This paper reports the unique value of two different modes of scaffolds, faded instructor-based and peer-oriented attention guidance, in online learning conversations. Drawing upon the instructional effectiveness and challenges of scaffolding, we present the design of three versions of an anchored discussion system: two versions with different modes of scaffolds and one regular version as a control condition. A total of 150 students distributed in three sections of a management information systems course participated in this study. We randomly assigned each section to one of the three software designs. The results demonstrate that both types of scaffolds focused students' attention to important information from text, which catalyzed deeper processing of important information. Moreover, we found that peer scaffold function facilitated a positive upward trend for the negotiation of differences in perspectives. These results indicate that attention guidance can support students to use instructional materials more constructively in online learning conversations.

STEP-NC standard has the capability to transfer multiple information relates to machining process among CAD, CAPP, CAM and CNC. In this paper, a machining system which has closed-loop information transmission and self-learning feature is proposed. The architecture of the proposed system is structured utilizing IDEF0 functional modeling languages and the system numerical chain adopts ISO 14649 as the data exchange standard. The system includes following functions: part design, offline process planning, online process planning, part machining, condition monitoring, part measurement, information collection and information analysis. Geometrical data and technological data is transmitted from the upstream of the system to the downstream of the system. Meanwhile, process data which is gathered both during and after machining is sent back to the upstream, therefore the data flow is a closed-loop. All of the information is stored in a database for obtaining design and machining know-how so that the system is self-learning.

The paper describes the design and preliminary virtual testing of OSHap, an open-source low cost 2DOF haptic interface. The aim the research is to create a mechatronic platform for haptic interaction based mainly on cheap and open source components. The results will be distributed freely in order to provide guidelines for expert users to develop their own haptic interface. Both the mechanical design philosophy and the control electronics are hereby discussed together with a preliminary testing made by using virtual prototyping tools. The kinematic layout is based on a serial double joint scheme. This choice is claimed to be the less expensive one, inasmuch as tolerances do not have to be narrow as for the parallel systems. The system also allows future users to tune dimensions (and relative workspace) easily. The interface is admittance controlled for maximizing the transparency with low cost drives. The device is based on the Intel Galileo open-source development board: this board embeds a powerful chip-sets that enables us to perform real-time 2DOF control tasks that are hardly reachable with the most common open source electronic platforms. All the choices listed above are discussed and evaluated, with focus on performance-to-cost ratio.

We present iSyn, a WebGL-based tool for interactive de novo drug design. It features an evolutionary algorithm that automatically designs novel ligands with drug-like properties and synthetic feasibility using click chemistry. iSyn interfaces with our popular and fast molecular docking engine idock, remarkably reducing the evaluation and ranking time of drug candidates. Furthermore, inspired by our user friendly and high-performance WebGL visualizer iview, our iSyn also implements a tailor-made interactive visualizer to aid novel drug design. We believe iSyn can supplement the efforts of medicinal chemists in drug discovery research. To illustrate the utility of iSyn in generating novel ligands ex nihilo, we designed predicted inhibitors of two important drug targets, which are RNA editing ligase 1 (REL1) from T. brucei, the etiological agent of African sleeping sickness, and cyclin-dependent kinase 2 (CDK2), a positive regulator of eukaryotic cell cycle progression. Results show that iSyn managed to significantly enhance the predicted binding affinity of the best generated ligand by more than 3 orders of magnitude in potency. iSyn is written in C++, Python, HTML5 and JavaScript. It is free and open source, available at http://***/***. It has been tested successfully on both Linux and Windows.

In evolutionary robotics, which concerns automatic design of robotic systems using evolutionary algorithms, the well-known reality gap phenomenon occurs when transferring results from simulation to real world robots. Several approaches have been proposed to tackle this challenge, such as improving the simulator, avoiding poorly simulated solutions, or promoting robust controllers by introducing noise in the simulation. In this paper we investigate if the addition of a set of small obstacles in the simulated environment can help promote more robust gaits when transferred to a real world robot. In total 80 robot gaits are tested in the real world, evolved using flat and obstacle-seeded ground planes, and using two different scenario difficulties. The results show that in the baseline scenario the proposed obstacle method has little impact on the reality gap of the evolved gaits, whereas there is a significant reduction for the difficult scenario: The average real world performance ratio is 2.3 times higher than the result obtained with the flat plane, and there are no null-performing gaits.

