Painting collections from the old masters are valuable cultural heritage of human history. Their artistic styles can be generally determined by their art periods. From analyzing and visualizing the relationships of different artistic styles, information can be found to facilitate art history studies. In this paper, we propose a Self-organizing Map (SOM) based framework specifically for analyzing and visualizing the relationships among painting collections from artistic perspectives. In our framework, we first define a set of image features based on artistic concepts used in art criticism;then a SOM-based hierarchical model is used to analyze features extracted from individual artists' painting collections. For our experiments, we obtain painting collections of six painting masters representing three art movements: postimpressionism, cubism and renaissance. An interactive web interface is also built to present our artistic influence analysis results. Through our experimental results, styles of different painting collections and their influential relationships can be analyzed and visualized from artistic perspectives.

IT in the civil engineering curriculum is often fragmented into courses that emphasize either design tools (e.g., CAD), or packages for analysis, planning and modeling. Graduating students often report a lack of coherence in the IT tools used in their courses and a distinctive gap in their junior years where technology skills are under-used or forgotten. Building information Modeling (BIND may offer the opportunity to unify disparate technologies to provide a coherent IT skill set for civil engineering students to address the range of problems in the infrastructure and facilities life cycle. BIM is a framework that combines visualization and parametric modeling in a way that allows students to simultaneously consider the interdependent processes of planning, analysis, design and construction. This research will evaluate the feasibility of embedding BIM in the civil engineering curriculum with the goal of defining and promoting an extensible skill set that is reinforced through a comprehensive transportation design problem.

Magnetoencephalography (MEG) is used for functional connectivity analysis, and can record brain signals from deep sources non-invasively. Modern MEG systems measure signals at a temporal resolution of milliseconds and at millimeter precision. However, there is a lack of standardization in the position and orientation of sensors, unlike the electroencephalography (EEG) that follows sensor positioning guidelines defined by international 10-20 10-10 or 10-5 systems. Mapping MEG sensor positioning to EEG's is essential to enable data fusion and comparison of both modalities. This paper reports the development of a novel framework for MEG data visualization and analysis. The strength of the proposed framework is demonstrated through input of sizeable data from multiple healthy subjects and generating default mode connectivity visualization from the most common and significantly active coherent brain regions.

Nowadays user-generated content is growing in a digital world, where many individuals can post texts about various products in order to express their feedback. Reviews about products are critical as they guide others to use it or not which affect the production profit, and popularity. Amazon is one of the companies that provide reviews of users regarding all its products. Since reviews are textual and varying;an interactive representation would be supportive to users through summarizing opinions and providing feedback. In this paper, a visual analytics tool proposed;as a dashboard;a user-friendly analysis of books' reviews on Amazon. Interactive Packed bubbles, Linear chart, Stacked bars, and Word-cloud are four visualization techniques incorporated together enabling users to explore relationships between multiple objectives at the same time in an interactive manner. Besides, visual sentiment analysis of opinions extracted from the user reviews of books whether positive, neutral or negative is provided to support users' decision.

Online technical forums are valuable sources for mining useful software engineering information. LDA (Latent Dirichlet Allocation) is an unsupervised machine learning method which can be used for extracting underlying topics out of such large forums. However, the main output of LDA forum learning are usually huge matrices that contain millions of numbers, which is impossible for researchers to directly scrutinize the numerical distribution and semantically evaluate the relationship between the extracted topics and large collection of unorganized documents. In this paper, we present LDAAnalyzer, an LDA visualization tool that makes the hidden topic-document structures rise to the surface. From the functionality point of view, LDAAnalyzer consists of (1) LDA modeling (2) LDA output analysis and (3) new corpus training. With the help of LDAAnalyzer, our semantic topic-modeling evaluation based on large technical forums becomes feasible.

