We present Intentable, a mixed-initiative caption authoring system that allows the author to steer an automatic caption generation process to reflect their intent, e.g., the finding that the author gained from visualization and thus wants to write a caption for. We first derive a grammar for specifying the intent, i.e., a caption recipe, and build a neural network that generates caption sentences given a recipe. Our quantitative evaluation revealed that our intent-based generation system not only allows the author to engage in the generation process but also produces more fluent captions than the previous end-to-end approaches without user intervention. Finally, we demonstrate the versatility of our system, such as context adaptation, unit conversion, and sentence reordering.

This paper presents guitARhero, an Augmented Reality application for interactively teaching guitar playing to beginners through responsive visualizations overlaid on the guitar neck. We support two types of visual guidance, a highlighting of the frets that need to be pressed and a 3D hand overlay, as well as two display scenarios, one using a desktop magic mirror and one using a video see-through head-mounted display. We conducted a user study with 20 participants to evaluate how well users could follow instructions presented with different guidance and display combinations and compare these to a baseline where users had to follow video instructions. Our study highlights the trade-off between the provided information and visual clarity affecting the user's ability to interpret and follow instructions for fine-grained tasks. We show that the perceived usefulness of instruction integration into an HMD view highly depends on the hardware capabilities and instruction details.

The emergence of large-scale AI models, like GPT-4, has significantly impacted academia and industry, driving the demand for high-performance computing (HPC) to accelerate workloads. To address this, we present HPC(2)lusterScape, a visualization system that enhances the efficiency and transparency of shared HPC clusters for large-scale AI models. HPC(2)lusterScape provides a comprehensive overview of system-level (e.g., partitions, hosts, and workload status) and application-level (e.g., identification of experiments and researchers) information, allowing HPC operators and machine learning researchers to monitor resource utilization and identify issues through customizable violation rules. The system includes diagnostic tools to investigate workload imbalances and synchronization bottlenecks in large-scale distributed deep learning experiments. Deployed in industrial-scale HPC clusters, HPC(2)lusterScape incorporates user feedback and meets specific requirements. This paper outlines the challenges and prerequisites for efficient HPC operation, introduces the interactive visualization system, and highlights its contributions in addressing pain points and optimizing resource utilization in shared HPC clusters.

Tomato presence is a term coined by Owlchemy Labs to refer to the observation that players of their game Job Simulator can experience 'hand presence' over an object that is not their hand. When playing the game, if a player grabs an object, their virtual hand disappears leaving the grabbed object. While players still observe a direct proprioceptive match between their hand movements and the object being manipulated, it seems that there should be a conflict with current theories of how users might react to visual/proprioceptive mismatch of their embodiment. We run a hand ownership experiment where we implement standard object grasp and the disappearing hand grasp. We show that on a body-ownership questionnaire there is evidence to support the notion that users still feel ownership over a virtual hand even though it is periodically disappearing. We also confirm that most users do not report that their hand disappeared.
