Transport Canada (TC) and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) have been active players in the research and development of trace explosive detection systems (TEDS). Under the direction of TC, private industry has been asked to develop devices meeting more and more stringent criteria. The recent development of a specification for TEDS by TC will provide industry with a clear blueprint for developing devices which will serve the traveling public today and into the foreseeable future. One of the ongoing projects involves the use of laser-based explosives detection. This technique involves the use of laser-generated infrared radiation to scan the surface of objects. The interaction of the laser radiation with any residual explosive on the surface of the object will initiate `micro' bursts. The resulting light generated by these bursts can be detected and is characteristic of the explosive involved. Temporal and spectral analyses of the emitted light reveal unique signal patterns that are used to differentiate the `micro' bursts. The results are preliminary, however, the technique offers the potential for detecting explosives on objects in near-real time. Thus, the technique could be used to scan carry-on baggage as the individual pieces of luggage travel on the x-ray system's conveyer belt.

The natural immune system is a subject of great research interest because it provides powerful and flexible information processing capabilities as a complex adaptive system. This paper describes our extensible framework, named iNet, for building artificial immune systems, particularly artificial immune networks, which has been used in several of our projects developing biologically-inspired intelligent applications. We describe the iNet architecture, its design principles and features, highlighting its versatility and component reusability. We also describe an autonomous decentralized network application built with iNet as a sample use case for showing how to use it.

This paper summarizes a project that seeks to extend previous work in formal methods, functional languages, adaptive control and hybrid control to establish a methodology and a framework for validation and verification of adaptive/intelligent software systems. We are working to apply recent results in creating logical abstractions in Haskell to build a capability for automatic verification of new or modified components which meet the constraints imposed on the resulting system. As components become ready for use, we intend to apply the specification for the Open Control Platform, currently under development as part of the US Defense Advanced Research projects Agency (DARPA) Software-Enabled Control project, as the definition of our distributed control platform. Our approach emphasizes the use of off-line verification and validation techniques to establish ranges of parameter variations to be allowed by the adaptive/intelligent control software and online techniques to ensure that approved constraints are being met. We are in the process of developing an engineering plan to demonstrate use of the binary decision diagram (BDD) and Stanford Validity Checker (SVC) extensions to Haskell to automatically validate an adaptive, online control law redesign and implementation to meet performance specifications. This implementation will be designed to demonstrate an initial capability that can be extended to other adaptive and intelligent control systems safety critical tasks.

Early CAI efforts focused on the transmission or delivery of knowledge to the student. Subsequent work in intelligent tutoring systems took a more cognitive approach and attempted to emulate the behavior of skilled human tutors via software. More recent work has focused on collaborative learning processes, and the idea of a collaboratory as a virtual space for work. This paper describes a design process to support the development and use of collaborative learning technologies. This process, the Learning Collaboratory Design Framework (LuCiDiFy), integrates methods and concepts from cognitive systems engineering, theories of learning and instruction, distributed computing and computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL). LuCiDiFy is instantiated in an actual software testbed, the Collaborative Learning Environment for Operational systems (CLEOS). CLEOS is a collaboratory for teachers, students and practitioners in the physical sciences, and in particular for NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction experiments. CLEOS includes two virtual instrument tutorials, CVS (Collaborative Virtual Spectrometer) and VXRD (Virtual X-Ray Diffractometer); an asynchronous messaging system, the Question Board (QB); a project-based design environment, TOSP (Tool for Organizing and Supervising projects); and an architecture for developing collaborative apprenticeship learning systems, CALOT (Collaborative Apprenticeship Learning Object Toolkit); an authoring environment, BAUEN (Basic AUthoring ENvironment); and a collaborative multi-user domain (MUD) infrastructure, MudSpot.

More and more organizations are realizing the tremendous cost involved in the maintenance of increasingly complex equipment. developing diagnostic solutions in-house is highly challenging and very expensive task and the only way to support the development is to re-use tools in many different projects. In recent years, COTS solutions have appeared and proved their mettle in actual use. Serviceability of equipment is crucial to the performance and readiness of the whole organization, which means that downtime must be minimal at all times. In order to shorten the equipment downtime, two conditions most be met. First, the system under test most be testable enough to give the service technicians all the information needed to quickly and accurately diagnose faults, or to determine that the equipment is fully operational by passing all acceptance tests. All of these test activities must be available for easy access, operation and interpretation, often under difficult field conditions and time pressures. Second, the service technician must have enough experience and knowledge to use the information supplied by the different test tools, whether BIT, external test equipment or manual, so that diagnosis is reached efficiently and effectively. Both conditions must be met to provide a good solution for today's service problems. In this paper, we describe the implementation of an innovative test solution mounted on the vehicle itself. The solution is based on a COTS test and diagnostics tool that supplies guidance, recommendation and intelligent on-line documentation.

Mobility will be one key issue for future broadband access. Consequently, many research projects are currently focusing on wireless ATM networks. Within the European ACTS research program the "Magic WAND" project is developing mobile terminals and access points based on wireless ATM technology. The terminals will communicate at a speed up to 20 Mbit/s in the 5 GHz band within multiple picocells of approximately 50 meters in diameter. This technology supports applications and services demanding both high bandwidth and mobile network access, two contradicting requirements in the past. We take a look at typical multimedia applications and evaluate the key components of the WAND system necessary to support their quality of service (QoS) requirements. One major challenge is to guarantee QoS transparently over the wireless link. We present our solutions for a QoS-supported mobile audio/videoconferencing subsystem and analyse how video compression algorithms behave under the conditions of a wireless medium.

Empirical studies have pointed to the need for coupling the introduction of new technology to organizational development and corporate strategy. We propose an organizational learning approach and present a four-perspective model which accepts the multidimensional nature of learning in organizations. This will allow for a comprehensive discussion, supported by case studies, of how to identify core competences in an industrial enterprise, how to analyze the present situation as a basis for suggesting combined means for further developing core competences. The paper concludes with a series of statements which outline implications which may be drawn from the application of the four-perspective model of learning. © 1995 ieee.
