In several fields handling event data, exploring periodicity and similarity of the occurrence times of events is an important task. When we analyze event data, we often focus on temporal features of event groups, periodic features of events, and similarity of temporal features among event groups. This paper illustrates a visualization method to efficiently observe such features for multiple events. The method represents the temporal features of each event group with a glyph and represents the periodic features and their similarity with an arrangement of glyphs. To determine an arrangement of glyphs, a ChronoView graph representing periodic features of event groups is integrated with pseudo multidimensional scaling (MDS) in a 3D space. This paper also demonstrates the effectiveness of the visualization method for temporal data analysis with a use case exploring significant events from an actual dataset.

VANET Simulation schemes require a combination of mobility and wireless network simulation packages, coupled with custom scripts, visualization tools and various scenarios. The results of simulation studies need to be supported by special tools or scripts to analyze or visualize them easily. Some additional difficulties arise at sharing the results, visually comparing simulation runs across different platforms and showcasing the findings of a research to a larger audience. As a solution, we have developed a 3D Web-based visualization Tool for VANET Simulations (WGL-VANET), which takes advantage of HTML5 and WebGL technologies to create a cross-platform, easy-to-use and flexible visualization tool for VANET simulations. WGL-VANET reads simulation data from a JSON document and supports a variety of visual features, and displays the simulation run on a WebGL canvas inside a web-browser.

In ill-posed inverse problems, it is commonly desirable to obtain insight into the full spectrum of plausible solutions, rather than extracting only a single reconstruction. information about the plausible solutions and their likelihoods is encoded in the posterior distribution. However, for high-dimensional data, this distribution is challenging to visualize. In this work, we introduce a new approach for estimating and visualizing posteriors by employing energy-based models (EBMs) over low-dimensional subspaces. Specifically, we train a conditional EBM that receives an input measurement and a set of directions that span some low-dimensional subspace of solutions, and outputs the probability density function of the posterior within that space. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method across a diverse range of datasets and image restoration problems, showcasing its strength in uncertainty quantification and visualization. As we show, our method outperforms a baseline that projects samples from a diffusion-based posterior sampler, while being orders of magnitude faster. Furthermore, it is more accurate than a baseline that assumes a Gaussian posterior. Code is available at https://***/yairomer/PPDE

Large-scale simulations conducted on supercomputers such as leadership-class computing facilities allow researchers to simulate and study complex problems with high fidelity, and thus have become indispensable in diverse areas of science and engineering. These high-fidelity simulations generate vast amount of data which is becoming more and more difficult to transform into knowledge using traditional visual analysis approaches. For instance, there are tremendous challenges in analyzing big data produced by high-fidelity simulations in order to gain meaningful insight into complex phenomena such as turbulent two-phase flows. The traditional workflow, which consists in conducting simulations on supercomputers and recording enormous raw simulation data to disk for further post-processing and visualization, is no longer a viable approach due to prohibitive cost of disk access and considerable amount of time spent on data transfer. Visual Analytics approaches for big data have to be researched and employed to address the problem of knowledge discovery from such large-scale simulations. One approach to tackle this issue is to couple a numerical simulation with in-situ visualization so that the post-processing and visualization occurs while the simulation is running. This in-situ approach minimizes data storage by extracting and visualizing important features of the data directly within the simulation without saving the raw data to disk. In addition, in-situ visualization allows users to steer the simulation by adjusting input parameters while the simulation is ongoing. In this paper, we present our approach for in-situ visualization of simulation data generated by massively parallel finite-element computational fluid dynamics solver (PHASTA) instrumented and linked with ParaView Catalyst. We demonstrate our in-situ visualization and simulation steering capability with a fully resolved turbulent flow through 2 x 2 reactor subchannel complex geometry. In addition, we presen

visualization is a key step in scientific analysis and understanding in many fields. Scientific studies often require development of software that produces visualizations. However, as a study proceeds, the software evolves, and both developers and expert users have to periodically ascertain how code modifications affect visualization output and hence the results of the study. To our knowledge, no current visualization framework enables tracking and comparison of the lineage of scientific visualizations. We describe an approach for comparing and maintaining the code for scientific analysis and modeling through interactive comparison of visualization output. We have realized this approach in a tool called Mr. Clean. This tool provides a framework for combining different visualization tools, interaction devices, and display middleware for visual comparisons on high-resolution displays. Mr. Clean also provides user-configurable interactions supported by many devices. We provide use cases and a requirement analysis for our approach, and we describe the design and implementation of Mr. Clean. Source code is available at: https://***/UniversityofTromso/mrclean.

For decades, the growth and volume of digital data collection has made it challenging to digest large volumes of information and extract underlying structure. Coined 'Big Data', massive amounts of information has quite often been gathered inconsistently (e.g from many sources, of various forms, at different rates, etc.). These factors impede the practices of not only processing data, but also analyzing and displaying it in an efficient manner to the user. Many efforts have been completed in the data mining and visual analytics community to create effective ways to further improve analysis and achieve the knowledge desired for better understanding. Our approach for improved big data visual analytics is two-fold, focusing on both visualization and interaction. Given geo-tagged information, we are exploring the benefits of visualizing datasets in the original geospatial domain by utilizing a virtual reality platform. After running proven analytics on the data, we intend to represent the information in a more realistic 3D setting, where analysts can achieve an enhanced situational awareness and rely on familiar perceptions to draw in-depth conclusions on the dataset. In addition, developing a human-computer interface that responds to natural user actions and inputs creates a more intuitive environment. Tasks can be performed to manipulate the dataset and allow users to dive deeper upon request, adhering to desired demands and intentions. Due to the volume and popularity of social media, we developed a 3D tool visualizing Twitter on MIT's campus for analysis. Utilizing emerging technologies of today to create a fully immersive tool that promotes visualization and interaction can help ease the process of understanding and representing big data.

An empirical study of the methods available for visualization of proposed building structures was undertaken at the University of Salford. This formed the basis for a structured survey of 103 construction related professionals. Their views were obtained on the mediums currently being used in the construction industry;the effectiveness of these mediums to communicate information;and the applicability of visualization techniques within their own organization. The results highlight the need for further investigation and research into visualization techniques, particularly in connection with the needs and understanding of construction industry clients. This corroborates the findings of the recent Latham Working Groups, who place great emphasis on the need for improved communication and image within the construction industry.

Interdisciplinary research is currently the central scientific approach, assumed to be the answer to large-scale research problems (e.g., health and aging, economics and production in high-wage countries). Although it is quite popular, there is still a lack of knowledge about how to measure, steer, support, and manage interdisciplinary success. This paper presents an approach to analyze, steer, and manage the structure and success of interdisciplinary cooperation by implementing a publication network visualization tool into an interdisciplinary research cluster. The presented study is an exploratory interview study addressing the significance of mixed node publication visualization usage within interdisciplinary teams. Members of a sample research group (N = 5) were asked to evaluate the publication visualization approach in order to find out more about the usefulness of such a tool for the interdisciplinary workflow. First results show that benefits of such a tool are seen in the ease of finding potential partners for cooperation. Barriers were seen, on the one hand, in the limitation of parameters that can be visualized, and on the other hand, in effects that could follow an implementation (e.g., pressure to publish, competition among team members, etc.).
