This paper describes the design and implementation of CMS, an intelligent knowledge-based tool to help organization members execute organizational procedures. CMS is aimed at automating the relationships and roles of organization members, rather than just transactions, so that a procedure can be executed by groups of problem solvers acting autonomously, cooperatively and collaboratively to achieve the collective goal. This collaborative process model supports the definition, execution, monitoring, and dynamic modification of organizational procedures, and is implemented as an object oriented knowledge-based system. The author's primary intent in this paper is to document the implementation strategy he employed, which is based on the integration of object-oriented programming within the logic programming environment of Prolog. This integration proved to be a powerful application development environment preserving the best features of both technologies.< >

A relatively simple yet powerful way to represent temporal constraints is as suitability functions, which identify intervals during which a constraint allows or precludes a given activity. The authors describe the successful application of this framework to Transformation, an expert system for planning Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations. TRANS is charged with many tasks requiring constraint checking, including ordering observations, grouping those performed together and determining timing links between them. These tasks have been successfully performed using the Micro-Spike package, which supports the generation, propagation and path consistency of temporal constraints.< >

An artificial neural network is built and trained to model the local bending reflex of the leech Hirudo Medicinalis. The model is validated by the data provided from physiological experiments. The training data and topology of the neural network is based on data gathered from physiological experiments. A graphical representation of the leech is constructed as a high level interface to the artificial neural network. This interface is used to determine the appropriateness of responses to different stimulus patterns. The artificial neural network is tested to see if it can generalize its repertoire of behaviors to untrained stimulus patterns. The leech provides the authors with a simple neurostructure that can be understood with today's technologies.< >

The progress is reported of a research project designed to explore an answer to the question 'Can knowledge-based systems (KBS) assist in product advertising decisions?' For this study a user-developed KBS prototype, the Product Position Strategy Advisor, was developed to advise market planners about the optimum advertising for a product. The recommendation is based on two major factors: the purchase behavior of the target market and the product's points of differences (i.e. the consumers' perceptions of the product's and the company's strengths and weaknesses). The prototype, which is still evolving, is described. It is limited to positioning consumer products which are new to the firm and sold primarily in supermarkets.< >

This paper describes the design framework and some development issues of the project, LISA (learning IS active), which uses a network of computers to teach freshmen for the course 'Introduction to Computer Science'. The research is inter-disciplinary in nature, comprising computing, multimedia, artificial intelligence, cognitive science, computer network, etc. For example, different medium information provides multiple learning cues for the students while techniques of artificial intelligence allow the system to better adapt to individual student's needs. A novel element of this research is to engender student's initiatives or motives to learn by engaging the student in a learning environment with rich social context. Some pilot studies of the project have been conducted.< >

Given data in the form of a collection of (x,y) pairs of real numbers, the symbolic function identification problem is to find a functional model of the form y=f(x) that fits the data. This paper describes an adaptive system for solution of symbolic function identification problems that combines a genetic algorithm and the Levenberg-Marquardt nonlinear regression algorithm. The genetic algorithm uses an expression-tree representation rather than the more usual binary-string representation. Experiments were run with data generated using a wide variety of function models. The system was able to find a function model that closely approximated the data with a very high success rate.< >

In vehicle routing problems with time windows (VRPTW), a set of vehicles with limited capacity and travel time, are to routed from a central depot to a set of geographically dispersed customers with known demands within specified time windows. The VRSPTW is an NP-hard problem. That is, the time taken to solve it optimally increases exponentially with respect to the size of the problem. Genetic sectoring is a partitioning method that uses a genetic algorithm to find feasible solutions for the VRPTW. The genetic sectoring method was tested on a standard set of VRPTW problems. The solutions obtained using genetic sectoring gave better solutions than known conventional methods. The authors carry out a statistical analysis of the solutions obtained using genetic sectoring, to ascertain the kind of problems in which it would be advantageous to use the genetic sectoring method.< >

The Interactive Experimenter Planning system (IEPS) Group at AlliedSignal Technical Services Corp. has been developing expert systems for NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) since 1985. Several systems have been developed in the C language on IBM PCs and UNIX-based workstations. With the implementation of these systems, various generic, C-based tools for building new applications have been developed. These generic, C-based tools have now been organized into a toolkit called the IEPS Software Toolkit. The focus of this paper is on the IEPS Software Toolkit and its use. The categories of tools in the toolkit that are described include: data formatting and report generation tools, user interface tools, database tools, strategic planning tools and tactical planning tools.< >

With the globalisation of business, the implementation of turnkey projects is becoming increasingly complex. Inputs from different and diverse sources, coordination and synchronizing of delivery schedules, and cost-reduction targets call for powerful, effective and intelligent tools. Without such tools, an unexpected situation can put the project manager under stress which can consequently lead to wrong decisions. Therefore, there is a necessity today for online systems that can diagnose the causes of problems, help the project management to arrive at quick and proper decisions as well as identify ways to take corrective actions. The important parameters for online implementation of such a diagnostic system are the accuracy and speed of the diagnosis. The concepts used to realise these parameters have a strong influence on the selection of the most suitable tool for a given application. Current concepts such as establish-refine and hypothesis-test are explained. Furthermore, the representation of the knowledge in data files along with an appropriate illustration are also presented.< >

The authors discuss the representational requirements for capturing and processing the conceptual knowledge about software descriptions. Software repositories should not only provide the service of managing evolving objects and software-related descriptions in integrated environments. This requires addressing the representational adequacy and semantics of present object management systems. Based on experiences gained in a series of computer-aided software engineering (CASE) integration projects, they point out abstractional, assertional, and dynamic clustering requirements of data modeling language for repository managers. A simple example illustrates how the deductive object management system ConceptBase, embodying Telos as its data model, meets these requirements.< >
