and touch interaction can naturally and intuitively be performed on top of 3D objects. Moving to stereocopic display, for increased sense of immersion, the graphics no longer provide visual cues about the location of the screen. We argue that this motivates modification of the design principles, with an alternative interaction design as a result.

SAS (R) Visual Analytics Explorer is an advanced data visualization and exploratory data analysis application that is a component of the SAS Visual Analytics solution. It excels at handling big data problems like the VAST challenge. With a wide range of visual analytics features and the ability to scale to massive datasets, SAS Visual Analytics Explorer enables analysts to find patterns and relationships quickly and easily, no matter the size of their data. In this summary paper, we explain how we used SAS Visual Analytics Explorer to solve the VAST Challenge 2012 mini-challenge 1.

This study examines the performance of stocks investment portfolio by using accounting information. The sample is selected from Taiwan Economic Journal to test F-SCORE cooperating with Dividend-to price ratio, Earnings-to -price Ratio and Book-to -Market respectively. The sample period is from May, 2008 to May, 2018. The findings of this study are as follows. First, if we choose Dividend-to-price ratio, Earnings-to -price Ratio or Book-to-Market to distinguish from the value and growth portfolio, the value portfolio is significantly better than the growth one. Second, if we choose F-SCORE to distinguish from high and low score, the high score portfolio is significantly better than the low score one. The result showed that when the investor use Dividend-to price ratio, Earnings-to-price Ratio or Book-to-Market together with fundamental financial information, they could become more profitable or more effectively improve the performance.

Unfamiliar or esoteric visual forms arise in many areas of visualization. While such forms can be intriguing, it can be unclear how to make effective use of them without long periods of practice or costly user studies. In this work we analyze the table cartogram-a graphic which visualizes tabular data by bringing the areas of a grid of quadrilaterals into correspondence with the input data, like a heat map that has been "area-ed" rather than colored. Despite having existed for several years, little is known about its appropriate usage. We mend this gap by using Algebraic visualization Design to show that they are best suited to relatively small tables with ordinal axes for some comparison and outlier identification tasks. In doing so we demonstrate a discount theory-based analysis that can be used to cheaply determine best practices for unknown visualizations.

A microscope visualization technique is used to examine the accumulation of liquid droplets on the air-bearing surfaces of a head or 'slider' in real time while the slider is in an experimental, but fully functioning disk drive, Such droplets are known to contribute to a condition of increased static friction or 'stiction' at disk drive startup, Since this phenomenon results from prior drive operation while the sliders are, in effect, flying, it is called 'fly stiction', The liquid formed on the slider is predominantly composed of simple hydrocarbons, such as alkanes, The liquid volume increases linearly with time, These observations are consistent with some mechanisms where liquid molecules or nuclei use sites on the disk as an intermediary before transferring to the slider.

Detection of sophisticated stealthy network scans requires analyzing large amounts of network data collected over long periods of time. The sheer volume of the data prohibits efficient detection from a pure algorithmic approach. However timely detection of such sophisticated scanning attacks is critical since the attacker employing these approaches is usually well-resourced and potentially can bring high impact to the network than a naive attacker can. To detect such sophisticated scans we propose the integration of algorithmic detection and visualization for human detection to simultaneously optimize computational complexity and human analyst time. The proposed approach provides real world detection capabilities without excessive computation overhead. We characterize the features of scanning attacks in a graph theory context, propose efficient graph algorithms to extract these features in real time, employ visualization techniques to show the relevant multidimensional characteristics, and provide test scenarios to show that the proposed work is more efficient and effective than previous approaches.

Privacy is a leading concern for anyone that utilizes computing resources whether shopping on the Internet or visiting their doctor. Legislative acts require enterprises and data collectors to protect the privacy of their customers and data owners. Although privacy policy frameworks such as P3P assist data collectors in demonstrating their privacy policies to customers (i.e. publishing privacy policy on websites), insufficient research has been reported to help users visualize privacy policies. This paper presents a privacy policy visualization model based on the predicates of a privacy policy model. The key contribution is to provide a visualization model that facilitates understanding the policies for the data owners and provides the opportunity for the policy officers to better understand the designed policies. Finally, we demonstrate the model with a use case drawn from the policies of an online social network.