Fast frequency sweep using Model Order Reduction (MORe) techniques is one of the most important features in modern FEM-based simulation software. In fact MORe techniques, and the Well-Conditioned Asymptotic Waveform Evaluation (WCAWE) technique in particular, reduce considerably the simulation time by providing accurate Sparameter approximations over wide frequency ranges with only one complete LU solution. However, many challenges related to the WCAWE automation remain. In this paper a new approach for the calculation of the reduced order model is presented. The new approach is based on the estimation of the speed up that can be provided by the WCAWE technique in comparison to the regular discrete sweep as a function of the reduced model size.

Silicon-Germanium is used as an alternative channel material for pFET in high-k metal gate-first technologies for 32 nm and beyond. However, gate-induced drain leakage (GIDL) is significant at nominal bias due to band-to-band tunneling (BTBT) at the gate-to-drain overlap surface and gate sidewall junctions. In this work, the results of numerical simulation are compared with experimental results for SiGe channel pFET and the calibrated models are used to describe the GIDL mechanisms in the dominant region for various drain and gate bias voltages. The simulation results correspond well with the experimental data, illustrating that the models presented in this paper can be used to describe the GIDL mechanisms and help to reduce the overall leakage budget for low-leakage, high-threshold voltage (HVT) device designs.

3D shape retrieval is a fundamental task in many domains such as multimedia, graphics, CAD, and amusement. In this paper, we propose a 3D object retrieval approach by effectively utilizing low-level patches with initial semantics of 3D shapes, which are similar as superpixels in images. These patches are first obtained by means of stably over-segmenting 3D shape, and we adopt five representative geometric features such as shape diameter function, average geodesic distance, and heat kernel signature, to characterize these low-level patches. A large number of patches collected from shapes in a dataset are encoded into visual words by virtue of sparse coding, and input query compares with 3D models in the dataset by probability distribution of visual words. Experiments show that the proposed method achieves comparable retrieval performance to state-of-the-art methods. © 2014 Springer international Publishing.

Voltage-controlled tricolor monolithic (single) solid state LED has been presented in this paper. This work will be used for light emissions of different colors controlled with the step changes of supplied potentials. The monolithic structure of Indium Gallium Nitride (InGaN)-based double Quantum Well (DQW) light-emitting diode (LED) has been designed and simulated with SILVACO Technology computer aided design (TCAD). Electron-hole recombination and illumination in each quantum well dominate at specific applied potentials. The spectral power distribution, electrons and holes concentrations in the active regions, energy band diagrams and power conversion efficiency for the solid-state lighting (SSL) structure are investigated. Effects of doping concentration in decoupling region, indium content in the InGaN alloy and active layers thicknesses, on the emission spectra are critical design parameters for optimum performance and desired control of the device. The simulated results indicate that an LED with an optimized structure can be produced from blue to cyan and then green light emissions with the tuning of supply voltage.

Much research into how people learn and skills required for professional competence has gone into designing curricula in higher education. Benjamin Bloom, Fink, Eric Mazur, Richard Felder and many others have much contributed to the design of aligned courses where outcomes, teaching and assessment complement each other resulting in effective learning. This is the basis of the international accreditation using outcome based education (OBE). Moreover, the Indian accreditation agency National Board of Accreditation (NBA) has adopted outcome based education for colleges seeking accreditation now. In this paper, we specifically describe the work in progress implementation of social constructive approaches such as eBridge and Talent Identification strategies in Nalla Malla Reddy Engineering College (NMREC) which is an affiliated engineering college of Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University (JNTU), Hyderabad, India. These strategies aim at fulfilling all the graduate attributes according to Washington Accord. In the present paper, we propose to show the processes, the data and some outcomes of these initiatives. The measured outcomes have demonstrated the positive influences of social constructivism in skill development and employability of the students.
