Visualizing data in tables usually is not the best way to help users understanding large amounts of data. Instead, data visualization in graphical format, such as charts, has been used to explore available data. A good data visualization is defined as a well-designed presentation of interesting data, aiming to communicate ideas with clarity, precision and efficiency. Nowadays, considering the open data movement, many open data portals offer different types of data visualization. However, when browsing some of these portals, we can find many bad data visualizations, frequently ambiguous, confusing and unusable. Hence, it is essential to have an instrument capable of analyzing the quality of data visualizations, helping the designer to use the full capacity of a data visualization to provide a more efficient resource information to the users. This work aims to present an instrument that integrate a set of heuristics to assess the quality of data visualizations. Such heuristics were chosen due to have been previously proposed in several works in literature, and proved successful. To evaluate the proposed instrument, we conducted an experiment with a group composed by computer science graduate students. We analyzed the results using Cohen's Kappa and Any-two agreement statistical tests, which indicated that the instrument is adequate.

Code visualization presents a visual representation of the state of the code to support code comprehension activities. In addition to representing code elements (for example, methods, classes and packages) and relationships between them, previous studies of code visualization also represent metrics to indicate code smell. However, the metric value only shows vague symptoms in describing the code smell behind it. This study tries to visualize the code smell directly using detection strategies, which are formulation of one or more than one metric and its threshold value for each type of code smell. 'Smelly' elements are immediately shown in code visualization according to the predetermined detection strategies. 3D mushroom farm metaphor is a new metaphor proposed in this study for code visualization. Through code visualization in a familiar natural 3D environment, code properties are displayed in an attractive manner. The presented code properties are chosen by considering object-oriented paradigm key ideas. During this time, there has never been a fundamental reason as to why a specific property was chosen to be included in a code visualization metaphor. Therefore, this study questioned code properties visualized to participants of the evaluation: is the early comprehension of the code sufficient enough or should it be added /reduced. The evaluation results showed that the code smell that was immediately shown in the visualization could be captured by the user correctly. All evaluated participants managed to identify all the smelly elements. Broadly speaking, participants understood the purpose of visualization and agreed that code visualization with the 3D mushroom farm metaphor is intuitive and easy to use. All participants stated that they needed all code properties displayed in code visualization with the 3D mushroom farm metaphor, although there were participants who proposed several properties to be added to the visualization.

Complex product development is an interdisciplinary cooperative process with the characteristics of enormous quantity of engineering data, process uncertainty, frequent engineering changes and disturbances. Version management is a key part of engineering data management for conserving the consistency of design data and tracking engineering change orders. Therefore comprehensive mechanism is required to handle large mount of intermediate results in complex product design processes in order to achieve efficient information and knowledge management. A component based version management model across different design projects is designed, which implements efficient design processes and project data management in an integrated management system for aerodynamic design of aero turbine engine (IMS-DATE). Key version control technologies of version merge and visualization are also discussed. The new version model and related version control technologies proposed in this paper can well satisfy the requirements of complex engineering design projects and enhance design efficiency consequently.

Topic modeling is commonly used to analyze and understand large document collections. However, in practice, users want to focus on specific aspects or "targets" rather than the entire corpus. For example, given a large collection of documents, users may want only a smaller subset which more closely aligns with their interests, tasks, and domains. In particular, our paper focuses on large-scale document retrieval with high recall where any missed relevant documents can be critical. A simple keyword matching search is generally not effective nor efficient as 1) it is difficult to find a list of keyword queries that can cover the documents of interest before exploring the dataset, 2) some documents may not contain the exact keywords of interest but may still be highly relevant, and 3) some words have multiple meanings, which would result in irrelevant documents included in the retrieved subset. In this paper, we present TopicSifter, a visual analytics system for interactive search space reduction. Our system utilizes targeted topic modeling based on nonnegative matrix factorization and allows users to give relevance feedback in order to refine their target and guide the topic modeling to the most relevant results.

In this paper, we present an impression estimation method for television commercials with a visualization method. Our method estimates the impressions viewers might have of a new proposal for a TV commercial written in text as weighted favorable factors and visualizes the estimated favorable factors. During the production of TV commercials, it is important to create commercials that clearly communicate the intended messages to viewers. Currently, some agents conduct questionnaire surveys regarding favorable factors for TV commercials. The surveys are being utilized for the production of commercials to meet viewer expectations. If it is possible to estimate the impressions viewers might have of a television commercial before it is broadcast, the producers will be able to quickly make television commercials according to their intentions and based on the estimated impressions. Using our method, and based on the questionnaire survey data of favorable factors for past TV commercials, this system can estimate and visualize the favorable factors as impressions of a new proposal for a TV commercial.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is used for functional connectivity analysis, and can record brain signals from deep sources non-invasively. Modern MEG systems measure signals at a temporal resolution of milliseconds and at millimeter precision. However, there is a lack of standardization in the position and orientation of sensors, unlike the electroencephalography (EEG) that follows sensor positioning guidelines defined by international 10-20 10-10 or 10-5 systems. Mapping MEG sensor positioning to EEG's is essential to enable data fusion and comparison of both modalities. This paper reports the development of a novel framework for MEG data visualization and analysis. The strength of the proposed framework is demonstrated through input of sizeable data from multiple healthy subjects and generating default mode connectivity visualization from the most common and significantly active coherent brain regions.

We present a ParaViewWeb based visual analytics application running on large high-resolution display supporting standard mouse and keyboard interaction. The application relies on SAGE2 for user interaction and multi-display visualization. We also employ a scalable middleware system called "Cloudberry" that allows users to interactively query and analyze large amounts of temporal and spatial data stored on a back end Apache AsterixDB store to enable big data analytics and interactive visualization. Our Visual Analyzing Billion Tweets application shows interactive query and visualization of result from over a billion twitter feeds streamed in real-time to the back end Apache AsterixDB. In our setup, we ran the visual analytics application on a large high-resolution display with a 24-tiled display in a 6 x 4 configuration. We also run a comparative study of the application running on a single 24 inch display and the 24-tiled display with some very interesting findings supporting the benefit of using large high-resolution display for visual analytics.

In this work, we study a visual data mining problem: Given a set of discovered overlapping submatrices of interest, how can we order the rows and columns of the data matrix to best display these submatrices and their relationships'? We find this problem can be converted to the hypergraph ordering problem, which generalizes the traditional minimal linear arrangement (or graph ordering) problem and their we are able to prove the NP-hardness of this problem. We propose a novel iterative algorithm which utilize the existing graph ordering algorithm to solve the optimal visualization problem. This algorithm can always converge to a local minimum. Pie detailed experimental evaluation using a set of publicly available transactional datasets demonstrates the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed algorithm,

Frequent itemset mining plays an essential role in the mining of many different patterns. Most existing frequent itemset mining algorithms return the mined results-namely, frequent itemsets - in the form of textual lists. However the use of visual representation can enhance the user understanding of the inherent relations in a collection of frequent itemsets. In this paper we propose an effective visualizer called WiFIsViz, to display the mined frequent itemsets. WiFIsViz provides users with an overview and details about the itemsets. Moreover, this visualizer is also equipped with several interactive features for effective visualization of the frequent iteinsets mined from various real-life applications.
