Many networks nowadays contain both positive and negative relationships, such as ratings and conflicts, which are often mixed in the layouts of network visualization represented by the layouts of node-link diagram and node indices of matrix representation. In this work, we present a visual analysis framework for visualizing signed networks through emphasizing different effects of signed edges on network topologies. The theoretical foundation of the visual analysis framework comes from the spectral analysis of data patterns in the high-dimensional spectral space. Based on the spectral analysis results, we present a block-organized visualization approach in the hybrid form of matrix, node-link, and arc diagrams with the focus on revealing topological structures of signed networks. We demonstrate with a detailed case study that block-organized visualization and spectral space exploration can be combined to analyze topologies of signed networks effectively.

CNN image classifiers are widely used, thanks to their efficiency and accuracy However, they can suffer from biases that impede their practical applications. Most existing bias investigation techniques are either inapplicable to general image classification tasks or require significant user efforts in perusing all data subgroups to manually specify which data attributes to inspect. We present VISCUIT, an interactive visualization system that reveals how and why a CNN classifier is biased. VISCUIT visually summarizes the subgroups on which the classifier underperforms and helps users discover and characterize the cause of the underperformances by revealing image concepts responsible for activating neurons that contribute to misclassifications. VisCUIT runs in modern browsers and is opensource, allowing people to easily access and extend the tool to other model architectures and datasets. VISCUIT is available at the following public demo link: https://***/VisCUIT. A video demo is available at https://***/eNDbSyM4R_4.

We present a visualization tool to enhance situation awareness for Global Argus, a system that tracks and detects indications and warnings of biological events in near real time. Because Global Argus generates massive amounts of data daily, its analysts often struggle to interpret the information. To overcome this problem, we have developed the Global Argus Situation Awareness Tool (GASAT) using the InteleView/World Wind geographical information system. This tool allows users to visualize cur-rent and past events in a particular region, and thus to understand how events evolve over time. Combined with the other tools that we are developing, GASAT will contribute to enhanced situation awareness in the tracking and detection of biological events.

Cortical mapping is widely employed to define the sensorimotor area and delineate the central sulcus (CS) during awake craniotomies. The approach involves the gold standard somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) recorded with electrocorticogram (ECoG) strip electrodes. However, the evoked response can be misconstrued from the manual peak interpretation due to the poor spatial resolution of the strip electrode or when the electrode does not precisely cover the desired cortical area. This can lead to unintentional damage to the eloquent cortex. We present a soft real-time computer based visualization system that uses recorded SSEPs with a subdural grid to aid in cortical mapping. The neural data during electrical stimulation of the median nerve at 0.6Hz are picked up with a bio-amplifier at 2.4kHz. The stimulation artifact recorded from the bipolar electromyogram (EMG) is used as the stimulation onset. The ECoG data are assessed online with MATLAB Simulink to process and visualize the SSEPs waveform. The visualization system is programmed to display the SSEPs peak activation as a heat map on a 2D grid and projected onto a screen, showcasing the nature of the cortical activities over the contact surface area. Since the grid occupies a large cortical surface, the heatmap is able to delineate the central sulcus. The map can be viewed at any time point along the SSEP trace without the need for peak interpretation. With the goal to provide additional information during cortical mapping and facilitate interpretation of ECoG grid data, we believe that this visualization system will aid in rapid definition of the sensorimotor area during surgical planning.

Monitoring of country maritime border is an important task of the Border Guard. This activity can be enhanced with the use of the technology enabling gathering information from distributed sources, processing of that information and its visualization. The system presented in the paper is an advancement of the previously developed distributed map data exchange system. The added functionality allows to supplement the map data with multimedia (telephone and radio calls, video (cameras), photos, files, SMS) and presentation of current and archival situation on a multidisplay screen in the Events visualization Post. The performance tests, and in particular the measurement of waiting times for responses, show that the biggest influence on the Center server delays is the handling of messages regarding visualization of traveled routes. Therefore, it was decided to optimize the way of visualization of traveled routes on digital maps in order to reduce the amount of overload of the Center. The main focus of this article is a description of the concept of a new method of visualization of traveled routes and a new way of retrieving data on traveled routes. In addition, the paper sets further direction for the development of the STRADAR system, such as visualization of radar data from a new type of radar devices, control of cameras at observation points, monitoring of system components, and more.

