Recent literature reviews point out that active data physicalizations still lack evaluation scenarios. These evaluations mainly focus on the perception of visual and physical characteristics of physicalizations and users' performance of analysis tasks. This paper addresses a proposed accuracy assessment of data physicalization for data representation. The data physicalization used is a physical and dynamic bar chart using 3D printed models (3D bars) and LED strips inside the bars, both controlled by microcontrollers (Arduino), being possible to represent different datasets. The accuracy assessment of this physicalization is based on the height and color of the 3D bars. For this, distance sensors measure the actual height values of the bars, and a computer vision camera/algorithm collects and estimates the RGB value of the bars. From original and measured values datasets, bar charts images are built to perform a similarity comparison between the images. The similarity metric is used as an accuracy metric of the bar heights to represent data and obtained as initial results value higher than 96%. Furthermore, an evaluation scenario of the distance between the reference and measured colors (Delta E 2000) classifies most of them as having proper perception. Additionally, the accuracy loss was evaluated on data physicalization in a scenario of continuous use (ten configurations without any calibration), and the variation of errors was around 2%.

Synchrophasors are the state-of-the-art measuring sensors that sense voltage, current, or frequency with high data rate. This paper presents an approach to analyze the streaming smart-grid data generated by synchrophasors. A novel unit-circle representation is used to visualize the real-time phasor data. A Density based clustering (DBSCAN) method is proposed to cluster the phasor data to detect bad-data for classification, and identifying various fault anomalies. The paper uses datasets from an ieee 14 bus system test-bed to aid system operators in carrying various predictive analytics and decisions.

A 19 mm diameter prototype bioprosthetic valve mounted in a cardiac pulse duplicator was characterized using Doppler echocardiography and qualitative flow visualization at a heart rate of 72 bpm. Analysis of the flow visualization images revealed that the prototype and control valve leaflets open symmetrically but close asymmetrically. The asymmetry in the closing of the valves is likely due to the large pressure gradients across the valves and may have implications for the long term mechanical failure of the valves. The relatively high peak systolic velocity of 309.9 cm/s, which was measured in the prototype 19 mm valve, can be attributed to the small valve diameter and the high cardiac output used in the current study.

With the high-speed development of WEB 2.0, the number of web applications continues to grow, making users' behavior become increasingly complex and difficult to monitor. In this paper, we develop a new method for user's behavior characteristics visualization and special user identification. Firstly, we divide all the web applications into 12 kinds and each kind includes several specific applications. Based on this classification, we develop a hierarchical behavior spectrum to visualize the user's behavior easily and capture the user's behavior characteristics very well. Secondly, we develop a method by using KL Divergence theory to measure the similarity of different users' behavior and identify the special users whose behavior is pivotal for network management. The experimental results based on actual traffic traces show that the method proposed in this paper can visualize the users' behavior easily and the accuracy rate of the special user identification is over 75%.

An efficient information retrieval system should be able to provide search results which are in the same time relevant for the query but which cover different aspects, i.e., diverse, of it. In this paper we address the issue of image search result diversification. We propose a new hybrid approach that integrates both the automatization power of the machines and the intelligence of human observers via an optimized multiclass Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier-based relevance feedback (RF). In contrast to existing RF techniques which focus almost exclusively on improving the relevance of the results, the novelty of our approach is in considering in priority the diversification. We designed several diversification strategies which operate on top of the SVM RF and exploit the classifiers' output confidence scores. Experimental validation conducted on a publicly available image retrieval diversification dataset show the benefits of this approach which outperforms other state-of-the-art methods.

High performance scientific interactive visualization in post-processing deals with very large unstructured datasets from the outputs of simulations, which gradually slows down the system because of frequent memory allocation and release. In this paper, we implemented a cell mode of memory pool where one memory cell is allocated or released each time according to a given memory size. The results of test cases show that cases with memory pool techniques can effectively reduce memory fragmentation and fasten the data access speed. In finite element analysis, it can improve the operational efficiency about 20 times. In case study, seismic analysis of a junction box was conducted as an example to evaluate the advanced technologies of the finite element post-processing for large-scale structures.

When visualizing a 3-D electromagnetic field analysis result, physical quantity on a surface or a cross section of objects is visualized mostly. It is, however, desired to observe the physical quantity and the phenomenon inside the objects in 3-D space. In this paper, the method to visualize the physical quantity inside the objects with a volumetric display is proposed. The volumetric display is based on a stack of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), and developed to separately display the images on the LCDs. With the volumetric display, the physical quantity, which changes on different cross sections of the objects in 3-D, can be visualized simultaneously. The volumetric display is also used for image comparison. In order to compare the results of magnetic field analysis, usually each image is compared by overlappingly visualizing these. However, it is easy to visualize the images and compare these, using the volumetric display. The volumetric display is a useful tool for postprocessing of the electromagnetic field analysis.

Large software systems typically exist in many revisions. In order to analyze such systems, their evolution needs to be analyzed, too. The main challenge in this context is to cope with the large volume of data and to visualize the system and its evolution as a whole. This paper presents an approach for visualizing the evolution of large-scale systems which uses three different, tightly integrated visualizations that are 3-dimensional and/or animated and which support different analysis tasks. According to a first empirical study, all tasks are supported well by at least one visualization.
