Rapid advances in the real-time embedded operating systems necessitate the development of Internet oriented application specific embedded operating systems. The ASOS (application specific embedded operating systems) has now become a promising research direction of the embedded operating system. The paper clarifies the concept of the ASOS, and takes the embedded operating system applied in the traffic signal controller we are now developing to illustrate the main characteristics of the ASOS. Benefits from the CBSE (component-based software engineering) include system quality improvement, shorter time to market, integration of complex systems, etc. However, as for the embedded system, the component-based technology and theories still in an exploration period, though many projects are carried on. In this paper, we present the process of our approach to construct the ASOS based on the component technology.

Agents are an emerging technology that grants programmers a new way to exploit distributed resources. One of the hardest difficult in the development of this kind of application is the managing of agent interactions, since agents must interact in a collaborative and/or competitive way to achieve their task. Roles are a powerful paradigm that can be used to model agent interactions, both between two (or more) agents and between an agent and the platform/node on which it is running. In this paper we propose a guideline to role developing and use, with regard to the agent technology. In particular we focus on the main problems that a role system and a role developer must take into account.

Our work with the AAANTS (adaptive, autonomous, agent colony interactions with network transparent services) project attributes to developing methodologies for demonstrating collective intelligent behaviour in agent-based synthetic ecosystems. The model gains wisdom from a very successful community life style found in the animal kingdom - the Ants. The proposed model is a multiagent system that conceptualises and implements a colony of agents that actively interact with a collection of distributed services in order to provide adaptive behaviour. We have implemented the AAANTS model on an intelligent environment related project and built a prototype for an intelligent room that actively adapts the environmental conditions based on user behavioural patterns. We discuss the knowledge representation based on "Frames" that harmonise with continuous adaptation based on reinforcement learning techniques.

The web-based application system is being widely used in managing organisation. This research paper reports on how web-based technology is used in developing an academic time management system. This prototype system, which is currently used in the School of Information Technology of Universiti Utara Malaysia, has showed significant improvement in time management. Through this web-based application, users could manage their time for traditional meetings, student consultations and lectures. Furthermore, this application would enable users to discuss things collaboratively, design projects and conduct meetings through the virtual environment. This research also discovered some constraints and limitations of the system. Finally, an avenue for further research is also identified.
