Stereoelectroencephalography (SEEG) is a neurosurgical method to survey electrophysiological activity within the brain to treat disorders such as Epilepsy. In this stereotactic approach, leads are implanted through straight trajectories to survey both cortical and sub-cortical activity. Visualizing the recorded locations covering sulcal and gyral activity while staying true to the cortical architecture is challenging due to the folded, three-dimensional nature of the human cortex. To overcome this challenge, we developed a novel visualization concept, allowing investigators to dynamically morph between the subjects' cortical reconstruction and an inflated cortex representation. This inflated view, in which gyri and sulci are viewed on a smooth surface, allows better visualization of electrodes buried within the sulcus while staying true to the underlying cortical architecture. Clinical relevance- These visualization techniques might also help guide clinical decision-making when defining seizure onset zones or resections for patients undergoing SEEG monitoring for intractable epilepsy.

The use of informationvisualization techniques and research into genetics have greatly improved knowledge in medicine, health, animal breeding, and even in commerce itself. The data is often complex in structure and difficult to understand. Researchers have obtained patterns and knowledge about these data, and with this, the processes of discovery about drugs for diseases, improvement in the cultivation of crops, and in animal breeding itself for a better yield in each of these areas. The goal is, through a tool with visualization techniques, to assist in the monitoring of genetic improvement in fish breeding belonging to the genetics laboratory of a partner university. The requirements survey was carried out with Ph.D. and Ph.D. students in the Aquaculture area.

Understanding the focus and visual scanning behavior of users during a collaborative activity in a distributed environment can be helpful in improving users' engagement. Eye tracking measures can provide informative cues to understanding human visual search behavior. In this study, we present a distributed eye-tracking system with a gaze analytics dashboard. This system extracts eye movements from multiple participants utilizing common off-the-shelf eye trackers, generates real-time traditional positional gaze measures and advanced gaze measures such as ambient-focal coefficient K, and displays them in an interactive dashboard. We evaluate the proposed methodology by developing a gaze analytics dashboard and conducting a pilot study to (1) investigate the relationship between K with collaborative behavior, and (2) compare it against the User Experience Questionnaire (UEQ) benchmark. Our results show that groups that spent more time had more ambient attention, and our dashboard has a higher overall impression compared to the UEQ benchmark.

The solution space of an optimization problem consists of all its feasible solutions. In this work, we present a systematic literature review on the application of informationvisualization (IV) techniques for understanding and exploring such solution spaces. The review was conducted on several search databases, and we identified 264 papers that satisfied our inclusion criteria. A performance filter was applied to these papers, and we further analyzed and extracted data from 65 of them. Our analysis shows that there are a variety of solution space visualization approaches and provides useful references to support further studies on the subject.

Robotic solutions are being deployed in industry to perform increasingly challenging maintenance and inspection tasks. In many industrial applications, robots can encounter uncertainties that prevent task completion, potentially resulting in unexpected costs and unsafe working conditions. Supervised autonomy allows personnel to intervene and assist in negotiating these challenging situations. Augmented Reality (AR) allows for the visualization of complex robotic sensor data and provides an opportunity for non-expert users to interact with it in a natural and intuitive manner. We present a comprehensive AR application module-Augmented Reality-Situational Task Accept and Repair (AR-STAR)-that allows users to visualize LiDAR point cloud data along with sensor images and navigational goals. AR-STAR enables users to interact with LiDAR point clouds and modify them in real time. We developed and evaluated three interaction modalities that enable users to manipulate point cloud data in situ while observing the data superimposed on the physical environment. Demonstrated in a human-robot teaming scenario where tasked to identify and repair surface corrosion in a simulated industrial setting, we evaluate AR-STAR with pilot studies to determine the preferred interaction modality based on user workload, system usability, and task completion time to improve non-expert human-robot interactions in industrial settings.

Scientific visualizations using physically-based lighting models play a crucial role in enhancing both image quality and realism. In the domain of medical visualization, this trend has gained significant traction under the term cinematic rendering (CR). It enables the creation of 3D photorealistic reconstructions from medical data, offering great potential for aiding healthcare professionals in the analysis and study of volumetric datasets. However, the adoption of such advanced rendering for immersive virtual reality (VR) faces two main limitations related to their high computational demands. First, these techniques are frequently used to produce pre-recorded videos and offline content, thereby restricting interactivity to pre-defined volume appearance and lighting settings. Second, when deployed in head-tracked VR environments they can induce cyber-sickness symptoms due to the disturbing flicker caused by noisy Monte Carlo renderings. Consequently, the scope for meaningful interactive operations is constrained in this modality, in contrast with the versatile capabilities of classical direct volume rendering (DVR). In this work, we introduce an immersive 3D medical visualization system capable of producing photorealistic and fully interactive stereoscopic visualizations on head-mounted display (HMD) devices. Our approach extends previous linear regression denoising to enable real-time stereoscopic cinematic rendering within AR/VR settings. We demonstrate the capabilities of the resulting VR system, like its interactive rendering, appearance and transfer function editing.
