Internet of Things has emerged as a key technological enabler for broader socio-technical and socio-economic paradigms, such as smart cities and Circular Economy. However, IoT systems are characterised by constraints and limitations which in order to be overcome they need to be deployed in conjunction and in synergy with other emerging ICT. distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) can help overcome challenges pertaining to data immutability, timeliness and security. However, the use of DLT does not satisfactorily mitigate security risks and vulnerabilities per se and currently cybersecurity aspects of IoT systems are addressed in a fragmented way. Furthermore, the conflict between the resource demanding Blockchains and the highly constrained nature of IoT devices hinders implementation efforts of corresponding systems. We consider networked systems that comprise both IoT and DLT technologies via the prism of Intelligent Transportation systems (ITS). We elicit a three-tier threat model identifying attack vectors at the Device, the Network and the DLT layers. The identified attacks are then ranked by using the DREAD ranking scheme. The use of the threat model is demonstrated on a novel proof-of-concept IoT networked system implemented using the IOTA Tangle distributed ledger, where it helps to critically appraise the design of the system against the most critical attacks. Furthermore, the developed system is among the first in the literature to demonstrate the synergy of IoT and DLT on actual constrained embedded devices. The performance evaluation provides insights showing that such systems can be efficient and suitable for real-life deployment.

Research shows that consumers want to know their appliances' energy consumption. Also, providing consumers with more information about their energy use and giving them more control over it can lead to choices that reduce energy consumption. This research proposes a sensor network of Smart Electricity Meters (SEMs) that system uses a Data Distribution Service (DDS) publish/subscribe middleware (DPSM) for real-time fine-grain sensing of electric loads. The SEMs are connected to household appliances to measure their power consumption and send it to a server for storage and data analysis. Our results indicate an average throughput of 302 bytes/second and an average latency of 25.44 ms. The proposed solution demonstrates promise for real-time monitoring of household appliances' power consumption in Smart Grid (SG) environments.

Storage is one of the important components in datacenters. As the data volume rises and the service scale grows, some workloads like database demand increasing amount of storage. While a single server can only host a limited number of disks, distributed file systems (e.g., Hadoop distributed File System referred to as HDFS) enable accessing disks mounted on the other servers in the cluster, satisfying the storage requirements. On the other side, NVMe-over-Fabric protocols (e.g., NVMe-over-TCP) have been released as a solution on the device level to provide access to remote NVMe disks. Therefore, for those applications developed on top of HDFS, there are at least two choices to make use of the storage resources distributed in datacenters. A concern is whether NVMe-over-TCP will hurt the performance. The evaluation in this paper reveals that the performance degradation NVMe-over-TCP caused on HDFS-based workloads is limited, suggesting NVMe-over-TCP a performant and economical solution in datacenter design to support workloads that needs a lot of storage (such as database applications).
Due to the enormous benefits and applications of cloud computing, there is a lot of interest from researchers on cloud computing. The most significant security risk associated with cloud computing is insider distribut...
