Composite temporal event sequence visualizations have included sentinel event alignment techniques to cope with data volume and variety. Prior work has demonstrated the utility of using single-event alignment for understanding the precursor, co-occurring, and aftereffect events surrounding a sentinel event. However, the usefulness of single-event alignment has not been sufficiently evaluated in composite visualizations. Furthermore, recently proposed dual-event alignment techniques have not been empirically evaluated. In this work, we designed tasks around temporal event sequence and timing analysis and conducted a controlled experiment on Amazon Mechanical Turk to examine four sentinel event alignment approaches: no sentinel event alignment (NoAlign), single-event alignment (SingleAlign), dual-event alignment with left justification (DualLeft), and dual-event alignment with stretch justification (DualStretch). Differences between approaches were most pronounced with more rows of data. For understanding intermediate events between two sentinel events, dual-event alignment was the clear winner for correctness-71% vs. 18% for NoAlign and SingleAlign. For understanding the duration between two sentinel events, NoAlign was the clear winner: correctness-88% vs. 36% for DualStretch-completion time-55 seconds vs. 101 seconds for DualLeft- and error-1.5% vs. 8.4% for DualStretch. For understanding precursor and aftereffect events, there was no significant difference among approaches. This paper presents an advanced evenly-spaced streamline placement algorithm for fast, high-quality, and robust layout of flow lines. A fourth-order Runge-Kutta integrator with adaptive step size and error control is employed for rapid accurate streamline advection. Cubic Hermite polynomial interpolation with large sample-spacing is adopted to create fewer evenly-spaced samples along each streamline to reduce the amount of distance checking. We propose two methods to enhance placement quality. Double queues are used to prioritize topological seeding and to favor long streamlines to minimize discontinuities. Adaptive distance control based on the local flow variance is explored to reduce cavities. Furthermore, we propose a universal, effective, fast, and robust loop detection strategy to address closed and spiraling streamlines. Our algorithm is an order-of-magnitude faster than Jobard and Lefer's algorithm [8] with better placement quality and over 5 times faster than Mebarki et al.'s algorithm [9] with comparable placement quality, but with a more robust solution to loop detection.

Low frequency power oscillations are well-known problem in the contest of power system stability issues. Some of these oscillations get triggered due to events, but can be damped out. On the other hand, undamped oscillations result into system collapse. In this regard, Wide Area Monitoring Systems (WAMS) using Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs) signals can assist in monitoring of power oscillations. This paper presents a scheme for visual monitoring of low frequency power oscillations. The scheme uses empirical mode decomposition (EMD) technique to decompose the segmented moving window frame of PMUs signal and provide relevant information of mode and damping. In the developed visualization toolbox, it is possible to know several low frequency modes present in the segmented frame and how frequently these are observed in the entire length of PMUs data.

Patents contain important technical, legal and economic information. Their annual publication accounts for a quarter of the books and journals in the world. Along with the growing number of patents, patent clustering analysis is becoming more and more important. We focus on two key issues in patent clustering, namely patent representation and data visualization. Firstly, patents are represented as technology and effect pairs, and then patents are clustered based on technology and effect matrix, finally a multi-layer patent map is generated. The experiments results show that our method has higher efficiency and better clustering effect than traditional vector space model and the visualization of clustering result is more practical and scalable.

The use of cognitive heuristics often leads to fast and effective decisions. However, they can also systematically and predictably lead to errors known as cognitive biases. Strategies for minimizing or mitigating these biases, however, remain largely non-technological (e.g., training courses). The growing use of visual analytic (VA) tools for analysis and decision making enables a new class of bias mitigation strategies. In this work, we explore the ways in which the design of visualizations (vis) may be used to mitigate cognitive biases. We derive a design space comprised of 8 dimensions that can be manipulated to impact a user's cognitive and analytic processes and describe them through an example hiring scenario. This design space can be used to guide and inform future vis systems that may integrate cognitive processes more closely.

Action recognition using depth sequences plays important role in many fields, e.g., intelligent surveillance, content-based video retrieval. Real applications require robust and accurate action recognition method. In this paper, we propose a skeleton visualization method, which efficiently encodes the spatial-temporal information of skeleton joints into a set of color images. These images are served as inputs for convolutional neural networks to extract more discriminative deep features. To enhance the ability of deep features to capture global relationships, we extend the color images into multi-temporal version. Additionally, to solve the effect of view point changes, a spatial transform method is adopted as a preprocessing step. Extensive experiments on NTU RGB+D dataset and ICME2017 challenge show that our method can accurately distinguish similar actions and shows robustness to view variations.

The MOST bus is a current bits technology for connecting multimedia components in cars, such as radios, navigation systems, or media players. The bus functionality is described in a large hierarchically structured catalog of some 4'000 entries. Browsing this catalog has become infeasible on paper as well as with currently used textual database interfaces. An observation of current work practices has revealed many problems and inefficiencies. We describe the (iteratively developed) design of MostVis, a visual tool for exploring MOST function catalogs, as well as an evaluation of our implemented prototype. Our design carefully adapts existing visualization techniques and combines them in a multiple coordinated view (MCV) approach to satisfy the specific needs of our target group. With this paper, we hope to provide a living example of how existing general-purpose techniques can be successfully trimmed and tailored for a very specific audience.