3D representations are potentially useful under many circumstances, but suffer from long known perception and interaction challenges. Current immersive technologies, which combine stereoscopic displays and natural interaction, are being progressively seen as an opportunity to tackle this issue, but new guidelines and studies are still needed, especially regarding informationvisualization. Many proposed approaches are impractical for actual usage, resulting in user discomfort or requiring too much time or space. In this work, we implement and evaluate an alternative data exploration metaphor where the user remains seated and viewpoint change is only realisable through physical movements. All manipulation is done directly by natural mid-air gestures, with the data being rendered at arm's reach. The virtual reproduction of the analyst's desk aims to increase immersion and enable tangible interaction with controls and two dimensional associated information. A comparative user study was carried out against a desktop-based equivalent, exploring a set of 9 perception and interaction tasks based on previous literature and a multidimensional projection use case. We demonstrate that our prototype setup, named VirtualDesk, presents excellent results regarding user comfort and immersion, and performs equally or better in all analytical tasks, while adding minimal or no time overhead and amplifying user subjective perceptions of efficiency and engagement. Results are also contrasted to a previous experiment employing artificial flying navigation, with significant observed improvements.

Especially within Grid infrastructures driven by high-performance computing (HPC), collaborative online visualization and steering (COVS) has become an important technique to dynamically steer the parameters of a parallel simulation or to just share the outcome of simulations via visualizations with geographically dispersed collaborators. In earlier work, we have presented a COVS framework reference implementation based on the UNICORE Grid middleware used within DEISA. This paper lists current limitations of the COVS framework design and implementation related to missing fine-grained authorization capabilities that are required during collaborative COVS sessions. Such capabilities use end-user information about roles, project membership, or participation in a dedicated Virtual Organization (VO). We outline solutions and present a design and implementation of our architecture extension that uses attribute authorities such as the recently developed Virtual Organization Membership Service (VOMs) based on the Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML).

Plethora of software tools are available for inference and visualization of Gene Regulatory Networks (GRN) with their relative strengths and weaknesses. System and computational biologists quite often find it difficult to select a candidate tool for their experimentation. In this paper we present a comprehensive study on some of the promising and influential software tools developed so far for in-silico reconstruction and visualization of GRN. We discuss the features of each tool, the underlying technology used along with their relative merits and limitations. Researchers normally use synthetic gene expression data for evaluation and validation of GRN methods. We also discuss various synthetic data generators and tools that support benchmarking against gold standards like DREAM challenge data. Finally, we suggest few important issues that may be helpful for the development of effective inference and visualization softwares.

Studies have found conflicting results regarding the effectiveness of tube-like structures for representing 3D flow data. This paper presents the findings of a small-scale pilot study contrasting static monoscopic depth cues to ascertain their importance in perceiving the orientation of a three-dimensional glyph with respect to a cutting plane. A simple striped texture and shading were found to reduce judgement errors when used with a 3D tube glyph as compared to plain or shaded line glyphs. A discussion of considerations for a full-scale study and possible future work follows.

Mixed Reality commonly refers to the merging of real and virtual worlds to produce new visualization environments where physical and digital objects co-exist and interact in real time. Mixed Reality can also be used for fusing sensor data into the existing user interface to efficiently improve situation awareness, to facilitate the understanding of surrounding environment, and to predict the future status. The work presented in this paper fuses and then represents the real video and complementary information into one single Mixed Reality interface. A simulation platform to test the Mixed Reality interface for teleoperation is also discussed in this paper.
