Coastal lagoons serve as highly productive ecosystems, delivering essential ecosystem services contributing to human welfare and well-being. Unfortunately, these intricate systems are particularly vulnerable to climatic and anthropogenic pressures, such as intensive agriculture and extensive urbanization. This paper presents a Digital Twin prototype of the Mar Menor lagoon in Spain, that utilizes environmental data collected from sensors and predicted data generated through machine learning algorithms. It covers the prototype's architecture, the corresponding API layer designed for interoperability with other systems, and its data visualization dashboard aimed at enhancing decision-making processes.

Observation of precipitation changes is important for a variety of purposes such as predicting river levels. Previous studies for data visualization of precipitation and river water levels plotted graphs and color bars were many stations on a map. Instead of such visualizations on a map, we construct a graph to imitate a connected structure such as a tributary of a river in this study. Our method displays two pseudo-coloring sparklines at nodes of the graph as the stations. The method can visualize the time difference between the increase in precipitation upstream and the increase in river water level downstream. Users can observe precipitation and river water levels at different observation points. Our method uses a Delaunay diagram connecting gauging positions to interpolate and calculate precipitation at river level observation points. This avoids the discrepancy between observation *** addition, we adjust the amount of visualized information by skipping the display of several observation points based on the similarity of the timeseries data at each station, which is calculated by applying the dynamic time-stretching method. The visualization results show that downstream, once the water level rises, it tends to take longer for the water level to drop. In addition, the results show that a time lag occurs between the increase in precipitation and the rise in river levels in the mainstream, while tributaries have little time lag. In addition, data on rainfall and river levels at the same station over multiple periods and their relationship are plotted as scatter plots. The scatter plots make it easier to compare data from multiple periods at the same time than two-tone pseudo coloring sparklines.

We present a novel, network- and browser-based visualization of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). The NGSS are meant to guide (USA) K-12 science and engineering learning and are almost always presented using text and tables. Understanding, explaining and navigating the NGSS through tables and text, however, is difficult. In this paper we present a different approach, namely one that capitalizes on the explicit network structure of the NGSS. By rendering the NGSS and its parts as interactive, visual networks, the NGSS becomes much easier to comprehend and navigate. In addition, whereas representing the NGSS with tables and texts hides patterns and anomalies, network visualization makes them prominently stand out.

Extended Reality (XR) technologies have opened new possibilities for image visualization in healthcare, but eliciting user requirements for XR development is challenging. Human-computer interaction can help obtain User Mental Models, mostly unexplored in XR for health. An ongoing project aims to address this gap by studying the skills and backgrounds of radiologists and surgeons using the same XR tool in Preoperative Surgical Planning for Complex Malformations through elucidating mental model, performing technical review and proposing Potential Interaction Models or Interaction Concepts. The work aims to contribute insights for designing more intuitive, immersive medical visualization tools.

Visual analysis (VA) tasks often involve exploring large and complex multi-dimensional datasets to identify trends and anomalies. However, the challenge lies in displaying all the data and maintaining the desired level of detail within the limited screen space. In this paper, we propose a solution that incorporates multiple visualizations and semantic zooming to address this compromise. Our visualization tool focuses on cycle-dependent data, showcasing time series with repetitive behavior. Through semantic zooming, cyclic time series data can be displayed in large quantities and high levels of detail without the need for multiple views. Our proposed tool includes three independent visualizations: line plots, horizon graphs, and adaptive heatmaps. By offering different visualization options, we aim to provide a rich and flexible analytical experience that response to the different user needs and encourages comprehensive data exploration. The tool accommodates both novice and expert users, allowing for intuitive analysis as well as advanced techniques for detailed examination. Our approach follows the mantra of "overview first, zoom and filter, then details-on-demand" facilitating rapid detection and exploration of patterns and trends. In this paper, we present the detailed design, interaction capabilities with semantic zoom, and the results of a user study that demonstrate the effectiveness and usefulness of our proposed tool.

In recent years, there has been an urgent need to improve safety and efficiency to avoid dangerous situations. In this paper, the authors proposes a visualization system of near-future information by augmented reality (AR) to avoid dangerous situations. The proposed system utilizes the position and speed information of the user and obstacles, predicts crashes, and recommends avoidance actions such as changing course or stopping. Experiments were conducted under different conditions by the implemented system to determine how many seconds into the future it would be safer for the user and easier to take avoidance action. The experiment results showed that the avoidance rate was almost the same for 2 seconds or longer, but the best rate was for 3 seconds ahead.

Creating Computer Vision (CV) models remains a complex practice, despite their ubiquity. Access to data, the requirement for ML expertise, and model opacity are just a few points of complexity that limit the ability of end-users to build, inspect, and improve these models. Interactive ML perspectives have helped address some of these issues by considering a teacher in the loop where planning, teaching, and evaluating tasks take place. We present and evaluate two interactive visualizations in the context of Sprite, a system for creating CV classification and detection models for images originating from videos. We study how these visualizations help Sprite's users identify (evaluate) and select (plan) images where a model is struggling and can lead to improved performance, compared to a baseline condition where users used a query language. We found that users who had used the visualizations found more images across a wider set of potential types of model errors.

Social networks are the fabric of society and the subject of frequent visual analysis. Closed triads represent triangular relationships between three people in a social network and are significant for understanding inherent interconnections and influence within the network. The most common methods for representing social networks (node-link diagrams and adjacency matrices) are not optimal for understanding triangles. We propose extending the adjacency matrix form to 3D for better visualization of network triads. We design a 3D matrix reordering technique and implement an immersive interactive system to assist in visualizing and analyzing closed triads in social networks. The evaluations demonstrate that our method provides substantial added value over node-link diagrams in improving the efficiency and accuracy of manipulating and understanding the social network triads.
The informationvisualization research community commonly produces supporting software to demonstrate technical contributions to the field. However, developing this software tends to be an overwhelming task. The final...

COVID-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. It was first detected in China in December 2019. It spreads between people in close contact. On the 11(th) March 2020 the WHO declared the outbreak of the virus as a pandemic, which signaled a significant acceleration in the global response to the COVID-19 outbreak, and recognized the widespread transmission of the virus across multiple countries and continents. Data regarding COVID-19 was gathered and made available for open access. These data sources offer invaluable information for tracking, raising awareness and understanding of COVID-19, recognizing its impact, as well as informing the general public, health authorities, policy makers, situation managers and decision makers. However, COVID-19 data in its raw form is complex and difficult to understand and analyze. The application of visualization together with human factor design principles in a complex systems framework provides an effective means for exploiting these big and complex datasets. These techniques can transform such inherently non-visual data into intuitive visual forms that enable users to gain insight into, and understanding of, information contained within the data. This paper discusses the application of visualization and development of interactive dashboards, set in a complex systems framework, to provide an effective means for the users to explore, analyze and gain awareness of the situation, thus enabling informed decision making.
