Scientific visualization applications are very data-intensive, with high demands for I/O and data management. Developers of many visualization tools hesitate to use traditional DBMSs, due to the lack of support for these DBMSs on parallel platforms and the risk of reducing the portability of their tools and the user data. In this paper we propose the GODIVA framework, which provides simple database-like interfaces to help visualization tool developers manage their in-memory data, and I/O optimizations such as prefetching and caching to improve input performance at run time. We implemented the GODIVA interfaces in a stand-alone, portable user library, which can be used by all types of visualization codes: interactive and batch-mode, sequential and parallel. Performance results from running a visualization tool using the GODIVA library on multiple platforms show that the GODIVA framework is easy to use, alleviates developers' data management burden, and can bring substantial I/O performance improvement.

Recently, Wall et al. proposed a set of computational metrics for quantifying cognitive bias based on user interaction sequences. The metrics rely on a Markov model to predict a user's next interaction based on the current interaction. The metrics characterize how a user's actual interactive behavior deviates from a theoretical baseline, where "unbiased behavior" was previously defined to be equal probabilities of all interactions. In this paper, we analyze the assumptions made of these metrics. We conduct a study in which participants, subject to anchoring bias, interact with a scatterplot to complete a categorization task. Our results indicate that, rather than equal probabilities of all interactions, unbiased behavior across both bias conditions can be better approximated by proximity of data points.

Augmented Reality (AR) has been explored with the objective to assist in scenarios of co-located or remote collaboration. To help understand how well collaborative work can be addressed with AR, it is important to foster harmonization of perspectives and create a common ground for systematization and discussion. In this vein, understand relationships among existing dimensions of collaboration, as well as identify research opportunities, is of paramount importance and thus tools that allow visually exploring information associated with Collaborative AR may be most valuable. In this paper, we present a first effort towards the creation of such an interactive visualization tool for exploration and analysis of collaborative AR research. It allows visualize data of selected papers organized according to a human-centered taxonomy on collaborative AR. In order to get insights into whether the structure was understood and if the representation was clear and efficient to use, we evaluated the proposed tool through a user study with 40 participants. Results suggest the tool has potential towards the creation of a shared understanding and identification of existing patterns, trends and opportunities within the field of collaborative AR.

WindowMirror(1) toolkit provides users with a simulated, extended screen real-estate. It allows users to interact with multiple desktop applications in real-time within a XR environment. Our architecture has two main modules: a Unity package and a Python backend. WindowMirror supports traditional desktop interaction methods such as mouse, keyboard and it features a Cylindrical Window Layout, an emerging design pattern which is particularly effective for single-user, egocentric perspectives.

High-throughput experiments, such as gene expression microarrays in the life sciences, result in very large data sets. In response, a wide variety of visualization tools have been created to facilitate data analysis. A primary purpose of these tools is to provide biologically relevant insight into the data. Typically, visualizations are evaluated in controlled studies that measure user performance on predetermined tasks or using heuristics and expert reviews. To evaluate and rank bioinformatics visualizations based on real-world data analysis scenarios, we developed a more relevant evaluation method that focuses on data insight. This paper presents several characteristics of insight that enabled us to recognize and quantify it in open-ended user tests. Using these characteristics, we evaluated five microarray visualization tools on the amount and types of insight they provide and the time it takes to acquire it. The results of the study guide biologists in selecting a visualization tool based on the type of their microarray data, visualization designers on the key role of user interaction techniques, and evaluators on a new approach for evaluating the effectiveness of visualizations for providing insight. Though we used the method to analyze bioinformatics visualizations, it can be applied to other domains.

Multi-mobile devices connected to large displays afford collaborative exploration of large data sets and make decisions. However, typical interfaces for the large, such as an overview of the whole data set, do not well designed to support collaboration and promote communication. This paper introduces one innovative multiple view on large displays that accommodate multiple individual viewports in different scales in the shared space to facilitate data exchange, data comparison, and support communication. We conducted a controlled study to evaluate our approach to traditional shared display interfaces. The experiment found our techniques improved collaboration effectiveness, and individual detailed viewports during data exploration play an essential role in collaboration. Our work can potentially improve and extend our understanding of how to visualize information on shared displays.

The theoretical aspects of visualization of nano-objects by scattering of surface plasmon-polariton are discussed in the frame of local-field approach. It was shown that the image intensity measured by the optical detector depends on the distance between nano-object and surface and their interaction is resonant. Besides, it was shown that the main feature of the used approach is taken into account the inhomogeneity of the local field at the nanoparticle. In part, it was obtained that position of maximum intensity depends linear on particle radius. The results of calculations were compared with experimental data obtained by other scientific teams.

From the point of view of an enterprise architect, the visual analysis of the structure of an Enterprise Model can provide powerful insights and facilitate various analysis tasks. However, analysis methods and visualizations that offer the most valuable results usually depend on the concepts found on the Enterprise Metamodel, and are subjected to a concrete EA modeling tool. In this paper we argue that many structural and domain-specific analysis methods can be automated, composed, and their results visualized in a modular manner. To achieve this, we describe the foundations of a flexible and configurable approach for EA Analysis that is based on components that encapsulate metamodel-specific analysis and visualization techniques, supported by a metamodel-independent platform. The approach is explained with ArchiMate by using a module, currently in development, which we call PRIMate. Benefits from this approach include the integration with existing modeling environments, the reuse of analysis and visualization capabilities in any metamodel, as well as an explicit, composite, and traceable visual analysis process.

This paper deals with the design and architecture of the low cost Multipurpose Flight visualization System (MFVS). The MFVS system was originally developed as a passive IFR approach system for general aviation small planes. A relatively high adaptability is one of the main advantages. It can be easily used with many types of avionics devices. The GPS/INS system is used as the primary data source. The data from the GPS/INS system are preprocessed by proprietary neural network unit that feeds the 3D visualization system. The neural network unit is responsible for adaptation of this system and can eliminate problems caused by data delays and data dropouts. The 3D visualization unit processes data from the neural network unit and eventually from the 6DOF tracker that is placed on the pilot's HMD (Head Mounted Display). The unit then generates a 3D view of the surrounding environment that is similar to the 3D environment the pilot knows from flight simulators. The source of environment data is the terrain and object/obstacle database. The image output can be displayed on HUD, MFD or HMD.

In order to effectively combat Air Pollution, it is necessary for the government and the community to work together. Easily comprehensible visualizations can play a major role in drawing public attention and spreading awareness about seemingly intangible air pollution. Considering the widespread usage of Android-based devices, in this paper, we propose an Augmented Reality based application called AiR, to help users to visualize pollutants in the air and to create an immersive user experience. It aims to interactively engage a wide variety of users and create awareness without overwhelming them with data. AiR visualizes 12 pollutants [PM10, PM2.5, NO, NO2, NOx, CO, SO2,O-3,NH3, C6H6, (CH3)C6H5 and (CH3)(2)C6H5] through unique models. We demonstrate our application on pollution data by CPCB from various weather stations across India collected over the initial lockdown period due to COVID-19 in India.
