Event-based egocentric dynamic networks are an important class of networks widely seen in many domains. In this paper, we present a visual analytics approach for these networks by combining data-driven network simplifications with a novel visualization design - EgoNetCloud. In particular, an integrated data processing pipeline is proposed to prune, compress and filter the networks into smaller but salient abstractions. To accommodate the simplified network into the visual design, we introduce a constrained graph layout algorithm on the dynamic network. Through a real-life case study as well as conversations with the domain expert, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the EgoNetCloud design and system in completing analysis tasks on event-based dynamic networks. The user study comparing EgoNetCloud with a working system on academic search confirms the effectiveness and convenience of our visual analytics based approach.

Music visualization provides users with a new interface to browse, search, and navigate their personal digital music collection. Although there are several previous works on visualizing a music collection based on some "surface" musical metadata, such as artist, album and genre, there has been few works on content-based or perception-based visualizations. In this paper, we we developed an algorithm to automatically estimate human perceptions on rhythm and timbre of a music clip. Then, based on these two valves, each music clip is mapped into a 2D (timber-rhythm) space. Thus a 2D perception-based visualization is built. Experimental evaluation indicates that this kind visualization is efficiently helpful in many cases of music management manipulations, such as music navigation, similar music search and music play list generation.

This paper presents TweeVist, a geo-tweet visualization system to support users grasp event happens over time and space from tweets while they browse any web pages based on spatio-temporal analysis. TweeVist presents a tag cloud of tweets in different time periods are associated with web pages based on detected events. In order to detect events, the system extracts normal events (e.g., crowded restaurants, crowded facilities in Walt Disney World) happen at anytime and anywhere by utilizing machine learning algorithms, and it also extracts unusual or special events (e.g., time sales, disasters) by comparing current situation to those normal regularities. Thus, TweeVist can effectively visualize a summary of tweets in a tag cloud to help users immediately gain a quick overview of current situation or events through time and space while they browse a web page, and it can also effectively present a list of most related tweets to help users easily obtain more detailed information. Furthermore, TweeVist provides a communication function, which allows users to chat with other users who browse the same web pages, or Twitter users who follow an account of TweeVist.

In this work we address the problem of retrieving potentially interesting matrix views to support the exploration of networks. We introduce Matrix Diagnostics (or MAGNOSTICS), following in spirit related approaches for rating and ranking other visualization techniques, such as Scagnostics for scatter plots. Our approach ranks matrix views according to the appearance of specific visual patterns, such as blocks and lines, indicating the existence of topological motifs in the data, such as clusters, bi-graphs, or central nodes. MAGNOSTICS can be used to analyze, query, or search for visually similar matrices in large collections, or to assess the quality of matrix reordering algorithms. While many feature descriptors for image analyzes exist, there is no evidence how they perform for detecting patterns in matrices. In order to make an informed choice of feature descriptors for matrix diagnostics, we evaluate 30 feature descriptors-27 existing ones and three new descriptors that we designed specifically for MAGNOSTICS-with respect to four criteria: pattern response, pattern variability, pattern sensibility, and pattern discrimination. We conclude with an informed set of six descriptors as most appropriate for MAGNOSTICS and demonstrate their application in two scenarios;exploring a large collection of matrices and analyzing temporal networks.

Recent sequencing technology breakthroughs have resulted in a dramatic increase in the amount of available sequencing data, enabling major scientific advances in biology and medicine. Nowadays, sequencing transcriptome data of single cells (scRNA-seq) are growing rapidly, posing new challenges in their analysis, mostly due to their high dimensionality. In this paper, we study the problem of visualizing such high-dimensional scRNA-seq data. A new visualization scheme is presented based on a customized distance matrix retrieved by applying independently Nearest Neighbors search through multiple Random Projections. The proposed method is compared against well-known dimensionality reduction and visualization techniques showing its capabilities and performance.

The paper presents a set of combined techniques to enhance the real-time visualization of simple or complex molecules (up to order of 106 atoms) space fill mode. The proposed approach includes an innovative technique for efficient computation and storage of ambient occlusion terms, a small set of GPU accelerated procedural impostors for space-fill and ball-and-stick rendering, and novel edge-cueing techniques. As a result, the user's understanding of the three-dimensional structure under inspection is strongly increased (even for still images), while the rendering still occurs in real time.

An approach to analyzing Streaming Big Data as it comes in while maintaining the proper context of past events is to employ contiguous visualizations with an increasingly aggressive aggregation degree. This allows for the most recent data to be displayed in detail, while older data is shown in an aggregated form according to how long ago it was received. However, the transitions applied between visualizations with different aggregations must not compromise the understandability of the data flow. Particularly, new data should be perceived considering the context established by older data, and the visualizations should not be perceived as independent or unconnected. In this paper, we present the first study on transitions between two contiguous visualizations, focusing on time series data. We developed several animated transitions between a scatter plot, where all data points are individually represented as they arrive, and other visualizations where data is displayed in an aggregated form. We then conducted a user evaluation to assess the most appealing and effective transitions that allow for the best comprehension of the displayed data for each visualization pair.
