This paper is concerned with the design of a system capable of handling ad hoc user responses to system initiated questions. To this end we have developed an approach called the expectation-driven response understandi...

ReDS, a distributed intelligent manufacturing scheduling system, was initially designed as a requirement-driven scheduling system and has evolved into a real-time distributed scheduling system. It is currently running at several VLSI manufacturing sites. The authors trace its development history and analyze the present system architecture for future system development. This report paper provides: (1) the development history of ReDS, (2) the distributed intelligentsystem approach of ReDS, and (3) the future research for the next generation of ReDS.< >

An integrated system design is proposed and defined for the intelligent network. It is based on the integration of the Signaling system Number 7 (SS7) network with the conventional SCPs (service control points). This results in more effective introduction of new services. A call processing model that allows multiple application services to provide real-time behavior is proposed. An application of this model of call processing to the Private Virtual Network (PVN) application services is given.< >

An approach to intelligent monitoring called AIM and its experimental model are presented. This approach constitutes a departure from conventional methodologies. The capabilities of the approach are described, and an application of AIM involving the monitoring of a file access is discussed. The development of this approach still remains in its early stages. Although a more detailed implementation based on the initially constructed model is under development, the major efforts are being shifted to represent the temporal behavior of a monitored system through the framework of dynamically constructing representational models.< >

A case study is presented of a successful intelligentsystem. CANASTA (the Crash Analysis Troubleshooting Assistant) is a knowledge-based system designed to assist support engineers in isolating the underlying causes of operating system crashes, whether due to hardware faults or system software bugs. CANASTA's success is largely due to a combination of project management actions and the innovative technical design and development of the system. The lessons learned from developing a large hybrid system such as CANASTA are presented.< >

ASSESS was developed to evaluate and select the best application that requires an expert system component. ASSESS, an expert system itself, works on many levels (company, department, and application), each across many disciplines (business, organizational, and technical). intelligently querying a user during a consultation allows many alternative potential application choices to be compared. The results are quantified, and the final recommendations are presented and interpreted along with their justifications. ASSESS provides the application selection expertise required for a systematic and consistent application assessment study.< >

Expert systems (ESs) have associated risks that managers need to know as they consider new projects. The research reported is aimed at establishing a quantitative approach to assisting managers in identifying these risks. Results of empirical studies and new automated tools are discussed. The risks included: developing an application that fails to represent the expert's knowledge; failure to produce a usable system; upsetting people and groups within the organization who may feel threatened by the planned ES application; and exposing themselves or the organization to legal liability claims resulting from a malfunction of an ES application.< >
