Computer Aided Control Engineering involves three parallel streams: Simulation and modelling, Control system design (off-line), and Controller implementation. In industry the bottleneck problem has always been modelling, and this remains the case - that is where control (and other) engineers put most of their technical effort. Although great advances in software tools have been made, the cost of modelling remains very high - too high for some sectors. Object-oriented modelling, enabling truly re-usable models, seems to be the key enabling technology here. Software tools to support control systems design have two aspects to them: aiding and managing the work-flow in particular projects (whether of a single engineer or of a team), and provision of numerical algorithms to support control-theoretic and systems-theoretic analysis and design. The numerical problems associated with linear systems have been largely overcome, so that most problems can be tackled routinely without difficulty - though problems remain with (some) systems of extremely large dimensions. Recent emphasis on control of hybrid and/or constrained systems is leading to the emerging importance of geometric algorithms (ellipsoidal approximation, polytope projection, etc). Constantly increasing computational power is leading to renewed interest in “design by optimisation”, an example of which is MPC. Innovations in commercial tools, however, emphasise project-management rather than systems-theoretic support. The explosion of “embedded” control systems has highlighted the importance of autocode generation, directly from modelling/simulation products to target processors. This is the ‘new kid on the block’, and again much of the focus of commercial tools is on this part of the control engineer's job. Here the control engineer can no longer ignore computer science (at least, for the time being).

Some advancements in information technology as application support for Internet browsers and modeling of interrelated objects are well appropriate to establish distance learning in advanced computer environment. One of the best developing areas in application of information technology is engineering. A great promise is integration of virtual environments in engineering and Internet based distance education. Methodology reported in (I. J. Rudas et al., 2000) and (L. Horvath et al., 2002) represents one of the possible directions of development towards this integration. Considering some basic concepts and methods from the proposals of the authors of these papers, this paper discusses problem and methodology, and details some practical issues for the implementation of the proposed method in the higher education practice. In this paper, cooperating managers and managing techniques are introduced for virtual classrooms. Next, selection or definition of a course and constraints in classroom models are discussed. Following this, structure and construction of classroom model are explained. Finally, integration of modeled classroom with engineering system is detailed as an implementation issue

This paper presents several aspects of developing an integrated Regional E-administration system, by adding "pieces" successively developed under the frame of two PHARE projects. These projects have a consistent technical background, result of the strong implication of the local academics. Due to this implication, a unitary approach ensures the continuity and the integration of the results of these projects into a coherent, useful system. The first project is an interactive map, based on JAVA technology. The other project has as a result a document-oriented, data collecting network, that ensures the link between the Timis County Council and the local administration and is based on Lotus technology. Several considerations about the management of the involvement of the Academic expertise in this domain are presented and conclusions are yielded.

A prototype relational database system was developed that has indexing capability, which threads into data acquisition and analysis programs used by a wide range of researchers. To streamline the user interface and table design, free-formatted table entries were used as descriptors for experiments. This approach potentially could increase data entry errors, compromising system index and retrieval capabilities. A methodology of integrating intelligent agents with the relational database was developed to cleanse and improve the data quality for search and retrieval. An intelligent agent was designed using JACK (TM) (Agent Oriented Software Group) and integrated with an Oracle-based relational database. The system was tested by triggering agent corrective measures and was found to improve the quality of the data entries. Wider testing protocols and metrics for assessing its performance are subjects for future studies. This methodology for designing intelligent-based database systems should be useful in developing robust large-scale database systems.

In a world where companies make massive investments in R&D, where projects are getting more and more complicated and are developed globally, the need for a robust Business Creation Process system is essential. Philips Semiconductor acknowledged this need. Since 2003, the company invested in developing a standard Business Creation Process that has been implemented globally. The new system, Business Creation and Management (BCaM) was developed especially for Philips Semiconductor but it is based on industrial standards and can be applied by any organization that recognize the importance of managing portfolios, resources and projects in an efficient and structural way. This paper will explain the background and the business case behind the idea of developing a Business Creation Process. It will give an overview of the overall architecture and the main components of the system. The paper will also describe the method of implementing the system globally and the issues behind driving such a cultural change within a big organization. © 2005 ieee.

Autonomic Computing has gained widespread attention over the last few years for its vision of developing applications with autonomic or self-managing behaviors [1]. New approaches to the design and implementation of autonomic systems have emerged, including the use of goal policies[2], utility functions [2], intelligent monitoring, data mining, reinforcement learning, and planning. Unfortunately, these new approaches do nothing to reduce administrators' skepticism towards automation-how is an administrator to believe that an autonomic system will help his systems perform better? In this report, we describe an approach by which an autonomic system can win the trust of its users, and can continuously adjust ilself to make better decisions based on the users' preferences.

The differing experiences and practices of systems professionals and users cause major obstacles in the process of requirements definition, For system design projects to be successful, users and systems professionals must learn from each other. Wenger (1998) believes alignment, imagination and engagement to be the core elements for learning in a community of practice. Boland and Tenkasi (1995) believe that perspective taking and perspective making are core elements in learning across communities. We explore the value of these elements as a model for evaluating how users and IT professionals came together to work on an ERP project. The non-profit organization we observed undertook an accelerated and iterative approach to the configuration process in order to surface relevant issues and expedite the project's delivery. Participants were organized into teams dedicated to developing individual modules for the system. The model we propose offers theoretical insight and support for the major problems identified by management as the organization began to test the initial configurations of the system. The case provides insights into how a high degree of active involvement in the configuration process by users, with the assistance of knowledgeable and experienced consultants, can help bridge the boundaries of knowledge across these two communities of practice. Yet, the accelerated schedule limits their ability to leverage their future system, Furthermore, the current project structure created limitations in the team's ability to fully integrate the system modules. This research offers a new lens through which to examine systems design processes. For both practitioners and researchers, it provides insights into the importance of balancing the tensions in a design project.
