While there is not much discussion on the importance of formally describing and analyzing quantitative requirements in the process of software construction;in the paradigm of API-based software systems, it could be vital. Quantitative attributes can be thought of as attributes determining the Quality of Service - QoS provided by a software component published as a service. In this sense, they play a determinant role in classifying software artifacts according to specific needs stated as requirements. In this work, we present a research program consisting of the development of formal languages and tools to characterize and analyze the Quality of Service attributes of software components in the context of distributed systems. More specifically, our main motivational scenario lays on the execution of a service-oriented architecture.

The development of wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems enables a highly robust and convenient means for quantifying gait. In particular, the quantification hemiplegic gait can objectively identify disparity, such as with respect to reduced arm swing. Recent developments have produced the BioStamp nPoint, which is a conformal wearable and wireless inertial sensor system. The BioStamp nPoint is conveniently mounted by adhesive to an aspect of the human anatomy, such as the dorsum of the hand, for quantifying reduced arm swing for hemiplegic gait. The acquired inertial sensor data quantifying the characteristics of reduced arm swing for hemiplegic gait is wirelessly transmitted to a secure Cloud computing environment for subsequent post-processing. The pertinent gyroscope signal data is consolidated into a feature set suitable for machine learning classification. Using a multilayer perceptron neural network considerable classification accuracy is attained to distinguish between a hemiplegic affected arm with reduced arm swing and the unaffected arm. These accomplishments imply a pathway for ameliorating reduced arm swing through the application of conformal wearable and wireless inertial sensor systems, such as the BioStamp nPoint.

Wireless sensor Networks (WSNs) are composed of distributed small sensors that are deployed in various environmental conditions to collect data such as temperature, moisture, light speed, etc. These sensors are subjected to various damages, noises and low battery life as a result of which sensors account for abnormal data readings. These anomalies must be detected for the reliable and efficient working of a WSN. This study presents a comparative study for fault detection using Twin Support Vector Machines (TSVM) by utilizing different kernel functions. TSVM uses two non-parallel hyperplanes to classify data and is insensitive to class size imbalance. The choice of kernels significantly influences the performance of TSVM. The proposed work is estimated using different standard WSN datasets by inserting various types of fault. This paper examines fundamental trade-offs in fault-tolerant distributed systems and replicated databases built over the Internet. We discuss interplays between consistency, availability, and latency which are in the very nature of globally distributed computer systems and also analyse their interconnection with durability and energy efficiency. In this paper we put forward an idea that consistency, availability, latency, durability and other properties need to be viewed as more continuous than binary in contrast to the well-known CAP/PACELC theorems. We compare different consistency models and highlight the role of the application timeout, replication factor and other settings that essentially determine the interplay between above properties. Our findings may be of interest to software engineers and system architects who develop Internet-scale distributed computer systems and cloud solutions.

The river’s current water pollution monitoring still relies on outdated techniques such as continuous and manual monitoring. This condition makes it impossible to pinpoint the precise position of the pollutant and collect data remotely and in real-time. As a result, in this paper, an automated water quality monitoring system is designed and implemented on the ARM Mbed platform, FRDM KL25Z, incorporating multiple sensors and a GPS module to track the position of pollutants. pH, turbidity, and temperature sensors were among the water pollution sensors employed. The system’s overall design includes remote sensing and monitoring components, with both systems communicating through WiFi. The data that has been logged can be monitored on the ThingSpeak server. In addition, when pollution in the river happens, the location is recorded. Experiments were carried out on several types of water, including mineral water, water, reverse osmosis water, tap water, and river water, to evaluate the proposed system’s performance.

The Internet of Things (IoT) concept enables the connectivity and sending and receiving of data across millions of intelligent objects. This paradigm continues to evolve and increase tremendously, just as the dangers and assaults on IoT infrastructures do. Wireless sensor networks are viewed as excellent prospects for a variety of applications, including industrial monitoring, data gathering in hazardous settings, and military operations. The technology of Blockchain has emerged in recent years as among the most revolutionary technologies. This technology was developed to facilitate digital transactions and to enable safe and trustworthy access to the distributed ledger. Blockchain technology combined with smart contracts enables users to conduct safe transactions without trusting external parties or intermediaries. Attacks and dangers are increased in centralized IoT systems, particularly when data is transferred and shared with other companies between devices. To avoid such circumstances, this study proposes a decentralized approach that ensures an IoT system's autonomy and security. This paper addresses the recent approaches that are based on blockchain, we will review the present models and discuss their advantages and drawbacks to find out the solutions and the way to other studies. © 2021 ieee.

Data pre-processing is a fundamental component in any data-driven application. With the increasing complexity of data processing operations and volume of data, Cylon, a distributed dataframe system, is developed to facilitate data processing both as a standalone application and as a library, especially for Python applications. While Cylon shows promising performance results, we experienced difficulties trying to integrate with frameworks incompatible with the traditional Message Passing Interface (MPI). While MPI implementations encompass scalable and efficient c ommunication routines, their process launching mechanisms work well with mainstream HPC systems but are incompatible with some environments that adopt their own resource management systems. In this work, we alleviated this issue by directly integrating the Unified Communication X (UCX) framework, which supports a variety of classic HPC and non-HPC process-bootstrapping mechanisms as our communication framework. While we experimented with our methodology on Cylon, the same technique can be used to bring MPI communication to other applications that do not employ MPI’s built-in process management approach.

The Zero-Power Signal Conditioning IP (ZeSCIP) aims to operate in an autonomous environmental sensor node with energy harvester-extended life time. In this application, the sensor analog frontend has to process environmental signals of different nature, while it is confronted with power and space limitations and low operating voltages. In a flexible modular setup, the ZeSCIP analog frontend is attached to commercial sensors, which represent a specific air quality sensing scenario. This multi-sensor module is stacked to an ARM Cortex M4-based STM32 Nucleo™ board, creating an operational test setup of a modular sensor node, controlled via USB link. In measurement, the module consumes only 35.5\ μ W during processing of light, CO gas and temperature sensor signals, which makes it suitable to be autonomously powered by energy harvesters. © 2020 ieee.

The field of swarm robotics has continued to grow in recent years, branching into new fields that require more complex algorithms to solve and faster response times to control. Fields such as cloud and fog computing have been used to counter this first issue, allowing agents to use a network to access systems with much higher computational abilities, but this comes at the cost of increased latency. New architectures such as the Lambda and Kappa architectures have been developed to remedy this issue, allowing for cloud computers to be used while not sacrificing response times. This paper focuses on comparing three different architectures to assess their performance on a simulated robotic swam to solve the mobile sensor optimization problem. These three architectures are a traditional robot, the Lambda architecture, and the Kappa architecture. These systems are compared based off their latency and the runtimes of different algorithms in each implementation.
