The advent of the Internet-of-Things (IoT) presents a solution to improving agricultural crop production, to achieve food security and meet the sustainable development goal to eliminate hunger. A literature review indicates that an energy efficient wireless sensor network (WSN) is a good solution for remote crop monitoring. One way of creating an energy efficient WSN is to ensure that the nodes themselves are energy efficient. This paper presents a preliminary analysis of an energy efficient sensor node, a key component in an IoT-based wireless sensor network solution for crop monitoring. A review of recent literature articles is used to analyze the energy usage of each of the components and the energy contribution of a solar harvesting sub-system. Our analysis, in a generic model that can be used to effectively design an energy efficient wireless sensor node.

Smart transducers and network infrastructures are pillars of the IoT. Transducers play a fundamental role in providing measurements to monitoring and control chains in industry. Industry 4.0 specifications require that measurement information be always available for the application layer whatever be the source and the physical channel. ieee 1451 is a family of standards edited with the aim of introducing the plug and play approach in the field of distributed measurement systems and wireless sensor networks. At first, a brief summary of the ieee 1451 introduces fundamental concepts like Transducer Interface Data Sheet (TEDS), Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP) and Transducer Interface Module (TIM). Then, a sight to the ieee 21451.001 allows a novel approach to edge computing to be described. Underwater Optical Wireless sensor Network (UOWSN) is a promising technology as it can achieve high-speed communication in underwater environment. However, affected by the uncertainty of complex underwater environment, the network topology of UOWSN is highly dynamic, making it difficult to quantify flexibility or further optimize the topological structure. In this paper, we propose a flexibility-based network topology evaluation model (FEM) for UOWSNs. Then, a reinforcement learning model, termed FEM-DRL, for optimizing the network topology based on FEM is developed, which enables UOWSN to maintain an optimal topology when working in harsh underwater environments. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed method can significantly improve the network flexibility and reduces the time cost for constructing network topology by 41.8% compared with baseline algorithms. Test-bed experiments verify the applicability and effectiveness in practical applications for detecting emergent events.

General Matrix Multiplication (GEMM) has a wide range of applications in scientific simulation and artificial intelligence. Although traditional libraries can achieve high performance on large regular-shaped GEMMs, they often behave not well on irregular-shaped GEMMs, which are often found in new algorithms and applications of high-performance computing (HPC). Due to energy efficiency constraints, low-power multicore digital signal processors (DSPs) have become an alternative architecture in HPC systems. Targeting multi-core DSPs in FT-m7032, a prototype CPU-DSPs heterogeneous processor for HPC, an efficient implementation - ftIMM - for three types of irregular-shaped GEMMs is proposed. FtIMM supports automatic generation of assembly micro-kernels, two parallelization strategies, and auto-tuning of block sizes and parallelization strategies. The experiments show that ftIMM can get better performance than the traditional GEMM implementations on multi-core DSPs in FT-m7032, yielding on up to 7.2x performance improvement, when performing on irregular-shaped GEMMs. And ftIMM on multi-core DSPs can also far outperform the open source library on multi-core CPUs in FT-m7032, delivering up to 3.1x higher efficiency.

This paper proposes CSS, a built-in channel state scrambling scheme to provide always-on protection for channel state information. CSS uses randomly generated scrambling vectors to emulate human activities, preventing eavesdroppers from recovering human physical activity from the channel state. By carefully designing the scrambling scheme based on physical channel models, we ensure that legacy receivers can successfully decode the frames and all frames transmitted over the air are scrambled. Furthermore, legitimate Wi-Fi sensors can still recover the true activity with a pre-shared secret key. Implementation on a real communication system shows that CSS can retain the same frame-error rate for commercial wireless receivers while misleading eavesdroppers with a success rate of over 95%.
