The author explores a general framework for analyzing or synthesizing intelligentsystems, as well as techniques for implementing them. The framework consists of six factors: purpose, space, structure, time, process and efficiency. The technologies involve the methods of artificial intelligence and strategies for developing knowledge-based systems. The framework has been used to develop diverse applications, ranging from an expert system for creative product design to a package for factory configurations. This framework is discussed in the context of an expert system for the design of personal computers.< >

State-of-the-art research and implementation efforts being conducted in the area of expert database systems with the goal of developingintelligent and effective applications is examined. Various approaches taken to integrate expert systems and database systems are discussed. Next, a real-world application developed by the author using one of the outlined techniques is discussed in detail. This application consists in the implementation of a comprehensive computerized system to automate the educational activities of the American Red Cross. The insights gleaned from this effort are presented. The most important lesson learned was to stop thinking about rules in abstract terms and visualize them instead, as any other valid entity (or object) as a part of the overall data model.< >

An expert system development model is outlined that offers an approach to expert system project management and development similar to traditional software project management and development. The goal was to offer a bridge for expert system development from a research philosophy to a way of doing business. The model offers users, developers, and managers a guide to developing and managing expert systemprojects. The purpose, scope, and benefits of the model are discussed.

A set of ongoing research activities at the Decision system Laboratory (DSL) at Stanford University is briefly described. These activities attempt to address the global issue of strategic integration from the technical point of view of developingintelligent decision support systems (IDSS) which support the management process in strategic integration. The approach is to break the global issue into three basic subissues and organize research projects to focus on the development of subsystems for these subissues with the view that total integration will proceed in stages. The three subissues are: who are you? where do you play? how do you play?