The Network for Computational Nanotechnology (NCN) has developed a science gateway at *** for nanotechnology education and research. Remote users can browse through online seminars and courses, and launch Sophisticated nanotechnology simulation tools, all within their web browser. Simulations are supported by a middleware that can route complex jobs to grid supercomputing resources. But what is truly unique about the middleware is the way that it uses hardware accelerated graphics to support both problem setup and result visualization. This paper describes the design and integration of a remote visualization framework into the nanoHUB for interactive visual analytics of nanotechnology simulations. Our services flexibly handle a variety of nanoscience simulations, render them utilizing graphics hardware acceleration in a scalable manner, and deliver them seamlessly through the middleware to the user. Rendering is done only on-demand, as needed, so each graphics hardware unit can simultaneously support many user sessions. Additionally, a novel node distribution scheme further improves our system's scalability. Our approach is not only efficient but also cost-effective. Only a half-dozen render nodes are anticipated to support hundreds of active tool sessions on the nanoHUB. Moreover, this architecture and visual analytics environment provides capabilities that can serve many areas of scientific simulation and analysis beyond nanotechnology with its ability to interactively analyze and visualize multivariate scalar and vector fields.

Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are rapidly gaining popularity in various critical domains like health care, critical infrastructure, and climate monitoring, where application builders have diversified development needs. Independent of the functionalities provided by the WSN applications, many of the developers use visualization, simulation, and programming tools. However, these tools are designed as separate stand-alone applications, which force developers to use multiple tools. This situation often poses confusion and hampers an efficient development experience. To avoid the complexity of using multiple tools, we have designed a new extensible, multi-platform, scalable, and open-source framework called PROVIZ, which is an integrated visualization and programming framework. In this paper, we explain the various features of PROVIZ's visualization and programming framework and discuss how PROVIZ can be used as a visual debugging tool to aid in providing a software fix.

We present a method for real-time stereo scene capture and remote VR visualization that allows a human operator to freely move their head and thus intuitively control their perspective during teleoperation. The stereo camera is mounted on a 6D robotic arm, which follows the operator's head pose. Existing VR teleoperation systems either induce high latencies on head movements, leading to motion sickness, or use scene reconstruction methods to allow re-rendering of the scene from different perspectives, which cannot handle dynamic scenes effectively. Instead, we present a decoupled approach which renders captured camera images as spheres, assuming constant distance. This allows very fast re-rendering on head pose changes while keeping the resulting temporary distortions during head translations small. We present qualitative examples, quantitative results in the form of lab experiments and a small user study, showing that our method outperforms other visualization methods.

With the development of the Internet and social networking service, the micro-video is becoming more popular, especially for youngers. However, for many users, they spend a lot of time to get their favorite micro-videos from amounts videos on the Internet;for the micro-video producers, they do not know what kinds of viewers like their products. Therefore, this paper proposes a micro-video recommendation system. The recommendation algorithms are the core of this system. Traditional recommendation algorithms include content-based recommendation, collaboration recommendation algorithms, and so on. At the Bid Data times, the challenges what we meet are data scale, performance of computing, and other aspects. Thus, this paper improves the traditional recommendation algorithms, using the popular parallel computing framework to process the Big Data. Slope one recommendation algorithm is a parallel computing algorithm based on MapReduce and Hadoop framework which is a high performance parallel computing platform. The other aspect of this system is data visualization. Only an intuitive, accurate visualization interface, the viewers and producers can find what they need through the micro-video recommendation system.

In the past decade, a lot of research work has been conducted to support collaborative visualization among remote users over the networks, allowing them to visualize and manipulate shared data for problem solving. There are many applications of collaborative visualization, such as oceanography, meteorology and medical science. To facilitate user interaction, a critical system requirement for collaborative visualization is to ensure that remote users will perceive a synchronized view of the shared data. Failing this requirement, the user's ability in performing the desirable collaborative tasks will be affected. In this paper, we propose a synchronization method to support collaborative visualization. It considers how interaction with dynamic objects is perceived by application participants under the existence of network latency, and remedies the motion trajectory of the dynamic objects. It also handles the false positive and false negative collision detection problems. The new method is particularly well designed for handling content changes due to unpredictable user interventions or object collisions. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through a number of experiments.
